Janitor dies at 102, leaving $2.3 million to college where he worked

(11/16/04 - GREAT FALLS, MT) — A part-time janitor who worked at the University of Great Falls has left the college $2.3 million -- the largest gift the school has ever received.

Genesio Morlacci died on Halloween at the age of 102.

On Monday, university president Eugene McAllister announced Morlacci's generous bequest.

"This is the largest single gift ever received by the university," McAllister said. "Students on this campus will benefit from every hour of the 18-hour days he worked."

Morlacci, a former dry cleaner, owned Sun Cleaners for several years before selling his business and going to work as a janitor at UGF.

"He only had a third-grade education, but he knew his numbers," said Morlacci's longtime friend Bill Foy. "He wasn't afraid to work hard."

Morlacci and his late wife always lived frugally, Foy said. "He patched the patches on his pants and turned the collars on his shirts."

A native of Italy, Morlacci directed that 95 percent of the money go to scholarships. The university can choose how to spend the remainder

I wouldn't say he lived for the school and the students just because he worked there when he didnt have to. There are some folks old enough to remember the Depression who refuse to part with a penny more than they have to and certainly don't aspire to be anything more that what they are. They stockpile their money for no real reason. Lots of old folks were raised not to be self-indulgent and to see a day's work as their duty. Much different from our generation(s).

Yeah this really reminds me of my grandparents and how they were raised in the great depression. My grandparents are in their 80's and have saved well over a million dollars, but still conserve every penny they can. They only use half a paper towel to dry their hands (I usually take two), buy anything that's on sale (even if it means buying a gross kind of food no one likes), and still even haggle people at garage sales down to the lowest possible price. My grandad worked in the parts department at a car dealership until very recently when he finally had to quit...it kills him that he can't work anymore.

My mother's uncle lived in a small cabin without electricity. He chopped his own firewood and carried his own water. No I am not kidding, he did this until he died. Didn't even have a car, he had an old moped he rode around on. The only money he ever spent was on a local soccer club (amateur club) who benefited quite a bit from him. When he finally died he left a huge amount of money to spread around the family,

that's so funny lalanae, if you hadn't mentioned that i never would've made the connection. but you're absolutely right, my grandma on my father's side is the same way. she's by no means a millionaire, but she's well into her 70's, still works at her vfw and can pinch a penny like nobody's business. there's also a sweet old guy who's retirement age and deals craps with truant. he owns like half a dozen homes, collects rent from tenants every month, but still works full time.

i suppose if this man didn't have any family to leave the money to, financing some kids' educations is a great idea.

My maternal and paternal grandparents all grew up during the depression era in rural Nebraska farming communities where conditions were made even worse by the "Dust Bowl" draughts. All of them are / were (only my maternal grandparents are still with us) extremely hard working, frugal people. They spend no more than they have to. They conserve every penny for lean times should they ever come again, and, for working class people, they've amassed a considerable nest egg by doing so. Not a crumb from any meal is ever left on a plate. No food is ever thrown away, and nothing goes to waste in their home. Reusing what most of us consider to be disposable items I'm sure is a common trait among people of that generation.

I often think their behavior is strange and sometimes embarrassing, but then I have to remind myself how different their outlook on things is from my own. The hardships that the people of this generation endured during their youth, and followed by the sacrifices made, in one way or another, by virtually all of them during the war years that followed, instilled into them values that still dominate their behavior over half a century later. It's something with which most of us can't even identify, having not gone through the same ordeals.

They really are remarkable people (all of them, not just my grandparents).

And aye, I think everyone must have a grandparent or someone they know who still spends like is the Great Depression. My grandmother turns off the heat and the water when shes not using it(she lives in MN), she makes underwear out of old shirts, won't pay for a 50 cent screw, changes her own oil still, and to finish an endless list, she also picks up smashed pumpkins from halloween and makes pumpkin pie with the remains. . Now her husband died over twenty years ago, but he has an inventor for 3M and even invented the squirrel-proof birdfeeder, so I know that she is doing more than fine. And she knows she is doing fine, but she says that once you go through a Depression you will never get out of your old habits.
