How lazy do you have to be..

To hunt over the internet? No wonder Houston is the second fattest city in the U.S. and was number one the previous three years. With Texas also having Dallas, San Antonio, Forth Worth and Arlington in the top 10.

Internet hunting idea has wildlife officials up in arms

HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) -- Hunters soon may be able to sit at their computers and blast away at animals on a Texas ranch via the Internet, a prospect that has state wildlife officials up in arms.

The Web site already offers target practice with a .22 caliber rifle and could soon let hunters shoot at deer, antelope and wild pigs, site creator John Underwood said on Tuesday.

Texas officials are not quite sure what to make of Underwood's Web site, but may tweak existing laws to make sure Internet hunting does not get out of hand.

"This is the first one I've seen," said Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wildlife director Mike Berger. "The current state statutes don't cover this sort of thing."

Underwood, an estimator for a San Antonio, Texas auto body shop, has invested $10,000 to build a platform for a rifle and camera that can be remotely aimed on his 330-acre (133-hectare) southwest Texas ranch by anyone on the Internet anywhere in the world.

The idea came last year while viewing another Web site on which cameras posted in the wild are used to snap photos of animals.

"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that.' A little light bulb went off in my head," he said.

Internet hunting could be popular with disabled hunters unable to get out in the woods or distant hunters who cannot afford a trip to Texas, Underwood said.

Berger said state law only covers "regulated animals" such as native deer and birds and cannot prevent Underwood from offering Internet hunts of "unregulated" animals such as non-native deer that many ranchers have imported and wild pigs.

He has proposed a rule that will come up for public discussion in January that anyone hunting animals covered by state law must be physically on site when they shoot.

Berger expressed reservations about remote control hunting, but noted that humans have always adopted new technologies to hunt.

"First it was rocks and clubs, then we sharpened it and put it on a stick. Then there was the bow and arrow, black powder, smokeless power and optics," Berger said. "Maybe this is the next technological step out there."

Underwood, 39, said he will offer animal hunting as soon as he gets a fast Internet connection to his remote ranch that will enable hunters to aim the rifle quickly at passing animals.

He said an attendant would retrieve shot animals for the shooters, who could have the heads preserved by a taxidermist. They could also have the meat processed and shipped home, or donated to animal orphanages.

Hmmm. What's to stop internet retards from just sitting down and shooting just about anything that gets in the frame?

I sincerely hope that noone ever goes for a nature walk through this guy's land.

If they can do it for hunting, and they've already done it for the military, this kind of thing comming in for local police forces should be in the neaar future if it isn't already here.

Houston is the fattest city last time I checked, and not because of any kind of laziness, but because Houstonians eat out more than any city in North America (another statistical fact).

Besides, I don't see much difference between Internet hunting and say....EQ, except you get real life "loot." I wouldn't call anyone "lazy" for doing it unless you are prepared to call all your fellow gamers lazy.

According to a CNN survey, Detroit is the fattest city followed by Houston.

The only reason I mention Texas is that in a state where we have such an overweight problem, we probably shouldn't be thinking of ways to keep people from getting off their butts.

As far as the analogy goes I think it's a bit flawed, I don't think people play EQ in lieu of doing LARP. I think if I'm a hunter and I don't want to put in the effort of actually hunting outdoors, then I would be lazy. That being said I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but it's still being lazy.

Well Houston was the fattest city for the last 3 years. Glad to know Detroit passed us up this year. :?

Lots of folks may not have the means to go hunting on a whim. Whether it be disability, time (you may have an hour or two to spare but not a whole weekend), location (some people may not be near a hunting ground), or maybe even money (Not sure how much this "service" costs, but hunting equipment can be expensive, expecially for someone who just wants to try it casually), I think there are lots of reasons people would find this service attractive, not just because they are lazy. It's easily-accessible fun (for those who find hunting fun).

this gives me a great idea. I'm going to put a webcam on my head and a laptop on my back, set up a service where i hit a golf ball in response to mouseclicks. You'll be able to play some of the best courses in the world, for the simple cost of the greens fees. You don't have to pay to travel there, i'll do that for you.

of course i suck at golf, but i can fix that.

I guess I was just spoiled growing up in south Texas and I concede that there are many special cases, such as disabled hunters that would benefit from this service. As I said I don't think there is anything wrong with the service and I'm not implying that people who choose to use the service are overall lazy people just that in this situation in regards to hunting they are.

As an example, I don't work out as much as I would like, why? Well I have a fairly busy schedule, but I do make time for things like playing games and such, does this make me a lazy person? I could make time for working out, but I choose not to so in regards to working out I am a lazy person.

In any case I think we can agree to disagree on this subject and celebrate that at least we no longer have the fattest city in the country!

Just because it's based in TX doesn't mean it's geared specifically to Texans. So mentioning Houston as the fattest city in your original post isn't really relevant.

There are many other reasons to attack this idea as being retarded. I'm talking Jerry Falwell retarded at that.
