Yeah, nice to know we've managed to largely cull the heard of crackheads, 12yr olds and people with low spec crap ass machines from our game.

Your system is probably better than mine, but I'm bashing WoW's 3rd grade graphics engine, which I think is the most loathesome piece of monkey junk I've ever laid eyes upon.
And, you also have the Blizzard Fanbois and their collective 3rd grade mentality.. so I guess it all works out.

Yeah it really sucks that their video engine actually performs well, and scales to a variety of systems.Akaran_D wrote:Your system is probably better than mine, but I'm bashing WoW's 3rd grade graphics engine, which I think is the most loathesome piece of monkey junk I've ever laid eyes upon.

I've not played EQ2, but I did play EQ1 and EQ1 with the 'upgraded' graphics engine, as well as SWG which is as close to the EQ2 graphics engine I want to get. I will reject out of hand, any assertion that EQ2 has a well designed graphics engine. At the time I was playing SWG, I had the absolute best PC you could build, and no I could put anything from a GeForce 4 -> FX5900 -> RADEON 9800 Pro in my chassis and could not achieve more than 30 FPS. Based on the forums, it was a pretty common phenomenon.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just because someone likes the graphics in World of Warcraft doesn't really make them a 'fanboi'. WoW's graphics have heart and soul. EQ2's have neither.Akaran_D wrote:Your system is probably better than mine, but I'm bashing WoW's 3rd grade graphics engine, which I think is the most loathesome piece of monkey junk I've ever laid eyes upon.

That's in my humble opinion, of course.

Until I actually played WoW I thought the graphic looked "cartooney" However there is a lot of realism in the engine and it runs great on many different systems... more importantly, the game is a hellofalot of fun!

Sorry Noel, we see eye to eye on some things but not on this.. I don't have many problems at all running EQ2 on two systems of very noticable quality. The graphics may not be that hot on the older system, but on the newer one they're wonderful and very pleasing. Every time I see an add, picture, ss or whatever from WoW, allI can see are pretty colors on low poly counts.
As for SWG, I think it's a pretty safe call to consider any and everything about it utter crap.

True about the fanbois.. but the WoW community is the worse MMORPG community I have seen in any game to date. Never seen that much crap ever in a single game.Xouqoa wrote:Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And I still feel that EQ2 graphics > WoW graphics by a long shot.

not because it requires better hardware.. but because it supports better hardware, stuff that hasn't come out yet, and will continue to run better and look better as time passes.noel wrote:I think expressing a preference in the graphics is personal preference only, but trying to make an argument that the engine is somehow better because it requires better hardware is inane.
better argument?
disclaimer: i havent logged into eq2 in over a week and i think about pickin up wow all the time, even tho time is what i have none of... because i think graphics aside, wow might be a better game... for an introvert soloer like myself.

Having played both games, I would personally say that both games have good engines. To my surprise, I think the EQ2 graphics engine is actually a good one - I honestly run EQ2 more smoothly than I did EQ1. That said, I like WoW's graphics ( the fantasy approach vs. realism or whatever you want to call EQ2's graphics ) far more than I do EQ2's.
Do unto others what has been done to you.
Haven't played WoW so I can't comment my professional opinion as a games coder is that the EQ2 client is a very sweet piece of software.
Whether or not you like the artwork as rendered by that software is a matter of taste of course. I like it fine.
I can respect the WoW cartoon look without any issues either. I'm not a slave to photorealism like most "3D connoisseurs" seem to be. It works. It's cohesive. It's colourful and cool. What's not to like? But this opinion is only formed from screenshots as I've ever seen it running.
That said, I played EQ1 so I was all ready versed in and intrigued by the lore of EQ2. I've never played any Warcraft games so the world/characters are a mystery to me and have no emotional resonance to draw to the that game over any other.

Graphics aside, hardware support aside, what makes a game better than another is how fun it is. I've played both and found EQ2 tedious after the initial "ooh something new and different" excitement wore off. The environment isn't as interesting or immersive either imo.
Edit: and don't forget de bugs!
