I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

Doubt it, huge Jim Carrey and Bill Muray fan.
There are few movies that either have put out that I haven't liked.

You've never given me any reason to give you much more credit than that, I'm afraid. Your taste in movies, such as it is, seems (based on your own commentary on this board) to be limited to boobs, weapons and explosions (small, shiny objects probably rank fairly highly as well). As a result, you seem to forego anything which requires much thought. Beyond movies, your views of the world seem to be equally hampered by the same primitive limitations.

Try these then.
The Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Red Dragon (granted, the last two are not as good as the first one, but I digress)
Lolita
Clear and Present Danger
Patriot Games
The Hunt for Red October (Tom Clancy > most else)
A Thin Red Line
Catch Me if you Can
For the most part, all of them are relatively good movies with few 'explosions or shiny objects' (disregarding the movie adaptations of the Tom Clancy films, given the subject matter) and with the exception of Lolita, they are also lacking a bit in the boobies department (and the boobies in that were bloody well creepy, I may add).
Sorry X. You've never given yourself time to get to know me long enough or well enough to be able to make more than a cursory judge of character about me and I am very, very happy to say that I assume everyone that posts to a message board or plays a game isn't doing so in a manner that accurately portrays how they act in every situation in their lives away from the keyboard.
Previous posts have asked what people enjoy from a movie. I do enjoy boobs (Striptease), guns (Die Hard/Lethal Weapon), explosions (xXx), and the occasional shiny metal object (Lord of the Rings). I also enjoy movies that give in to deep philosophical thought (Matrix 1, and to an extent, 2, with Colonel Sanders), the occasional chick flick (50 First Dates) and movies that are absurd to the point of hilarity (Airplane!, Naked Gun, Hot Shots). But I also enjoy movies that make you think and wonder what's going to happen next (Silence of the Lambs) or ask the question, could this happen in our lifetimes (Clear and Present Danger)?
I will happily state that TRT was probably one of the most horrid pieces of filmography that I ever saw - and yes, I did get the jokes, I just thought they were bad. Since my cash is limited and my time is iffy, I generally tend to only watch movies that I know right off are going to fit into my personal preferences - even if they're limited plot events such as AvP or Bad Boys II. I look forward to the day when I have more time and cash to devote to going to the theater and paying out 7$ for a movie that's 'iffy' - and since I don't see that coming any time soon, I'll wait for them to come on cable at a time when I have space available on my TiVo (to join the ranks of Last Samuri and Master and Commander of the Far Side of the World).

Thin Red Line was a piece of shit. And I'm a person that'd like any of the movies being mentioned in this list.
It was long, drawn out, it was going way overboard trying to express the sadness, loneliness, and hopelessness of the war. It really got your emotions going, but certainly didn't need to do that for 3 hours. Acting was good, but it like positvely is a movie you'd never want to watch twice. 0 replay value.

The Royal Tennenbaums was excellent, and if you didn't like it, you won't like Life Acquatic. Life Acquatic was wonderful. It was completely original and an entirely new form of directing.
Other movies that Akaran shouldn't consider:
The Rules of Attraction
Big Fish
Lost in Translation
Garden State
Road to Perdition
Unbreakable
The Green Mile
Movies he should consider:
L.A. Confidential
Sum of All Fears
Back to School
The Last Castle

Yay, FINALLY someone agrees with me on this one. I actually never finished it, i got too bored around 1 hour into the movie, around the place where Woody Harrelson manage to blow his own ass off.

I actually thought that was the best part in the movie, not because it was Woody Harrelson getting his ass blown off, but how even the best soliders could die for stupid reasons very quickly... furthering the sadness and hopelessness of the war...
Still, after that point I still hated the movie.

I did watch Unbreakable. I thought the acting in it was ok, the plot kind murky, and the ending interesting. Deffinately not one of my favorites, but it did leave me with some unforgettable memories.
edit: I also saw The Last Castle (good, sad ending) and the Sum of All Fears (excellent).

Archeiron, Hook - read the book adaptation when I was a kid, then saw the movie a few years later. Probably still have the book of it if I haven't donated it to a library.

Just how old are you? I figured you for about 37 going on 70 with the sense of adventure of a 90 year old, but if you read the adaptation of Hook as a "kid" then you could very well be younger than I am.Akaran_D wrote:Point Shot!

You keep mentioning movies based on Tom Clancy books as though they're some kind of art house/sundance award winning ultra-quality intellectual movies... Let me make something crystal clear...Akaran_D wrote:...and the Sum of All Fears (excellent).
IF THE MOVIE STARS BEN AFFLECK OR IS BASED ON A MASS MARKETED BOOK OR HAS HUGE EXPLOSIONS, CHANCES ARE IT'S THE SAME TYPE OF MOVIES YOU NORMALLY WATCH.
It might surprise you to find out that the mass-marketed Clancy books are actually dumbed down even more to make it into movie format... and probably also so Affleck can read the script.

Tom Clancy books are damn good. And to be completely honest, I don't normally watch thrillers - for Clancy and Lecter, I make the exception.
Thinking about the 'what ifs' that his books present is really an enjoyable way to spend some time.

I enjoy Tom Clancy's books. Technology-wise, they're very well researched. They are however, mass-marketed and formulaic.
The problem with movies based on Tom Clancy's books is that the best parts of the books: realistic tactics, equipment, and technology don't make it to the screen. EVER. The Hunt for Red October was by far the best. Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of all Fears were THE WORST. The movies are action-flicks. Period. They are not 'Thrillers'.
Thrillers would be movies like:
Memento
The Sixth Sense
Psycho
Se7en
The Silence of the Lambs
I will contend that if you can watch Bottlerocket and Rushmore, and not thoroughly enjoy them, you have no soul.

Exactly. Lynks is dead on.Lynks wrote:People keep posting movies that don't make you think, like Hook and Sum of all Fears. I think Noel was looking for thought provoking ones like:
Donnie Darko
Six Degrees of Separation
Magnolia
A Clockwork Orange
I was going to mention that Hook, though enjoyable (especially because the baby that was used in the movie was the daughter of a family that lived across the street from me at the time of its release) is not the kind of movie I'm looking for at all.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with a movie that doesn't make me think. Sometimes, I even prefer it!
Of course, I will use the excuse (that some of you can't) that I use my brain outside of the movie theatre...
On that note -
Gimmie a good girlie romantic comedy any day
F intense arsy drama crap.
Worst movie ever - Cold Mountain

A Clockwork Orange is probably my favorite Kubrick film, followed closely by Dr. Strangelove. I watched Clockwork again the other day, but it's been a while since I've watched Dr. Strangelove. I think I'll have to dig that out of storage for tonight.
