Wow

Post by Dregor Thule »

Ok, so over the weekend there was some huge broohaha on the WoW forums regarding the guild Kali Compton on Tichondrius. It basically started as someone posting a listing of their guild roster (taken from wowrankings.com or something) as a "avoid these idiots at all costs" thing. I think. It's very hard to make sense of the gibberish there, it's like the movie I, Robot, and all the robots are Sweetkastings. Anyways, said guild was also the guild of Nebu/Gfraizer, resident Blizzard "web guy" and forum n.. moderator, or at least was before the team of community guys was put in charge of that. There was some talk about which character was his.

Anyway, the thread got locked and deleted, and, well.. here, I'll let Blizzard themselves explain the situation. I think Ordinn posted this.
Over the weekend, a thread was posted on the Tichondrius realm forum warning Horde players of certain guilds and characters they should look out for while adventuring. This thread contained information on a Blizzard employee’s guild, and conjecture was made on which character that employee played. This thread was deleted, and all subsequent threads created on this topic were closed. Several other threads containing references to this guild were also deleted, and a few players were wrongly suspended or banned from the forums for participating in these threads. We would like to correct this mistake. If you feel you were wrongly banned or suspended from the forums, please email your character name and the name of the realm you play on to wowreportedpost@blizzard.com. Furthermore, please note that we are taking measures to ensure this does not happen again.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this caused and thank you for your understanding and patience.

In addition, as part of our normal name-review process, the aforementioned guild’s name was reviewed last week and was found to be in violation of World of Warcraft’s naming policy. The name violates the rule dealing with real-world references, and is subject to the same procedure as other guilds. Therefore, the guild will be disbanded and reimbursed for their tabard, and will have to re-form using a different name. Please note that these are two separate issues that have the unfortunate coincidence of requiring attention at the same time.
Now, ok, it's fairly vague as in what "measures" were taken, but still, I was surprised they did even this. I expected the standard company dickslapping that is common regarding abuse of powers and MMO's. On one hand I say cool, how novel. On the other I say oh hell, the incessant whining of forum trolls made this happen? Either way, thought it was worth pointing out.

Oh, and disbanding the guild was LOLeriffic. The guild was generally idiots from run-in's in beta, so couldn't have happened to a better bunch.

I'm pretty surprised that they would publicly admit this. It's completely irresponsible and just proves to me (not that I didn't already need it proven) how utterly immature some Blizzard employees are. I guess when you police a board of retarded juveniles, you're just as retarded as they are.

Overall though, good to hear that someone stepped up to the plate of higher ground.

I'm going to report "The Travelers" as an RL naming violation, as The Travelers is an insurance company in Hartford, Conn.

G. Frazier has been in each and every incarnation of Kali "whatever" in every phase of the game since alpha. He even used to use the name Nebu (his forum name) back in Alpha.

The man thrives on noteriety and I'm not surprised that he was the one that banned a few people from the forum in a power-trip.
