You know, some people can drink, catch a buzz, have a good time and be completely responsible doing it. It is not out of some need to drink that makes me do it when I do it. Some people don't like it, other people cannot handle it. But this holier than thou attitude about a reliance on 'chemical assistance' is ridiculous and ignorant.

Yes, yes He did - wasn't aware this was a religious discussion.
However, that doesn't mean he got drunk on it or even had any Himself (I don't recall it saying that he did), just that the people at the event enjoyed it.
I can see where you're comming from on this, and that's fine. If you feel that alchohol won't effect you, or that you 'need' that buzz to get going, then go for it. Back in His time there were so few things to actually do - drink, eat, sex, work - that drinking was pretty predominant in it. And, it was pretty hard to get drunk and kill someone on your horse.
Now, we have MILLIONS of things to sit down and do for enjoyment. Computers, TV, Movies, books, religious activities, driving, walking, exercising, sex (still a favorite!) and the list goes on and on and on. Is drinking really that 'fun' to keep doing in the face of the infinte ammount of other things you can engage in?

Akaran, your being critical of those that choose to imbide is just another example of what a insufferable shit bag pussy you are. Before you decide to get critical of how other people choose to live, look to cleaning up your own mess of a life (arrrgh matey). Please get over your undeserved superiority complex and put yourself out of all of our misery. Remember - slice along the veins, not across them.
I can honestly say that I don't remember the last time that I was drunk or even buzzed, because it's been so long ago (many years, at least). I do, however, enjoy a good drink rather often. Not everyone that drinks goes out and gets falling down drunk. There are few things I enjoy more than a glass of really good wine or beer with a wonderful meal. I like to have a nice cocktail occasionally, too. Not everyone that drinks does so to get a buzz. For those that do, who the fuck cares? It's their business, and no one elses so long as they behave responsibly (i.e. they don't go hop in their car and run over some school children, etc.)
ON TOPIC: That's a tragic photo, but I'm with Pher on this one - Grolsh without flip tops is probably what incurred the wrath of the gods

Thanks for your concern again Xag, but my life is actually in pretty good standing.
I have a family that loves me, a woman that wants me, a job that appericates me, and friends that respect me. I have hobbies that I can enjoy with not only friends but also loved ones and I have people that I can talk to on a daily basis about anything at any time. The majority of the stress in my life is gone and it is only on rare occasions that I have to deal with bitter souls such as yourself - and most of the time I'm able to find ways to serve them and make them happier in the process. (Edit: And I'm able to do all of it without any chemical additives - nair, drugs, alchohol, nicotine, and caffine as an added plus.) (Edit2: Heck, I'm even on my way towards inner peace.
)
Sooo.. I'm having a great time and a good life, really.

That's all fine and dandy.. But you didn't really address his comments that are actually relevant to the conversation. That being alcohol consumption and how not everyone who drinks it does so to get drunk.Akaran_D wrote:I have a family that loves me, a woman that wants me, a job that appericates me, and friends that respect me. Well As, I would, but I've begun to realize most of Xag's comments aren't relevant to any conversation. He enjoys it, good for him. I think if he can enjoy it in moderation, even better. That, however, isn't going to change my belief that the supposed 'enjoyment' of getting some of that good old fashioned alcohol going through your veins is little more than a shallow attempt to make you feel better about yourself or just feel better in general by undergoing an action that can result in a lack of judgment, misery and physical pain the day after, unwanted childbirth, potentially fatal accidents and a myriad of other problems that come with it.
Yes, I understand that the majority of people that drink beer or wine will have a problem with it and I'm glad for them. However, it's the attraction to the act of consuming the beverage (and the results of the chemical processes that occur after) that has it glorified in the minds of thousands of adults and teenagers across the country... and I just don't see how chugging a brewski back 'for fun' allows for any sort of self worth or advancement in your personal being. /shrug

