very interesting...looks like this research could possibly lead to a better understanding of pure hardware and/or software neural networks as well. I'm anxious to learn more about this.

That and the chance of uncovering the causes of neural dysfunctions and possible treatments.

But to be able to actually maneuver a virtual jet fighter with it in the stage it is and have communications going back and forth from neurons to hardware interface is just amazing to me.

Neural nets and "positronic brains" allowing more human-like behavior from robots would really be cool.

I vaguely remember reading a book about creating human-like responses but the premise was also that robots wouldn't necessarily look human. I believe the book was "The Turing Effect" and the primary robot in that one had psuedo-tentacles or "appendage bundles" that it could manipulate through nanotechnology. I'm not sure I have a point here other than this article made me think of that book:)

what it really shows you is how amazing mammalian cortical neurons are.

a key phrase in there is "emergent property".

there is something about the way that groups of cortical neurons working together that creates a system that is greater than the sum of its parts.

but you even see this in non cortical networks. A lot of the background research in some of this has been done in the brain of the locust by Giles Laurent at Cal Tech - and many other people like him - but specifically how odors are discriminated, and sets up a timing rhythm that allows for individual neurons to carrry much more information by not only firing, but adding information by when in the rhythm they fire.

Haha.. so true - but it's really anything that will make our lives better in the long run that he'll put a stop to.

That's the Matrix I was talking about. VR, bitches, VR. Someday soon, people will be getting datajacks installed into their heads, and I shall be one of those.

I would enjoy a simple 4-function calculator implanted in my head so I'd never screw up base math in my day to day work.
