Maybe you should re-read what I said in the beginning.
instead of alienating the other 77% of the population all could unite and get behind such a day
Who, besides racist fucks like yourself are going to aliented by a holiday in honour of MLK?

OK I'm going to go out on a limb here... a very thin one and try to see if I can understand the point Mid says he was originally trying to make.
Based upon the fact that we no longer have George Washington day, whom I would dare argue is more important that MLK, nor do we have Lincoln day, again who we could probably argue had a bigger impact, overall, than MLK, we should no longer have MLK day but set aside a day to celebrate everyone involved in the civil rights movement rather than center on one person. Is that the thought?
In response I would say that at least for now it's not necessary. While MLK days does bear his name it bears that as a symbol not necessarly for the man himself but what he stood for. Yes you could argue that the others did/do as well. However they aren't as recent in timeframe. For many, both inside and outside the movement, MLKs speeches and personality, what he represented is that symbol they were looking for in order to make a positive change.
My guess is that in 100 year it will probably be Civil Rights day, but while we still have people alive for whom Dr. King is a personal symbol we should leave it as is... IMHO.

Really?Lynks wrote:Mid, you fail to realize the reason why they put all the President's b-day into one holiday.
I would guess it wouldn't be very effective to have too many Federal Holidays.
I would also guess that political correctness played a part in it.
Just as it is more efficient to have one day for all Presidents. I think it would be more efficient to have a Civil Rights Day, honoring all those who lost their lives, or even those who didn't, who fought so hard for Civil Rights for all minorities and women. We have come a long way over the last 100 years and it is due to those people. I don't feel MLK should get all the accolades. But, I also understand the black community would take it as a slap in the face. So while I feel it is just, it will probably take some time.

You ignoring the fact you said this? This was about race. YOU threw down the race card. YOU made the assumption that white people are alienated by the MLK holiday.instead of alienating the other 77% of the population
Why can't you just stop trying to backpedal and admit YOU WERE WRONG.

I can't talk right now. I am on my way to a MLK cookout. (not really) Get my point? Go ahead and make up the wonderous things you are doing today on MLK day. They will be lies and you know that. All I did was suggest a away to bring more people together. Gosh, what an awful human being I am. The truth really irks a lot of you doesn't it? Here is a thought, one I have had in the past but this thread defintely brought back to the surface...
We have MLK day right? Why don't we have a Margret Sanger day? I would dare say that without her and those in her movement MLK and others in the Civil Rights movement some 40 years later wouldn't have ever even been heard. While everyone focuses on the fact that, especially in the South, many places were segregated until the 60s, it seems an even greater atrocity to me that Women couldn't even vote until the 20s... but that's just my opinion.
Perhaps for some MLK represents the women's movement for equiality as well. I hope so but would still like to see something dedicated to women who fought so hard for what they believed in...
I guess I just can't help it... I love women

Once again, I make the suggestion to educate oneself about why MLK is revered over other civil rights activists. Read his history and most importantly, his speeches. They are eloquent as well as impassioned.
MLK was also able to connect with the "other side" in a way that had not been done. It's one thing to incite those in a repressed group to action, quite another to get the attention of everyone else as well. Sanger didn't do that.

I think it would be simpiler to understand if MLK was a little green man from outer space...
I think I understand what Mid was attemting to say. That the man is not as important as the cause he served. While I can agree with the reasoning, I have a differance of opinion. Here is why:
Honor. This man stood up to the tide, and was ultimately swept under and killed for doing what a patriot does. He fought to better the world and better ourselves, to teach a lesson of tolerance and community. In the time he was alive, his ethnic group was treated like shit. While this probably served as a catalyst to head this movement, it did not affect his end statement. He fought for equality. He died for equality.
In my mind, serving such a cause and dying for it makes Martin Luther King Jr. a hero. I think that to remember the man is just as important as the message he carried. I think he deserves the immortal legacy he left behind.
Mid, I can see where your statement might help, but I can also see where it might hurt. We as a country need our heroes. I have a differance of opinion, but still do not think you are racist.

To be considered great, generally a social activist has to die for a cause. Then they get a holiday named after them. Its a religious convention that has carried over into the general psyche. Christmas is sort of in this vein (though easter is the official celebration of christ's death, ect) but it sort of coopted the existing pagan holiday of the Winter Solstice. Most of our other national holidays are about someone dying over a cause, including MLK day. MLK was also far more centrist than most civil rights movement leaders at the time and his message applies to all people, as others pointed out in this thread.
The only real issue I have is that why do we have to have a person get killed to celebrate their message or genius? Because guilt at taking things too far is the only real means of getting certain extreme elements of society (read Midnyte) to come on board for such things.
You need to do some serious soul searching Mid.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower

The difference between MLK and Sanger, and other rights leaders is that they were going for specific groups, MLK was inclusive, not exclusive, he was pro EVERYONE not a specific group, he was prodemocracy, profreedom, proequality, and thusly MLK day IS A CIVIL RIGHTS DAY BY DEFAULT. Celebration of individual presidents would have gotten out of hand, especailly as we have more than 40 of them so we combined them, saying we need to dilute it to a "civil rights day" is just the white racist excuse to try to celebrate anyone other than a black man. Nothing you can say will validate your racist mindset Midnyte, because you are INCAPABLE of seeing past it and touching reality.
Your argument that it needs to be more inclusive is merely because your racist background does not allow you to see anything else than black and white.

Thank to me MLK Jr. and Civil Rights has gotten a good look the past two days.
Thank you MLK Jr. for giving your life so we may even have these open discussions.
I've decided to honor MLK Jr. day and the upcoming Black History month with watching Roots again. If you haven't watched Roots, I highly recommend it. It will show some of you what racism really is. Not what you make up in your little tiny minds and throw labels at.

Was also watching a documentary the other day and he referred to the Native Americans as little better than animals for warring amongst themselves all the time.. certainly even lesser than the negros.Honest Abe wrote:I can conceive of no greater calamity than the assimilation of the Negro into our social and political life as our equal. . . If this is what constitutes an intellectual discussion for you, I'm sorry. This is hardly an intellectual or even intelligent debate.
