God help us, but I beleive by the time my grandchildren grow up we'll have alternitive fuel sources available. In the meantime, opening up protected reserves to cut down on costs now so we can afford to do that research could well be a necessity.

I'm sure our grandparents are\would be surprised we aren't flying around in personal aircraft, colonizing the galaxy and being served by our personal robot slaves.

Unlike in my grandparents time, we already have cars that are being powered by electricity, soloar power, and hybrid fuel / electricity engines.

I'm thinking the odds on this are a bit better than thinking the 2000's would bring about the Era of the Jetsons.

edit: I would like to further add the comment that oil is not a replenishable resource, and we've been sucking it down our greedy little gullets for a very, very long time now. The dwindling of the world oil supply will force these changes to be made before the entire world either grinds to a stop or becomes embroiled in a resource war.

Environmental issues involve a lot more than your incredibly simplistic example.

I could go on for paragraphs and pages showing examples and initiatives that have been implemented and persued by the Bush administration that directly undermine much of the existing environemental protection laws.

That shit DIRECTLY influences Canada.
I don't give a fuck if your government gives industry free reign to dump toxic shit in your rivers and lakes but when it influences my country, I have every right to get pissed off and voice my opinion.

If industry in NY dumps toxic waste in the Niagara River or Lake Ontario it affects my quality of life. Your country is polluting another country's water supply with no repurcussions.

Your aquifers in the midwest are so contaminated from waste from industry free from the constraints of responsible waste management that you may have to divert water from the Great Lakes.... that affects Canada and all of North American. And your shithead president has flip/floped on allowing/disallowing it a number of times. I can only assume that if he gets a second term he will pander to his big business buddies and allow the degradation of this continent's most important environmental landmarks. Diverting the great lakes would be as irresponsible as leveling the rocky mountains.

Your country is so fucked up on environmental issues that your president allows companies to take other countries garbage and bury it in your soil. Do you know how many hundreds of tousands of tonnes of Canadian garbage you have buried beneath your feet? But I guess if Dubya says it's ok, we will continue to shovel you our shit. It's cheaper for us to ship our garbage to you than to deal with ourselves.
