A lot of people don't know what "farming" means in this context and tend to think of somebody just hanging around a particular area for a while to look for good drops or items. Guilds always talk about farming instances for good items. That's not the kind of "farming" we're talking about here.

This "farming" is companies paying extremely low wage laborers, usually chinese and korean, to manage bot characters 24/7 to farm gold or items. We're not talking chinese americans working for minimum wage. We're talking little warehouse in the impoverished outskirts of Taipei or wherever. Think sweat shop labor, with carpal tunnel instead of sweat. The companies then sell the items or proceeds on ebay or other auction sites for real cash, which they use to pay the miniscule wages of the guys running the bots and keep a good profit margin for themselves.

It's really a great small scale money making scheme. You can literally pay people next to nothing. The monthly account subscription costs more than the wages to keep it manned 24/7.

There are numerous downsides to this for people that just want to play. Signficant effects on the economy for one, and if they take over an area you want to hunt or quest in, just wave goodbye to it. There's really nothing good about it for the game. The only positive is it puts food on the table for some otherwise even more impoverished foreigners. Although it's hard to consider sweat shop labor a strong positive.
Sweatshops for farming WoW items...Wtf...

They're there on our server, too. I'm almost positive Rinda is at very least a pro-farmer account, if not a botter/hacker. Couple others, too... in Azshara 24/7, either no reply or "???" when you talk to them...

Imagine this, each time you steal a kill, you are killing a Korean. I don't know if I could live with that kind of pressure.
