Nintendo DS, or Playstation PSP?

Post by Funkmasterr »

I was just wondering which one people are going for. I messed around with the DS today a bit in circuit city and played metroid on it, and it was very cool. The only problem I think I see with the ds is that nintendo doesnt have as many good titles as playstation. But I havent got to mess with the PSP at all yet. Just looking for opinions :)

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

How about none of the above.

Don't we all have enough platforms to game on? If you need something to do while taking the bus or flying, just get a book.

I think the PSP will have the ability to play music and movies also, but not sure. If so, that's what I would get.

Are the graphics on the DS upgraded any from the GBA, or the same?

No sources or anything, just recalling from what I read in the various gaming magazines, but:

The DS has similar graphic capabilities as the N64 did, but the two screens have a higher resolution and crisper look than any TV would have given the N64.

I'm not likely to buy either, to stay on topic. Too expensive for something I wouldn't get much use out of. The only traveling I do is when I drive myself, which makes gaming on a portable machine kind of dangerous!

That's not really a fair assesment since Sony has never put one out, imo. GBA was very nice, yes. But what competition did it have? None.

Well, first off the graphics on the ds were very nice, I would definately say better than N64 graphics. The touch screen function is pretty nice as well.

Here is the issue, Nintendo will have metroid which is a lot of fun, a mario kart game, zelda maybe, and a few others. But I think the PSP will have better games. From what I understand, they both have the wireless internet capabillity ( I know for sure the ds does) which is also pretty cool. The ds also seemed to double as somewhat of a palm pilot, with schedueling and messaging programs and such.

Still have to put some thought into it. $150 is not really that bad though for what you get.

every time nintendo had a competitor in the handhelds, nintendo had weaker technology, but they still prevailed

If you saw the pictures of the DS VS PSP versions of Ridge Racer you'd shit yourself over how shitty the DS graphics really are. PSP graphics are so far ahead of DS its sad.

PSP for me thx.

I'll still content that they have never had another serious competitor in the handheld market. We're just now seeing Sony's first entry. Atari had one I think a long time ago but I don't think it ever was very popular. Did NeoGeo or Sega ever put out one? If they did, I don't remember.

The only handheld's I have ever had have been Nintendo, but it's more because that's all that was available more than anything. I do <3 my GameCube though.

Sony had never put out a console till the Playstation either, and look how it dominated the market the second it hit. N64 wha?

Sonys bout to put the nail in Nintendos coffin. They've already killed nintendo's console market and now they're gonna finish the job. About time really, nintendo needs to go the way of sega and start doing 3rd party games. Zelda/Metroid on PS2(3)/Xbox(2) pls!

I'm gonna get both. DS will have quirky fun games on it. PSP will have console-style stuff. Problem with the PSP is battery life, though, cos it's so powerful. I hear rumours of as little as 1.5-2 hours play on a full charge if the game thrapes all the processors, has lots of disc access and uses the wireless network.
Anyway, anyone who buys a PSP go and buy this on launch day:

It's great ;)

1.5-2 was a rumor gone bad. I think sony has talked about a 4 hour battery life.

Sega had Game gear, It was far better than the gameboy but had shit for games because it was sega. In the end the 8-bit black and white gameboy kicked the 16bit color game gear ass.

Since I'm hopping on trains all of the time, I have a few portable titles. Ease of use and simplicity of the games tend to make the best portable experience from my perspective. I play sports titles nearly exclusively on the consoles but I would never consider an involved sports title for a portable. Gotta change trains, only so much time in the can, etc etc.

I like the DS. Traditional games will not compare to the psp's in most cases but there is all kinds of wacky shit you can do on the thing. Between the touch screen and the microphone alone, there's potential for new types of games nobody has ever even considered. In addition, the screen and backlighting for GBA games look far far better than on the SP with it's washed out backlight

Further, it's only $150. Not sure what the psp will sell for, but I wouldn't consider a $250+ price tag condusive to having people standing on line at midnight.

I would think you'd want to get feedback from someone who's developing for at least one system(or both) while being courted by the other.

I don't know, the quirkiness of the DS may give inroads to smaller dev companies with really innovative ideas in leiu of going against a system that will be selling their bulk under huge monikers such as EA. While there's no real predicting what will ultimately happen between these two systems because they are really different trends that have existed for the last 15 years, attachment rates have historically been very small on portable systems. Being overshadowed by huge devs could make even the smallest project seem like a waste of money and time.

My understanding is that the Sega handheld was not serious competition to the gameboy due to its size and battery life. I think sony handheld will have similiar problems. But due to the cult like following of the craptacular playstation family I think it will do alright.

Also something nintendo should advertise is that for a $30 upgrade and a compact flash card (price depends on how much memory you want) you can play MP3s and video on the DS. And thats anything you can download from your computer, not some crap were you have to repurchase all your DVDs in a special format.

