WEST PALM BEACH -- A public test of Palm Beach County's electronic voting machines was postponed because a computer server crashed.

Elections Supervisor Theresa LePore said a power failure during Hurricane Jeanne caused temperatures in the building to rise, which may have damaged the computer

The computer failure won't affect the function of the machines during the Nov. 2 presidential election, she said. Even if one of the file servers goes down on election night, LePore said the votes cast on the electronic machines won't be lost and the office would use a backup server.

State law requires that a portion of the touch-screen voting machines be tested publicly before an election to ensure they work properly.

``This is very troublesome, that less than three weeks away from a presidential election we have problems with these machines,'' said Lale Mamaux, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Delray Beach, a critic of electronic voting. ``Let's hope that on Friday, she's able to run the test.''

LePore, who was defeated in the Aug. 31 primary, is a defendant in a suit filed by Wexler claiming touch-screen voting machines are unconstitutional because they don't allow manual recounts in close elections.

So the power was out a couple weeks ago...and the server crashed today...

well the good news is that there is a paper trail and in the event of an equipment failure in 20 days we have some ....sort....of....paper trail....

ah....maybe that is why Jeb Bush encouraged Republicans to vote via absentee ballot, and at the same time said there was nothing wrong with the voting machines....

If the Floridians weren't so retarded or better yet, the spin doctors didn't create the image in the media that this was somehow different than any other allowable margin of human fuckupability, then they wouldn't have to worry about the electronic machines.

well as somebody who voted in Florida in 2000, i'm just not sure why all counties use the same one we used in St. John's Co.

It was an optical scan device but had big easy boxes to mark your vote in. You used a Sharpie(tm!!) so that there was no issue of lead breaking or whatever. My county was full of old people too, and they seemed to have no problem.

I did read an article today about how the hurricanes could hurt the Republicans in Florida. Apparently the hardest hit areas are more Republican in nature, and the residents there are saying the elections aren't exactly high on the priority list when they have to worry about things like having no home anymore. I'm sure the pussy Liberals created the hurricans with some cold war-era Soviet Hurikanski machine and directed them at the Republican Floridians as a scare tactic tho.