Lol... look, I don't drink alcohol, I don't like it... but I would never call it an action that can result in unwanted childbirth.. because alcohol is no excuse for that... if you're sober enough to fuck, you're sober enough to wrap it up.Akaran wrote:That, however, isn't going to change my belief that the supposed 'enjoyment' of getting some of that good old fashioned alcohol going through your veins is little more than a shallow attempt to make you feel better about yourself or just feel better in general by undergoing an action that can result in a lack of judgment, misery and physical pain the day after, unwanted childbirth, potentially fatal accidents and a myriad of other problems that come with it.
Alcohol is also no excuse for an accident, because theres a law against it, and it's well known drunk people crash. No drunkard gets in an accident and says "HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!!" People drive drunk because they are morons, and deserve any punishment they receive when in an accident.
Everything else you listed is specific to that one person who has decided to do it anyways and isn't hurting anyone but themselves... you could substitute almost anything for alcohol in this.

Akaran is suffering from one of the Baptist created idealisms that I do not agree with even though I was raised Baptist. Nowhere in the Bible does it EVER say drinking alchohol is bad. Only one edict from God that said to not drink to excess is ever stated in the entire thing. There are many many passages about the drinking of wine and sacrements of it. Jesus had his disciples drink wine to represent his blood. There is also a passage in one book that I would have to look up agains that says "Let them drink to forget their misery."
I take great delight in busting those out as I crack open a beer.

Kil.. this isn't a religious issue for me.
Please don't confuse it as one.
edit:
Hell, it isn't even an upbringing issue for me. My family had no problem seither way with the consumption of alchoholic beverages as long as it was done in moderation.
It's a 'I can't believe people are still this stupid' issue, much like my views on smoking and idiotic rampant partiasnship on both sides of the fence.

I know I'm just ribbin ya. I understand your point of view but I disagree. I think from time to time it's good to hang out with your friends and drink and/or do whatever. It's not because you and your friends have a low self esteem, just you guys want to have a little fun sometimes. When you get drunk and you're with friends, likely there will be some interesting stories afterwards. I've had fun doing this, and I've had fun getting together and playing D&D. I've not had the experience of both, but I'm not sure how that would go.Akaran_D wrote:You can have good parties without booze. =p
That's fine,it's not your thing. Just that I think that it's an experience to be had, and not the "I hate my life" scenario you paint.
Honestly I don't have many friends here who live near me, so I haven't been doing this at all. Drinking alone is indicative of a problem, and may be like the scenario you describe.
I just don't understand how the act of consuming a fermented beverage and slightly altering the functioning of your body chemistry can be an action that anyone would see fit to place a value judgement on. I also don't see why burning plant material and inhaling the smoke, or synthesizing plant leaves into powder and snorting the powder, or harvesting sap from poppies to be ingested in a variety of ways are actions that are worthy of moral judgement.
Certainly you can criticize the actions people take while under the influence of these substances. Most of my friends have sets of rules which they apply to themselves when inebriated. For instance, many people make the rule "no sex without condoms while drunk." These are often people who would be willing to have unprotected sex when sober, but realize that, while drunk, they may not have the mental capacity to determine whether unprotected sex would be safe or not. Generally, these people take full responsibility for their actions, as they should be expected to.
You may not want to use intoxicants. That's fine, I have no problem with that. However, I resent a value judgement being placed upon those who do use intoxicants, simply because of intoxicant use. Again, if you would like to make a value judgement based on peoples behavior while intoxicated, that's fine. Making a value judgement based on the act of ingesting intoxicants is ludicrous.
You may have a desire to not be around people under the influence of intoxicants. As far as I'm concerned, that's too fucking bad. Sometimes we are forced to deal with things we don't like. Personally, I don't like being made to deal with people under the influence of religion, which I personally consider to be as mind-altering and dangerous as any intoxicant. However, I don't give a fuck when people are religious, nor do I make value judgements about them on this basis, nor do I lecture them about the dangers of their foul habit. So please shut the fuck up about everyone elses.
I also know that your opposition to intoxicants is not rooted in religion. That is immaterial to my argument. I feel that many activities that we indulge in are mind-altering and behavior-altering. I feel that religion is an appropriate parallel to intoxicants in this case. There are many more.