Overall I think the DS is a much better bargain for your money and has better games. Those of you saying playstation has better games, what games are you thinking of? I can't think of one playstation exclusive release that beats out the mario library, sonic, metriod etc.

It's more of a matter of the fact that PS2 has about 500 games out for it now, and Gamecube has like 150. These are just figurative numbers to make a point. But that has always been nintendo's week point is that they have their core games that will always sell well no matter what because of the fans (zelda, metroid, mario), but then they have very few other game releases, and most of them are weak.

Another point on top of that is a game could come out across all three platforms and people a lot of times end up getting it on either xbox or ps2. A lot of this has to do with nintendos lack of online capability, which the DS will expand on, so that will be interesting to see how Nintendo does with that for the first time.

Don't get me wrong, I own a gamecube and a PS2, I just don't want to get a DS, get a kick ass Metroid and zelda and mario game, and then have it kind of fall off. One can hope that they will get Final Fantasy game for it, but who knows.

I don't know how the PSP is supposed to work as far as movies and such being played on it, but the last I checked (it's been 6 months probably) the best you could do for a compact flash card was like 1 gig. This brings a couple of problems up; To get a memory card that size would cost damn near as much as the DS itself, and you can't fit a whole movie into 1 gig.

I don't know, honetsly I will more than likely end up getting both, I would just like to get a few more details on the PSP.

I dont know about you, but I would rather have 20 really quality games, than 200 shitty games and 2 quality. Quality > Quantity.

I do agree that Nintendo really needs to work with their online compatitibilty on their next console system, but from what thay are doing with the DS it looks like they are going in that direction.

From what I have read about the PSP, you will have to purchase special mini dvds to play on it. So if you want to play a DVD on your home player and your PSP, you will have to buy it twice. Most likely at $20 each.

With a little compression (you wont even be able to tell on the small screen) you can probably fit 2 movies on a 1GB flash card, and they have gone down in price a bit.

2 GB Compact Flash Card for 129.99

1GB Flash Card for 67.49

Pretty cheap when you consider having to purchase mini DVDs for a premium and the price difference between PSP and DS.

I think what it comes down to is Nintendo doesnt own any DVD titles and wont make money off of selling the movies twice...

Edit: One more point I think people arent paying enough attention to is at best PSP will have a 4 hour battery life, which is total crap. I hope all PSP purchasers are prepared to carry a 4 pack of AA's around with them at all times, and pray that your game is at a point you can save when the battery fails (every 4 hours).

The worst rumour I heard was 15mins. With WiFi and lots of disc access I think we will see some titles with ~2hour battery life.
Unfortunately I only have access to a battery life emulator at the moment so it's hard to give any concrete figures.

Pulling the "Quality > Quantity" card is bunk. Nintendo has claimed that since the N64 and we all know its bullshit. Nintendo is the only company still making quality games for their system, everyone else is jumping ship.

Well, I guess Nintendo has another 48 shitty games to make.

Seriously, from a home console standpoint, Nintendo just doesn't have that stranglehold of quality you think it does. In fact, it's not even close any longer. PS2 has a boatload of wicked titles coming out just this holiday season which does nothing but even further seperate the vast differential of quality titles between them and the cube.

This was about the DS and PSP. Currently, that's an entirely different ballgame.

DS has backwards compatibility with both GB and GBA games. Of course I'm buying DS, it's a no-brainer. I believe the majority of players that own a GBA will do the same. Backwards compatibility was also the reason I chose PS2 over the other platforms :P

Actually, I had emulators for most every system on my xbox without ever opening the case. The only reason you need to open it is if you want to put a bigger hard drive in it, which is definitely not necessary, or to install a mod chip, which I still have not done and can do everything that anyone else here has done.

Softmodding is too easy.

Some dude released 3 DVDs crammed packed full of emulators/games for the XBox with a nice UI to access them all. One DVD was all SNES games, one had 46,000 games from about 16 different old game consoles like atarti2600, coleco, intellivision etc, and one had a bazillion handheld games on it. The series is called BAED (Big Ass Emulator Disk) They were posted on the newsgroups and they rock.

As for the handheld people here. Chidoro is the only poster above age 18 that I see having a legit reason for a handheld game system. What is it that you other people do that gives you the time to play a handheld...what I mean by that is I drive to work, surf the net, drive home and then have my home entertainment system available to use. Where are you finding the time to use a handheld game thingy? Chidoro's train trips made sense as he's not driving. Out of curiousity, what time or situtuation do you use a handheld game system mosty?

I bought the GBA for some of the titles I wanted to play that did not come out on gamecube. I have a GB player for my gamecube so sometimes if I am home and play it, I just hook it into that and play the game on my tv. And it is nice for when im on a road trip with someone, which I do fairly often as well.
