<3 Canadian Politics

Post by Dregor Thule »

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A Canadian legislator with a history of insulting U.S. President George W. Bush has gone on television to deliver her latest protest, taking a cameo role in a satirical sketch less than two weeks before Bush is to pay an official visit to Canada.

Carolyn Parrish, a member of Prime Minister Paul Martin's governing Liberal Party, stomped on a George Bush doll with her heel in the CBC television show, "This Hour Has 22 Minutes", filmed on Tuesday. The episode aired on Wednesday.

Martin has declared Parrish's previous remarks against Bush to be unacceptable but has repeatedly refused demands that she be turfed from the Liberal caucus.

"He should get rid of her. I think people have an obligation to be mature and talk responsibly," Conservative Member of Parliament Monte Solberg told reporters.

The head of the Liberal caucus, Andy Savoy, said he did not favor her expulsion.

But a Liberal legislator from the Ontario border city of Sarnia, Roger Gallaway, denounced Parrish's move as bizarre and stupid.

"It's a pathetic spectacle that someone would behave in this fashion," Gallaway said, adding: "It's rotten timing."

Bush, who has had an uneasy relationship with the Canadian government and was miffed by Ottawa's opposition to the war in Iraq, is paying his first bilateral visit to Canada on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

Parrish said earlier this month that the president was "war-like" and she was dumbfounded by his re-election. In August she described supporters of the U.S. missile defense program as a "coalition of the idiots", and last year she exclaimed: "Damn Americans...I hate those bastards."

Bush is not popular in Canada, nor are many of his administration's policies. Members of Martin's own cabinet had expressed their preference for Bush's electoral rival, Democrat John Kerry, though none used the same sort of language employed by Parrish.
Beautiful. She truly is representing her ridings feelings!

I hope you are kidding Dregor. A talk show here in Toronto asked that very question. The overwhelming response was she does not represent her ridings feelings. Bush is in power, the USA is our greatest trading partner, what fucking purpose does this serve.

Further as a member of the "Lieberal" party she should focus her antics on her own parties miserable record before going after the American President. Read Adscam.

Also previously she referred to Americans as Bastards. She is a fucking blemish on a pimple on the ass of the government.

Last I checked, there's a strong anti-Bush sentiment in Canada. Very strong. Having said that, Canada is still very pro-U.S. on the whole, just down on the current government. So it's hard to defend her statements like "Damn Americans" as representative of her riding.

Beyond this I do not give a damn if she lives or dies, I do know she has more in common with Bush than I do.

Yes, the "American idiots" comment was the only one that didn't work for me. It's far too vague, needed to be defined a little more. "51% of Americans are idiots" is probably a little more on the money. As for her dismissal from the caucas, Martin finally got the balls to do it? Took him long enough, and many an insult towards Bush.

And yes, I think she represents her riding. Hell, they re-elected her after she made most of those comments.

From reading about this lady a bit, she needs to grow up, or change her meds. Sounds like a nut to me. Would she be a PETA member by any chance?

She was fired for her method of presentation, not her viewpoints.

Carolyn Parrish is a stunned cunt. She's an idiot. The people that elected her are fucking morons. The same applies to Jean "fuck you all but Ontario and Quebec" Chretien.

Whether some Canadians like it or not, the United States is:

1) Our largest trading partner
2) Our next door neighbour
3) An ally in the past 100 years or so
4) Larger and more powerful than us, economically and politically, as well as militarily

I put those in order of significance.

Our government may not always like what other governments do, but they should not deliberately antagonize someone who it is in your best interests to stay friends with, or at least on speaking terms. Sure, we don't like the American policies in some areas but you keep it to civil discourse and constructive criticism. Instances like Parrish's comments or Chretien's beloved press secretary calling Bush a moron are not constructive: they are insults and they damage OUR credibilty when we revert to them, because they don't address issues, they're just empty antagonistic rhetoric.

George Bush isn't my favorite American President either, but he is the president of the UNITED STATES, not Canada: he represents the will of the American people not the Canadian, so what gives us the right to insult their process? We don't have to like him, we have to be professional and work with him... or we can be like Chretien and antagonize him so that our concerns on issues like softwood lumber, and beef exports remain unanswered.

I am glad Martin finally grew a pair and turfed her ass.

wtf? I certainly think think he was better than Bush but I'd think the same if you put a corpse in office. I ragged on Clinton on these (ign) boards enough times, especially over bombing Iraq to distract from his blowjob woes. I did think the whole impeachment thing was dumb, and very beneath you, but I gave americans too much credit prior to this election.
