Price of Thanksgiving dinner

Post by Chmee »

Interesting look at how the estimated price of a thanksgiving dinner has fallen in real terms since 1986

http://divisionoflabour.com/archives/000333.php
According to the American Farm Bureau's annual estimate of the price of a Thanksgiving Dinner, this year's feast will be 60 cents cheaper than last year's.

The table below gives AFB's figures since 1986 along with my calculations for the real Thanksgiving Dinner Price. Although the nominal price has increased by almost $7, the inflation-adjusted price is over $14 cheaper (in 2004 $) than it was in 1986.

Year Nominal Real (2004 $)
1986 $28.74 $49.74
1987 $24.51 $40.58
1988 $26.61 $42.26
1989 $24.70 $37.54
1990 $28.85 $41.25
1991 $25.95 $36.05
1992 $26.39 $35.53
1993 $27.49 $36.02
1994 $28.40 $36.26
1995 $29.40 $36.52
1996 $31.66 $38.18
1997 $31.75 $37.51
1998 $33.09 $38.52
1999 $33.83 $38.40
2000 $32.37 $35.51
2001 $35.04 $37.64
2002 $34.56 $36.39
2003 $36.28 $37.44
2004 $35.68 $35.68

I paid $20 for my traditional Thanksgiving eats this year. So much for that home cooked meal.

The price is even cheaper if you refuse to celebrate the domination of native Americans by way of the ritual slaughter of turkeys. :)

I bet you are the life of the party when you go eat your veggie burgers.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

And in which book of the capitalism bible would you find farm subsidies?

Save $17 off thanksgiving here, pay $437 in subsidies there.. (source)

I do miss cheap turkey though.. not a popular meat here. :(
