What is it about Anime?

Post by Neziroth »

What is it about Anime that's so special?

My friends all watch it, they all love it, absolutely LOVE IT.

I try to watch it and all I can think of is that it reminds me of cheap looking cartoons... argh it bugs me to hear over and over "Anime is the best" etc etc etc.

So please, what is so great about it that just because something is Anime it's worth watching?

I like the 6 episode FLCL anime series but that one is exceptional with way above average story, music and animation. I tried to get into others but the content just wasn't there to hold my attention.

While were on the topic, I can't really get into manga either. Comics are so much more interesting...better art and story and you don't have to read the pages backwards.

I've never been WAY into it like some of my friends are, but I did grow up watching Robotech and Voltron and I really liked those cartoons.

I think some of it is that Anime is the first place some of our nerd friends saw animated boobage...

There is good, serious, anime:
Cowboy Beboop, Wolf's Rain, Ghost In the Shell, Robotech, ect

Some middle of the road/confusing story anime:
Big O, Trigun, Gundam _insert series title here_, ect

Mindless Fun (but stupid) anime:
DragonBall, FLCL, Fist of the North Star, ect

Mass Marketting Tool anime:
YuGiOh, Pokemon, Zoids, ect

Overdramatised cliche ridden targetted at chicks but really appeals to gay nerds anime:
Inuyasha, Witch Hunter Robin, YuYuHakisho, Rironi Kenshin, dot Hack Sign, Blue Gender, and any series with fights that last 5+ episodes and the main character yells out his move while he is doing it

Overly Cutesy, Borderline Pedophile/Tentical Rape anime:
Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, All Purpose Cat Girl Nuku Nuku and pretty much anything you see little closet furries downloading off the internet with incomprehensably high voiced school girls as central characters.

I like descent serious anime, occasionally get into the mindless fun ones, tolerate the gay cliche ones, but the merchanizing and cutesy ones make my skin crawl. Also, the whole Naughty Tenticle thing is in a class by itself and I have a hard time understanding how so many of those are getting made by major animation studios.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Ah shit, I forgot Cowboy Bebop. That's good too.

What do you mean about mindless fun and FLCL? Those 6 episodes have all sorts of hidden meaning to them and storylines. You can watch them again and again and find something you missed that adds to the story. FLCL plays out on two levels...one level is the wtf level...where you have no fucking clue what's going but the whackiness is still entertaining and good for kids watching ...and on a whole other level, there's an in depth story taking place. It's far from mindless. It has more content than Cowboy Bebop which I really like as well. To be fair, it takes more than one episode to start getting a grip on what's going on. One episode of FLCL would leave you kinda stale. I also prefer the well dubbed english version over the subtitles so it's easy to follow.

Take that mindless fun (but stupid) comment back!

The soundtrack by the Pillows for FLCL rocks.

Image

Here's an FLCL music video by Radiohead - Iron Lung, that people who've seen FLCL may like:

FLCL - Radiohead(Iron Lung) ~34mb

(it won't make a lick of sense to someone who hasn't seen FLCL but you can see what the animation is like I suppose)

Ghost in the Shell are great, just bought the 2nd one too, also good, but dont beat the first one.

Oh, and why havent anyone mentioned Akira? That is THE king of anime, the best ever :).

Basically there are a few series/movies worth watching, but i guess at least 80% of the stuff released are junk. You just need to find the good stuff.

Apart from Ghost in the Shell and Akira, i can also reccomend Battle Angel Alita and Hellsing (ok, i like Alucard, ok?). If youre looking more for the cheesy stories, Princess Mononoke arent that bad. And if youre into the Hentai thing, get the US version of Legend of the Overfiend (nok the UK release, they somehow managed to cencor out 90 min of a 4 hour movie).

I loved Dragon Ball Z, the story is really amazing, if your new to anime, thats one to look at.

Gundam Wing was amazing like, it was a relatively short series, only 50 episodes long, but it is fucking amazing. Intense, intelligent, and emotional story line. The characters are incredibly deep and I really think its one of the best anime series ever made.

Add to the mindless fun(but stupid) anime...Naruto, by the guy who did Dragonballz. Not on tv at all, have to find it to download. My friends are obsessed with it, and I don't understand it at all. It's the same type of anime as DragonballZ. The main character is a young kid who is in some sort of school for insane-super-magic martial arts. His main skill is multiplying himself and kicking ass. It's a pretty fun/funny show, but just like DBZ everyone keeps getting more uber and uber until its just insane. My friends would tell you that it's MUCH better than DBZ. Both shows are pretty silly to me...

Adult Swim was the own, every night at 11 Cowboy Bebop followed by some random anime (Inuyasha/Trigun/FLCL/etc.). Kept me sane when on the road :)

I have never been into anime, but I did really enjoy Akira and Lensman years ago. I have never looked into a series though... I am sure there is a ton of great material out there, I just have trouble watching animation these days aside from Futurama. :P

Maybe someday--my taste in movies switches around every so often.

