According to a new FCC estimate obtained by Mediaweek, nearly all indecency complaints in 2003—99.8 percent—were filed by the Parents Television Council, an activist group.

You're not even what I'd call a conservative; I mean really, when's the last time you think Bush shaved his balls, let alone discussed his issues about it w/ his mates?

Sad thing is that this post of Rekaars actually made sense and was applicable.
However I think this group needs to be put on the ignore list at the FCC, and we should have a Special Investigator look into the cost to the US Government of processing their 220thousand plus frivolous claims.
Their motto is "because our children are watching" It SHOULD BE "Because we are too busy giving money to the PTL to watch our children"

Flamebait thread title aside (forgive me, I was bored), I'm suprised that the subject matter here isn't grabbing at least a little attention.
I'm just amazed by the fact that one tiny activist group is responsible for so many of the indecency complaints received by the FCC. Further, I'm dismayed by the fact that Michael Powell scares our congress people and senators into potential action by proclaiming that "public concern and outrage" is soaring by reporting the sensational rise in complaints (from 350 2001 to over 240,000 in 2003) without including the fact that virtually all of the complaints originate from an activist organization. The fact that he apparently did so out of ignorance is even worse. Numbers this year are already over 1 million complaints, although the Janet Jackson's Superbowl stunt introduces a statistical anomoly and is responsible for half of them.
The FCC has been cracking down on matters of decency recently, but they're doing so at the behest of a small number of zealots that have declared war on the likes of That 70's Show, CSI, Everwood and Will & Grace. There is no outpouring of concern or outrage from the masses over any of these shows. The outrage comes only from an organized, highly vocal group of activists intent to filter what we all see and hear through their own standard decency, but you won't hear that from Powell.

Christians are guilty in a lot of cases of messing up the message, and the perspective.

This is so true. When interpreting the words of Jesus, Christains forget to account for the male dominiated society at the time. "Love thy neighbor as thyself" is a command to give your neighbor a reach-around.Atokal wrote:All he did was die for mankind. Yep he was a pussy. As for the topic of the post, the real issue isn't that a single group is calling in all the complaints and therefor that group should be ignored. The spokesperson for the group is essentially correct in what she sais - that if people are breaking the law, it should not matter who is complaining about it. The real problem is that - assuming the group's claims are valid - why do we have laws in place that such a tiny minority care about? Iff all the complaints are coming in from only this one group, then its a good sign that it is well past the time for the FCC to change its regulations (or for Congress to change the laws, which ever is the source of the issue in this case).

Go to the PTC's web site and look at their "10 Worst" and look at some of the recent "action alert" items. They encourage their members to frivolously file FCC complaints because of *bleeped* words (during LIVE tv, not scripted stuff) that they find objectionable. They complain about what they perceive as implied obscenity. These are not violations, they're just instances of programming content that these people object to, and they're (IMO) abusing the FCC's complaint system to make their voices heard. I wouldn't see any issue at all with 1 or 100,000 people complaining if some TV character chanted the 7 forbidden words while sodomizing their naked uncle with a fire extinguisher during prime time family hour. Legitimate complaints about real violations are completely valid, and I'm sure that there are even some valid issues buried somewhere within the hundreds of thousands of complaints that these yahoos are generating, but they'll be lost amongst the frivilous complaints about *implied* sex between TV characters and bleeped out profanities.

I am actually curious if anyone knows if there is a time after which the networks can show whatever they like here (the US) as there is in the UK.Xatrei wrote:Go to the PTC's web site and look at their "10 Worst" and look at some of the recent "action alert" items. broadcast tv (nbc cbs abc etc.) have broadcasting standards set by the FCC. Cable tv can do whatever they want. However they limit themselves because people will complain to the providers and the providers can remove the channel, thus cutting the channel's reavenues.
Comedy Central plays completely uncut stuff once a week on saturday 1am. They have to do it like this because if they rock the boat too much people will start to complain in large numbers.
