iPod

Post by Akaran_D »

Looking for information on who makes a good portable MP3 player and the average price for one. Looking for one with at least 10hrs of music storage, more would be better. Also looking for one with compatability with iTunes.

Thanks!

Gee Fash, would you?!

No, but seriously - is iPod the best one out there or are there other brands that offer better battery life, storage, ect that also have iTunes compatability?

iPod is the king. The Dell DJ and Creative Nomad are comparable for lower price, but neither uses iTunes and both have odd quirks that the iPod doesn't. Bottom line is everyone I know that has one says get an iPod.

Dankee Ten, exactly the kind of response I was hoping to get (about any brand, not necessarily iPod.)

The only drop on the iPOD is its battery life. Both in the life of a single charge and the life of the battery itself. Plus another thing that I love about the ipod is the iTune peripheral from Griffin... I'm not sure if any other brands have that sort of thing, but its quite a boon to portability.

iPod was beat pretty soundly in PC Magazine last I checked by the Creative Nomad I believe. Personally, I am not an iPod fan but that is pretty much personal preference.

An important consideration when looking at technology is to examine sales and popularity. While this may not seem on the surface like a valid way to review technology, you will find that the accessories vendors will build more peripherals for the most popular mp3 player than any other. This is clearly the case with the iPod: there are a tremendous number of accessories and extra gadgets that can be added on to an iPod. No other player can compete with iPod's range of add-ons. Choosing an iPod will give you more options to expand later that will not be as extensive with any other player.

Additionally, you will have a larger chance that your technology remains compatible with new innovations because Apple will try to maintain backwards compatibility with their existing market share in order to maintain high sales. This will not be the case if you pick a player that disappears from the market in the next twelve months. You will have reasonable success with software updates, fixes, upgrades, etc on an iPod for some time to come.

The cost seems a bit steep to me for what you're buying. As far as $\Mb + features it's a good deal, but it also seems overpriced for what I'd use it for.

I've got a RCA 512Mb MP3 player that cost me about $70, I'm very happy with it. No funky software needed, just drag and drop files and directories onto it. Doesn't do anything but play music, though I guess I could use it for file transfers and such.

Apple continues to not get what's important. They need to add at least digital FM receiver to the iPod. The mini flash memory stick of gum sized MP3 players have this feature so the mammoth iPods should have this. The cost is insignificant but the value is high...and adding AM would have me buying one at lunch but that would be like the second coming of jesus for Apple to do something that practical.

To be fair on the AM side of things, I've only found one model out there with AM for small (IPod or smaller) MP3 players. I guess I'm the only person in the universe that listens to talk radio.

At least personally speaking, if I had the money to and bought an iPod it would be so I never ever ever have to listen to FM radio again.

So I could care less if it has that.

As long as you have a good way to be introduced to new music other than FM (I'm sure there's plenty of ways via the net), you're probably right.

Talk Radio (AM) on the other hand can't be replaced by MP3s but is still something I would like to mix in with listening to MP3 music.

My radio's been set to 88.5 (WMNF) for a long time now. If you're on the west side of town you can probably get it. Odd station, you can hear just about anything from Bluegrass to Death Metal on it.

"Regular" radio is a huge steaming load of clear channel. Looking at MP3 capable decks to put in my truck.

I went to the store over a year ago to pick up an MP3 player... drooled over the top end 20gig ipod at the time... and then saw the Creative NoMad Zen, same 20gig storage, but $200 cheaper... yep, $200...

So I bought the creative. well it was a big heavy brick with even worse battery life than i hear complained about with the ipod.. and I sold it for a loss to someone on IRC.

The new Sony mp3 player reputedly has amazing battery life, so if that's one of your main considerations you might want to check it out.

I like sony, but as long as they keep that ATRAC3 proprietary bullshit their stuff will always be second rate. if they came out with an mp3 player i'm glad to hear it

If you were griping about lack of XM, I would totally be onboard, but lack of FM is a reason to buy for me. Most FM radio just repeats the same playlisted crap over and over again forever.

Here you go.

I'm always a little wary about first gen products, and even though Sony have been the kings of portable media for a long time, there's no telling what sort of difficulties this one will have growing up. It looks nice, though!
