Codecs make Baby J cry

Ok, I'm pretty damned tired of video and audio codecs. Been watching Six Feet Under season 2 episodes, and just ran into one that uses a codec I don't have. Is there a way in media player or the divx player to find out exactly what codec has been used?

If it's an avi file then Gspot can tell you almost everything about the file.

Ok, well, it says its an XVid mpeg-4 codec, which I have, so I guess maybe it's a corrupted file :(

I cry tears of pain now.

videolan vlc player is really the best for random files off the net... give it a shot before ya delete that.

I like Zoomplayer. You can use all sorts of filters along with whatever codecs you want. It's the best one for power users but least friendly.

BSPlayer is a little more user friendly than Zoomplayer but is no where near as customizable. VLC player is ok as well but never seemed to have a skin that I liked and couldn't compete with Zoomplayer for options. It was the first player I found that handled OGM files for me though. Now just about all players do.

The best thing about all of this is that everyone one of these apps is free including Media Player classic if you decide to go with that one as well.

Don't forget to use Real alternative and Quicktime Alternative so you can get Real player and Quicktime off of your system...both are bloated pieces of shit.

The nVidia codecs (NV4) seem to be the best atm for DVD.
