CNN) -- A newborn baby boy who was tossed from a moving vehicle Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is in remarkably good shape, authorities say.

First hospitalized in critical condition, the Broward Sheriff's Office said the baby is continuing to improve and was in serious condition late Thursday.

A woman who brought the baby to police told the Broward Sheriff's Office that she was driving about 2:30 p.m. in a residential area in northern Fort Lauderdale when she saw a man and a woman who appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s arguing in a car. The car slowed to about 5 miles an hour and a bundle flew out of the window and landed about three feet away on grass by the road, she said.

She saw movement and stopped, expecting to find puppies or kittens. Instead, she found a tiny baby boy.

"The baby had a plastic bag over its head," said Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne, "a plastic bag like from a food store ... wrapped around the head of the baby." He said the umbilical cord was still attached.

The baby was flown via helicopter to Broward Medical Center in critical condition but "was later upgraded to serious and continues to improve" in the hospital's neonatal care unit, according to a statement from the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Police spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick said the newborn baby boy weighs 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

"We are asking the mother to come in and talk with us. ... We'd like to have a thorough discussion with the mother and father," Jenne said.

Authorities have released a description of the couple in the car and are asking for the public's help in finding them.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office: "Just prior to the newborn being tossed out of the car, the female witness observed the black male driver with an Afro hairstyle and white female passenger with braids arguing." They were in an older model white car, perhaps a Ford Crown Victoria.

While lamenting that a parent would do such a thing to an infant, Jenne said, "The good news is that we have a human being ... someone in this community who has the heart and soul to pick up a baby and save it."

Someone needs to develop some kind of one-shot sterilization that can be reversed later in life with success, and they should use it on people like this until they can prove they are capable of raising a child.

Some people throw babies out car windows. Some try and cut open a pregnant woman to steal a baby.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. Feb 11, 2005 — A man used e-mail to try to set up a mass suicide on Valentine's Day involving as many as 32 people across the nation and Canada, authorities said.

Gerald Krien, 26, was arrested Wednesday and faces charges of solicitation to commit murder, according to Klamath County sheriff's deputies.

The alleged pact was to take place Feb. 14 at Krien's home, and one mother even agreed to murder her two children, sheriff's Lt. Rod Dailey said.

Regarding the Baby in Florida:

The baby was NOT thrown out of the car window.

The woman who came in and turned in the baby, "the good samaritan", was actually the mother. She made up the story so she could feel like it was an anonymous thing or whatever.

at any rate, so that is good news that the baby was not cast off like trash, and obviously child services/whatever agency can take care of it.

breaking news on all the cable channels, etc. Ft. Lauderdale Sherriff is holding a press conference.

Nope, the majority of parents get upset about things like condoms being handed out in school, they think it 'promotes' high school children having sex.

Of course, any smart teenager knows planned parenthood hands condoms out for free.

Shit, I had to go through the intense embarrasment of going to the pharmacy to get mine the first time. It was awesome that the pharmacist, who went to high school with my mom and dad, rang up my order and gave me the "hairy eyeball" as I left.

There's a reason why it was embarrassing. Because you shouldn't be thinking you might be pregnant at 16 or 14.

The reason people harp over and over about staying away from sex for as long as possible is because, "grown ups", realize that you are too young. That you lose the chance to live life and explore and mature before having children. They realize that while preaching abstinence, using condoms, "the pill", that they are all fallible.

A mother gives away her baby and you hold that up as a reason for adults not to try and spare their children from having sex at an early age? Is abstinence reasonable? Hell no. But, is it something you should try so maybe your child will hold out as long as possible? Damn straight.

Sometimes, the amount of thought many of you put into the stances you take, scares the hell out of me.

Yet 200+ years ago, when life expectancy was far less, even in your precious whitebread culture, girls were married off at age 12. Perhaps in 1,000 years, when life expectany may be 250 years, no one should have sex until they are 50 - and if they do, they should be ashamed.