Suv, you have a choice.
You can drink a beverage which causes a chemical reaction in your brain that lowers your judgment making abilities in an effort to have 'fun', while at the same time potentially damaging your liver and other vital organs in your body.
Or, you don't.
I have more respect for the person that makes a bad decision when sober than I do for any person that does it under the influence of any chemical that is ingested (be it inhaled, drank, injected, or absorbed through the skin) because while they may still make the same decision that the sober person did, they also made the choice to introduce an element into their body that led to the accident.
We react harshly to people that commit harm to others (either intentionally or non) when under the influence because they made the choice to put themselves into that kind of situation to begin with. It is an element that when misused can lead to self destruction and harm to those around you - those you care about and those you don't.
It is, generally speaking, a stupid choice.
There are hundreds of other ways to fuck yourself up by out there that don't have the risk of deadly consequences.

Actually studies have shown that a glass of red wine contains free radicals, which can help prevent heart disease. I think you're imagining the frat boy binge drinking person, and not the person who drinks responsibly...Akaran_D wrote:Suv, you have a choice.

Things in moderation are good. Even smoking can be beneficial if you don't do it too much. (IE relieve stress, not be at such a risk for other problems because of it.)
I share the contempt for drunk drivers you do, but I'm not blaming it on the chemicals that lead the person to decide to drive, I'm blaming it on the person who had a grain of stupidity in their head to let them even think that was a good idea at all.

Yes. I take some issue with the use of the phrase "lowers your judgement making abilities." I would argue that it alters your judgement making abilities. If you don't understand how your decision making processes have been altered, then you certainly can make decisions that you will regret later.Suv, you have a choice.

Of course, that's only if you're drunk (or blazed, or tweaked, or spun, or rolling...). If you've used your intoxicant of choice in moderation, it is likely that your judgement abilities will be no more impaired than they would be after you eat a bar of chocolate or play a computer game for 6 hours straight or come back from church. They are altered in a minor but subtle way. The fact that they are altered due to substance consumption as opposed to activities or emotions is immaterial.
Additionally, many intoxicants, such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogens have been shown to have beneficial side effects, both physically and mentally. This is not to say that they do not have negative side effects, nor is it to argue that the positive side effects outweigh the negative. The fact remains that you cannot make a blanket statement that drinking alcohol is bad for you, because in some ways it is and in some ways it isn't, and sometimes it is and sometime it's not.
Feel free to disrespect anyone who makes idiotic decisions while they're fucked up. Feel free to criticize them for ingesting substances that led to their making bad decisions; they should have exercised restraint and understood their limits. This does nothing to change the fact that actions people undertake while under the influence of intoxicants can be blameworthy, but the actual act of ingesting those substances remains morally neutral.I have more respect for the person that makes a bad decision when sober than I do for any person that does it under the influence of any chemical that is ingested (be it inhaled, drank, injected, or absorbed through the skin) because while they may still make the same decision that the sober person did, they also made the choice to introduce an element into their body that led to the accident.
You're missing my point, which I feel I've sufficiently elaborated in this post and the one prior. We react harshly to people that commit harm to others (either intentionally or non) when under the influence because they made the choice to put themselves into that kind of situation to begin with. It is an element that when misused can lead to self destruction and harm to those around you - those you care about and those you don't.
No, there are not. There are hundreds of other ways to fuck yourself up by out there that don't have the risk of deadly consequences.
How do you react to a situation like the one Spankes described, in which he removes the potential for his actions to have a negative impact upon others?

