Looking for some advice from guitar playing vets.

I've been getting into guitar lately. I have a dozen or so chords down but I can't figure out some good songs to get started with.

Could I get some recomendations?

Trying to learn Zeppelin at my level = bad idea I've learned.

the first song i could really play from start to finish was Street Spirit from Radiohead. Its very easy to play and sounds very impressive, considering.

Might not be quite what you're expecting.. but its an excellent trainer for picking..

Animals - House of the Rising Sun

These were the first two songs I learned on guitar. Very easy to throw in some crude leads on both too!

Iron Man, Smoke on the Water, and pretty much any rock song from the 80's should be relatively simple to learn. Those were the days of fairly few chords for most bands. Kiss, Wasp, Scorpions, etc..

Just don't go to the music store and play Stairway to Heaven, Wayne.

Best call: Songs that you like. Practicing on songs that you don't care about just makes it an exercise in technique and not in musicianship - you might as well do both at the same time.

Whatever you do, don't try to play this when you're starting to learn guitar. Hell, I still can't play it...but it's a great song. I hope one day I can play it smoothly from beginning to end.

The best advice is music you like, because that is going to motivate you to practice repeatedly which is the only way to truly learn.

I bought a U2 guitar tab book when i picked up guitar in the late 80s, and it was better than the teacher i went to 2 lessons with. i liked U2 a lot, and the songs were not technically difficult to play.

there is some zeppelin stuff that is pretty easy. Whole Lotta Love comes to mind. Rock And Roll has some parts that you can pick up in the not too distant future.

If you like music similar to Zeppelin, maybe Black Sabbath. As some people mentioned, many of those songs are not terribly difficult to learn.

Just surf various websites with Guitar Tabs and grab some stuff and give it a try.

Well, I just started getting into guitar myself (here's a link to my thread from last summer).

I think Vor's advice is pretty good: find something you like, as it will keep you interested. For me, my desire was not just to learn guitar, but to learn music in general, so I have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons I have been taking: it's nice to be able to read music, and begin to understand what makes a chord a 7th, or a minor, or a diminished, or whatever.

By the way, as an update, I still am enjoying the Seagul guitar I bought in the summer, but I also need to report that 'Oggie plugged in just outside of Newport'* last fall: I now own an American Telecaster as well.



*Vague reference to Dylan in 1965 - I live in Middletown, the next town over from Newport