Oh, I also think someone should make a hentai, er anime about night elves getting kilt by the mageweave bagfull.... even a MS Paint version would do.

I do not understand Far left Liberals or far right conservatives but I am sure at least one or two of them are not stupid...

Anime when done well is excellent entertainment, far superior to most live action stuff. Anime when done poorly is a blight on the medium kind of like Jim Carrey movies (minus Eternal) are to film.

Vampire Hunter D is my fav, but I even like some of the bubbly stuff, depends on the writer more than anything else.

Im in the same exact boat as you, all i see is very shitty animation and odd incongruent plots

I love how whenever theres a battle it shows 2 frozen images of the fighters as they yell with flashing lights behind them for at least 2 minutes

It's very hard to find, if I have a chance to talk to my friend who has all the episodes on his computer, I'll ask him where he got them. It's possible I spelled it wrong or that since it's not popular in the USA that there's no translated name for english...

A few weeks ago I was talking to a Japanese friend of mine who emigrated a year or two ago.

He told me that he had never really watched anime in Japan, nor had any of his friends. He considered anime to largely be entertainment for children, and was utterly baffled by the faux-japanese subculture here.

I've watched a reasonable amount of anime and generally fail to be entertained by it. A few of the more well-known ones that have been mentioned here were OK, but certainly didn't provoke any sort of deep thoughts or grab me in an interesting or unique way. As such, I tend to side with him when he says it's stupid.

If I was more into anime, I'd call you all asshats and tell you why you were wrong, but besides a handful of anime (really FLCL and Cowboy Bebop) I can't defend the genre much as an adult form of entertainment.

I'm not going to knock it though. It's all about whatever makes you happy when it comes to entertaining yourself. That's like faulting someone for liking action movies with no deeper meaning over some other thinker movie. If watching an anime show makes you happy and takes you an hour or two closer to your eventual death in a pleasant way, then so be it. Some people feel they have to have maximum mental stimulation every waking moment. There's room for a certain amount of non intellectual entertainment with big flashy explosions and shiny metal objects mixed in with the rest of your brain food.

I'll go a few rounds with anyone that wants to debate the entertainment value of comics though over in the other forum.

All I've seen has been pretty dumb, bad plots, poor animation, etc...

Seems like 1960s Japanese TV and movies, with animated characters.

I find it hard to find shows that I actually enjoy. Only DVDs that I actually watch every once in a while are:

Akira (wish I could get it with the old voices on DVD)
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Ghost in the Machine
Escaflowne
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

The rest of them sit on a bookcase looking pretty.. I have a better chance of digging up my Atari 2600 and playing River Raid again than watching them.

Unfortunately my friend who worked at this Anime Rental store moved to Japan. Have been meaning to look into this Full Metal Alchemist series though..

The ones I enjoy, favorite to least.

Ghost in a Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Full Metal Alchemist
Cowboy Beebop
Inyuasha
Yu-Yu Hashigomiae (sp)
Witch Hunter Robin

Then there's Futurama, which owns all but GiS, even tho it's American made... don't forget Family Guy or Justice League: Unlimited.

No idea whats so great about anime, except different strokes for different folks.

I don't watch any of it because I don't really care for cartoons anymore. The only cartoon I watch is South Park.

He's a demon on wheels
He's a demon and he's gonna be chasin' after someone.

He's gainin' on you so you better look alive.
He's busy revvin' up a powerful Mach 5.

And when the odds are against him
And there's dangerous work to do
You bet your life Speed Racer
Will see it through.

Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer, Go!

He's off and flyin' as he guns the car around the track
He's jammin' down the pedal like he's never comin' back
Adventure's waitin' just ahead.

Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer, Go!

I've watched every episode of Naruto now, and I think its an excellent series for anyone that likes anime, check it out. Not to mention its a weekly series, theres no seasons, every week is a new episode (or a double episode every two weeks. Good stuff.

I remember liking The Guyver when I was younger. I think I still have the first 6 episodes on VHS, but no VCR. They made a couple crappy live action movies about it with Luke Skywalker in the first one.

Also Space Battleship Yamato, which either spawned, or was spawned by Star Blazers. That was late 70's I think.

Coming back to this really old post...

Previously I'd only watched the first Anime version of Full Metal Alchemist, and liked it. I'd never read the manga, but took the time to read through it, hearing it was different. I also started it with the thought that it was finished, it is not. I still like how the original Anime version of FMA ran, but apparently there's a new series called Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which sticks to the Manga storyline. I'll probably start downloading it at some point, because the first Anime and the Manga basically diverge in storyline right around when they meet up with their Sensei. I'm pretty much a fan of both, but maybe because I watched the Anime first. A lot of people that read the Manga first didn't like the way the first Anime went.

I think the Manga is ending soon, I'm not quite sure how much further it can go, too bad it's a monthly release and now I really want to know what's going to happen. I blew through the Manga in about a week.