I've never heard anyone make the assumption that hallucinogens are good for you.. would love to see a study backing that one up.
Further, as he's busy destroying himself, he is placing an unecessary burden on his family or other friends that care for him. He also places a burden on the healthcare system when his liver goes, assuming he doesn't die from an alchohol related accident before then.
Suv, how can consuming a beverage KNOWN to have serious, even life threatening results be a 'morally neutral' decision? When I load a gun to go kill someone with it - is that 'morally neutral'? No, it's called preperation. I'm not saying that by taking a drink you are going out to kill someone, but you're putting yourself and others at risk when you go out and get yourself blasted out of your skull.
Too many bad things can happen in life that require you to be alert to react to them. Dulling that alertness is one of the ways to get yourself in those situations to begin with..
Easily - self destruction. I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

those are some excellent slogans.
You are definitely going to have your senses sharpened 24/7 for immenent ninja-attack, so you probably have a 1,000% better chance of surviving past age 22 than I do.
actually though there is evidence that drinking some beverages in moderation is not only good for cardio-vascular health.
also something that you might want to consider is that being happy probably is healthy too. Lowering cortisol levels in general keeps fat deposition at lower levels which of course impacts health positively in numbers of ways.
i of course was merely being silly when i posted initially "to deal with people like you"
if you choose not to drink thats great. But you obviously know very little about alcohol in general. Sure many people in your age group might drink Budweiser and in general act like complete fools while they drink.
I certainly did.
A lot of the alcoholic drinks that are on the market are crafted to be savored, and often are excellent accents to quality meals, if not enjoyed alone.

V, I'm not discounting the benifits towards your own health if drinking small ammounts every couple of days. I've said several times that if you can do it in moderation, good for you - but if you rely on it, I think you're an idiot.
Thankfully, most of the people that post here with an regularity aren't of the idiot persuasion (I think). However, for the thousands of teens across the country that get drunk and put their lives at risk, for the thousands of idiotic men who drink their paychecks away, for the thousands of morons that don't know their limit, I have nothing but disdan for their actions.
As you say, some are made to be enjoyed over time, and not all at once, which is fine. But it also leads into this image that is personified as "drink beer be cool". And far too many idiots get suckered into that and end up as drunks for the rest of their lives.
So forgive me for saying - crying over a spilled beer truck is potentially one of the most idiotic things I've seen or heard of in many months now.
edit: This thread has been good for about 40 some VV's so far.
'ing it.

Calm the hell down. Equating drinking a beer or glass of wine to loading a gun is reaching about as far as possible. That's the kind of panicky emotional argument I'd expect from someone who is speaking on a topic he has no experience with, and can't come up with a real argument for.
I occasionally have a glass of wine with dinner. Sometimes I'll have a few cocktails. Sometimes, when I know that I have a ride home, or a place to crash, and I don't have to work the next day, I'll get completely fucked up. All that said, there's never been a point in my life where I was so drunk that I turned into some kind of monster that and didn't know the difference between right and wrong.
I don't have to drink to have a good time, and neither does anyone else, but sometimes when I'm having a good time, I drink, and I enjoy it, and if you don't have any experience with it, you should keep your personal opinions which are based on zero facts, and zero experience... to yourself.
Edit: It should be noted that getting fucked up for me is like a 1-3 times per year occasion, largely due to the fact that alchohol is #2 in calories per gram to fat.

I think you're confused as to which activites actually lead to the consequences you outlined above.Akaran_D wrote:That, however, isn't going to change my belief that the supposed 'enjoyment' of getting some of that good old fashioned alcohol going through your veins is little more than a shallow attempt to make you feel better about yourself or just feel better in general by undergoing an action that can result in a lack of judgment, misery and physical pain the day after, unwanted childbirth, potentially fatal accidents and a myriad of other problems that come with it.

You fail to separate responsible use from abuse. Certainly excessive drinking / substance abuse has known potentially serious side effects, but drinking in moderation has not been shown to have any long term health risks. As others have stated, there's a signifigant body of evidence to support that daily consumption of certain alcoholic beverages offers several health benefits. There's no disputing the fact that abusing alcohol is bad for you, and an irresponsible thing to do.Akaran wrote:Suv, how can consuming a beverage KNOWN to have serious, even life threatening results be a 'morally neutral' decision? To extend your gun analogy, jumping in a car after slamming a fifth of bourbon and running over a dozen nuns at a cross walk is the moral equivalent you shooting someone Drinking responsibly and in moderation, however, is the moral equivalent of shooting clay pigeons or plinking beer cans off a fence rail with your grandpa's .22, and is not something that you have any reason to make a moral judgement about.
