Free Newsgroup Server

Post by Dups. »

So my ISP newsgroup server has decided to freaking cap the download speeds to something like 30k/s.

Does anyone know of a free newsgroup server that has high download speeds, not many broken posts, access to the good alt.binaries groups.

I assume it exists in a magical land. Hoping that maybe one of these server found their way into the real world somehow.

Doubt something like this exists. If it did it would be so swamped that your download speed would be pretty bad anyway.

Suck it up and spend the $15 a month for something like Agent News. If you're sucking binaries you're more than likely saving more than $15 a month in "evaluation" charges to begin with.

FYI:

Newsleecher is the best binary newsreader hands down. The developer is now working on version 2.0 which has "Supersearch". It's changed the way I use newsgroups.

Basically, Newsleecher indexes, within 15 minutes, every binary post to the newsgroups. You can then use Newsleecher (2.0) to search for whatever you want and the results come back in less than 5 seconds. It rocks so much I don't know what to say. No more wondering what newsgroup has posted the lastest movie, mp3 etc that you want. With all of the oddball binary groups it's easy to miss a post you're looking for. After you find what you want, you just select it like anything else and newsleecher downloads it from whatever you've setup as your newserver.

Try the latest 2.0 beta version, you'll like it. It will save you a ton of time and you can still search newsgroups the old fashioned way as well. Newsleecher has the best UI, best search functions, best options, best everything for your binary needs.

I'm paying 12.95$ for NewsHosting. I get 10 gigs per month and download at 300 K/s.

Do you have the option of cable (Cox)? As part of the normal monthly fees, you get free uncensored newsgroups, 40+GB down and 12GB up at 600K/s down and 60K up. They have 3 news servers that you can have 4 separate connections to each for a total of 12 binary sucking pipelines.

I've been downloading torrents of entire comic book series runs the past month. I'm sure I've uploaded at least 20GB and haven't heard anything from Cox regarding excessive use. I'm also sure I've exceeded 40GB downloads a few months as well. I downloaded 25GB in two days once and didnt hear a peep.

Cox Cable is the promised land for high bandwidth net geeks in the United States. I don't want to hear about those damn Swedes and their sick speeds!

I've finally had enough with Cox newsgroup incomplete posts and went with Giganews Unlimited for 24.99/month.

So far it's been excellent with 50 day retention and complete binaries. The four connections max out my available bandwidth (~500KB/sec) with ease almost always. I was wondering if I'd get my money's worth out of them until I read their online report for my usage:

Transfer (since 03/26/05)
Articles 13.94GB
Headers 0.11GB

Total 14.05GB

Next Rotation Date 04/26/05

Projected Usage 285.04GB
Last Update 03/27/05 03:01 CDT

I took a look at what the one day use primarily was used for:

~5.0GB Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (X-Box)
~4.8GB God of War (PS2)
~0.7GB Finding Neverland (movie)
~2.0GB Sideways (movie)
~0.15GB MP3's, etc.

Is 24.99 for unlimited downloads worth it? I'd say yes if you download DVD or CD images to test. If you just download the occasional movie and MP3's than you might get by with the 11.99/month for 10GB.

Note: As with any media downloading, support the industry and buy music, movies, books, etc...but if you have a budget of 50-200.00 per month to spend on entertainment, supplementing that budget is a judgment call that only each individual can make. Beyond that, it also has its uses for trying something before you buy (50.00 for games is a lot for anyone) and watching something you'd never buy otherwise without seeing it first which you end up buying. (actually promotes sales) I'm not here to justify though so eat shit if you're anal about these things.

Some other comments about Giganews:

-Headers download extremely fast. (not sure if this is a problem anywhere else but with Cox, they were slow a molasses even though the actual articles downloaded fast)

-Retention and completeness has been almost perfect back 50 days. I've seen just a handful of files incomplete which were easily taken care of with one or two Par2 files.

-If you decide to be a heavy user of usenet for downloading binaries, for the love of god, get Newsleecher with Super Search. Newsleecher-SuperSearch indexes a full 50 days of binary articles and allows you to search all binary newsgroups for keywords with additional filters if necessary. It's as close to an instant response to inquiries as you can get (less than 5 seconds) and displays a maximum of 5000 responses. You can then select and download directly from the responses which then accesses your newserver to retrieve them. Beyond that huge timesaver of not needing to download individual group headers, the program itself is far and beyond the best binary app out there for ease of use and functionality. (BNR2 is nice but not user friendly and no supersearch)

PS: After downloading all these files, Copernic works great for finding them fast on your hard drives! : )

For binaries, it's no contest. Newsleecher is strictly for binaries though so if you need to read text posts (beyond the occasional "re:" or .nfo post, you need something like Agent.

The Newsleecher developer is also extremely active and puts out a new beta every week or two. He just completely recoded the way the databases are managed to increase the speed even more. With agent, you might get a new beta once every two years.

Whenever you switch from something you're used to, it takes a good one or two days to familiarize yourself with the functions of the new app. Newsleecher is a powerful app with advanced user capability which is also simple to use for those not in need of the extra stuff. I love it's Leech, Leech First, Leech Specify, etc options for organizing and prioritizing downloads on the fly, excellent filters, UI, speed, reliability/stability, etc.
