I saw this link on Wonkette today. It'll never happen, but it's nice to think about just to let off steam.

I don't know about the rest of the petition, but I'm pretty sure this is bullshit. CA's energy trouble had to do with extremely poor foresight of it's state government AND the people of CA that continuously rejected referendum's (over several decades) on increased energy bills in order to maintain existing sources/equipment as well as preparing for higher and higher demand. When California was devasted by an energy crisis artificially created by hostile forces in other states, the federal government did nothing to protect her and actively held California's hands by her side so she could not defend herself from her attackers.
As far as holding her hands to her sides, that was to protect other states from being forced to sell their excess supply at below market value and thereby hurting everyone else. I shouldn't have to pay higher energy bills because CA doesn't know how to manage itself.

It's only a matter of time before unions like Canada an the US break apart. There's already rumblings in 2 provinces up here and I'm sure that there is more than 1 state down there with is miscontent with the way some things are run.
Will this happen in our lifetime? Probably not. Our grandchildren and great grandchildren may live to see it though.

Which two provinces? I am sort of out of the loop now on what's happening to the north. Is it safe to assume Quebec is still in that mix?Animalor wrote:It's only a matter of time before unions like Canada an the US break apart. I remember watching one Quebec vote results live (perhaps 10 years ago). It was amazing how close they came to vote to seperate themselves from Canada (hovered just over 50% all night).

Alberta is pissed off at the federal and there is a movement there to seperate. Although nowhere near as large and well-publicised as the Quebec one, it is present.Ogbar wrote:Which two provinces? California's energy crisis was caused by greedy energy companies after the state of California chose not to regulate the industry any longer. The energy companies will claim to be going broke but in actuality they are gouging the public in order to pay out bonuses to their employees. At the height of the energy crisis, one of the electric companies paid several hundred million dollars in bonuses to its employees. I worked for an electric company here in Wisconsin. It is still regulated here. During the late 90s boom when everyone had cash flowing out of their ass, instead of lowering rates, the company gave out huge bonuses to everyone. I got an 11% of salary bonus one year. They did it so that they would not have to lower rates and needed to spend the money somehow.
As for seceding, it will never happen. The states don't have the individual influence that they once did.

The west coast east coast rap war finally hits canada by storm!Dregor Thule wrote:If I had to hazard a guess, Quebec and BC. Quebec for sure, the seperatists there live with some serious fucking blinders on. BC, just a guess, I really don't know of a 2nd province with "rumblings" to leave Canada, but I know there's a big west vs. Ontario/east coast sentiment out there.

The east coast states need to combine into one New Zergia state like the Euros did to battle California.
On the subject, I believe that California produces more rice than China.

The california energy crisis had several reasons behind it, the largest though was the poor regulatory structure. Yes, I know they said that it was deregulated, but there were still regulations in place, and they were a problem. The biggest problem were the electricity companies bought power on a daily spot market but the price that they sold to consumers at was capped. So there was no feedback to the end consumer when prices spiked to adjust usage rates. The electricity companies could also not enter into any longer term contracts to even out their risk exposure, they had to buy day to day on the spot market. Also regulatory requirements and a fair amount of nimbyism had held up production of new power plants for a while, leaving the generation capacity tight. Add in some high natural gas prices and yes, some companies gaming the silly setup and you got the crisis.
