Can sleeping help make you thin?

Can sleeping help make you thin?

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- A study published on Monday found that people who sleep less tend to be fat, and experts said it's time to find if more sleep fights obesity.

"We've put so much emphasis on diet and exercise that we've failed to recognize the value of good sleep," said Fred Turek, a physician at Northwestern University.

"In fact society emphasizes just the opposite," in work places where billed hours are crucial and long work days are common, he added.

Monday's study from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk covered 1,000 people and found that total sleep time decreased as body mass index -- a measure of weight based on height -- increased.

Men slept an average of 27 minutes less than women and overweight and obese patients slept less than patients with normal weights, it said.

In general the fatter subjects slept about 1.8 hours a week less than those with normal weights.

"Americans experience insufficient sleep and corpulent bodies. Clinicians are aware of the burden of obesity on patients," the study said.

An extra 20 minutes
"Our findings suggest that major extensions of sleep time may not be necessary, as an extra 20 minutes of sleep per night seems to be associated with a lower body mass index," it added.

"We caution that this study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between restricted sleep and obesity, (but) investigations demonstrating success in weight loss via extensions of sleep would help greatly to establish such a relationship."

The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, along with an editorial by Turek and Northwestern colleague Joseph Bass commenting on it and related research.

In an interview with Reuters, Turek said some studies have shown sleep deprivation causes declines in an appetite suppressing protein hormone called leptin, and increases in another hormone that causes a craving for food.

In addition neuropeptides in the brain governing sleep and obesity appear to overlap, he said.

"It is now critical to determine the importance of lack of sufficient sleep during the early formative years in putting our youth on a trajectory toward obesity ... a trajectory that could be altered if sleep loss is indeed playing a role in this epidemic," the editorial said.

Obesity has been rising dramatically in developed countries and reached epidemic levels in the United States, it added, leading to a variety of health problems.

"In recent years, a new and unexpected 'obesity villain' has emerged, first from laboratory studies and now ... in population-based studies: insufficient sleep," it said.

"However, while there is a growing awareness among some sleep, metabolic, cardiovascular, and diabetes researchers that insufficient sleep could be leading to a cascade of disorders, few in the general medicine profession or in the lay public have yet made the connection," it added.
The only reason sleeping makes you thin is because you're not shovelling food into your mouth while you're asleep. What kind of lame study is this?

Yeah, loath as I am to get into a pissing contest on this issue, but no one w/ a substance abuse issue should be giving people shit about will power.

Why? Is he trying to quit and failing? In that case, you would be right.

If he's happy doing drugs then will power isn't even relevant. You could criticize him for plenty of other things, but his willpower would not be an issue.

Yeah, there is a huge difference between not having the ability to quit doing something and not wanting to do it. Most people that are overweight arent overweight on purpose, they wish they could lose weight but they do not have the will to do what that would take.

I drink, smoke, etc and I have great willpower. I can do anything I want to do and if I really want to do something nothing will stop me from doing said thing, but I still do these things because I WANT to do them.

This has been mentioned before, weight loss isn't solely about willpower, genetics plays a significant role. And a lot of the time, people trying to lose weight actually don't eat enough.

Keep smoking though. Put a few more years behind that wise choice and see how easily it will be for you to stop. You certainly won't say it was easy, I can assure you.

...i have no substance abuse issues, i dont know where this comes from

I now only smoke about once a week or every 2 weeks (depending on the occasion) the same goes for drinking...i dont do use any other drugs besides alcohol and marijuana

Although I do strongly believe in the legalization of most “drugs” for recreational use, there are benefits both in civil liberties and in our economy…legalize a handful of illegal narcotics and our deficit will be cut in half in four years just based on that alteration

People with these "genetics" are also more likely to gain muscle mass faster then others, if they used the same genetics in the weight room to there benefit they would have no issues...bullshit excuse

You have zero fucking idea what you're talking about.

Specific genes dictate your storage propencity. Just call it ignorance on your part.

Try again or better yet, don't since you have zero knowledge on the subject

no one has an excuse to be overweight… regardless of genetics, of course its easier for some over others, yet there is no one on earth who is unable to control there body fat based solely on genetics

no I am not a nutritionist and I have very little knowledge in that area, my above comment was based on common sense and people I have known who managed to quickly get in shape after being considerably overweight

I'm talking about losing weight. The assertion was made that people don't because they have no willpower. That's the line that is bullshit to millions of people who are trying, some successful, some not. If you fall in the latter category, it's not necessarily about a lack of willpower. not by a longshot. In fact, those people may be paying a lot more attention to what goes in their bodies than someone who just happens to be thin.

I'm glad you know people who lost weight. It's a terrific achievement and gives massive health benefits.

If sleeping made you thin, I'd be thinner than Karen Carpenter.

Point taken...but people in this country seem to love engaging in the latest trimspa or atkins diet trend to avoid physical activity…all the dieting and carb/calorie watching on earth isn’t going to make you loose 50 lbs if you don’t exercise/ work out in one manner or another
