I know it's ridiculously hard to narrow it to ten, but let's try to and then discuss a bit.

In not particular order....

*The Godfather Series
*Shine
*The Postman
*Rocky Series
*Usual Suspects
*LOTR Series
*The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Series (Which include A Fist Full of Dollars and A Few Dollars More)
*Chaplin
*Momento
*Roots

I don't think I could do a top 10 list. I'm terrible at thinking of movies I love when I set my mind to it. Has to be something I stumble across. That being said, possibly my #1 would be Rear Window.

Aye. It is hard as hell. And when you see others lists you think, OH CRAP, how did I forget that one?

For example...Tombstone and the Matrix Series. Also, both Young Guns :)

Amadeus

American Beauty
Bridge over the River Kwai
Pennies from Heaven
The Big Lebowski
Godfather II
Seven
Pulp Fiction
As Good as it Gets
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Terrible memory for this sort of thing, not neccesarily "good" movies but "rewatchable". In no order and would probably change tomorrow:

As Good as it Gets - Fantastic movie, wouldn't have remembered it though
What dreams may come
The Man who would be King
The Royal Tennenbaums
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
City of the Lost Children
Nightmare before Christmas
Yellowbeard
Blazing Saddles

Any movie with Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Ben Affleck, Ben Stiller, Jennifer Lopez, Adam Sandler, and some others that don't immediately come to mind is automatically placed on the "Do not see" list.

You know the feeling you guys get when you read one of my posts and can't beleive someone just said something that stupid?

I'm having one of those moments now reading yours, noel/dregor...

edit: Gonna add that I'm very curious to know the life experiences and pathways your minds take to be able to watch something like that and come to the conclusion that it rules, and that I hope to one day be able to understand how you reached that conclusion. :boggle:

...

Basically those movies have subtle humor. I would go so far as to say that movies of that type, which would include movies like, 'The Big Lebowski', 'Pulp Fiction', and others I'm too busy to spend time naming, require the audience to be slightly more cognizant of what's going on, and slightly more aware of the intricacies of things like, interpersonal relationships, language, etc. I.e., it's not just shit blowing up and vampires being body slammed.

...

Kind of with the flow of the thread...

Am I the only person that thinks that The Fellowship of the Ring was near perfect, but the other two movies, though great accomplishments for various reasons, aren't really in the same class? i.e. the first one was great, the second two so-so...

I feel a sensation of comfort washing over me, not unlike slipping into a steaming hot tub of water, knowing that you read my post and can't understand it. It heartens and emboldens me to know that you and I do not operate on the same frequencies. If I were to find out I was the complete dullard you are, I'd have to sit down and cry for a good long while.

The feeling is mutual, Dregor.
If I were to find out that you are the same type of person that I am, and that our thought processes are the same, and thus our reactions to and comprehension of certain events would also be relatively equivalent, I'd feel a bit empty and hollow inside.

Suffice it to say, I'm glad we are different.

The backstory partially, all in all an excellent movie on more than one level.

If you had only seen the things I've seen with your eyes - Another good movie :)

The Fellowship of the Ring was very well done, the next two were decent but don't measure up.

ok here's a grouping of movies that I really enjoy and find it easy to get sucked into watching the rest of it if I catch it: not in order.

Clear and Present Danger
As good as it Gets
Empire Strikes Back
Rounders
Oceans 11
American Psycho
The Great Outdoors
Airplane!
Reservoir Dogs
The Big Lebowski

as for movies of complexity and substance... trying to explain how they are good, is like trying to explain to a religious person how their entire belief system is based on a lie.

No particular order...just listing the movies I could watch at any time.

The Guns of Navarone
Godfather I
Empire strikes back
Stargate
Bladerunner
Office Space
Ocean's 11
Fellowship of the Ring
The Hunt for Red October
The Dirty Dozen

edit: I forgot to add my reasoning for liking fellowship more than the other two, to answer Noel's question: Fellowship had all the character introduction and buildup...the other two movies are just the "to be continued" portion, so there is no buildup, cause its already been done. this gives the "illusion" of a better movie, cause there is so much more involved in telling the personal side of the characters thru actions and conversations, and then conveying them to the audience in many ways. Hence, it adds more substance for the mind to absorb...hence making the first movie in a trilogy usually better than the others....

atleast, that is how I see it.

now THAT was a great scene in movie history....how many takes do you think that one took? I mean, that is a shitload of porno to read off que cards or memorize, and NOT fuckem' up!

Twilight Samurai.....forgot about this movie. Damn fine foreign film....and no, if you haven't seen it, it is not about a samurai who runs around cutting peoples heads off and shit....its about a low level samurai who lost his wife, and is raising his two young girls with no help, and his cenile grandmother. He works two jobs, which in japanese culture, is a big deal (it is demeaning).

Excellent foreign film. If you have not seen it, and like beautifully set films, with a great story, then see this movie...you will not be disapointed....now go rent it!

Thanks for giving a bit of background on Twilight Samurai. It is a wonderfully shot film...and the story truly depicts the culture and way of life of a samurai in feudal Japan. It takes the mysticism/myth/romanticization out of what these men were really like.
