Re-applying service packs

Post by Dups. »

Ok , In my M$ book it says

In earlier versions of Windows, if you applied a service pack to your computer, each time you changed the system state by adding or removing services, you had to reapply any service packs. Windows 2000 automatically recognizes that a service pack has been applied to the system and which files have been replaced or updated. Whenever you add or remove services from a computer running Windows 2000, the system copies the required files from either the Windows 2000 instllation files or from the service pack install location, so you don't have to reapply the service pack.
Then I start reading about slipstreaming service packs.
In Windows 2000 Professional, slipstreaming avoids the administrative overhead of service pack reapplication. Slipstreaming allows you to apply a service pack update to the source files in the Windows 2000 Professional distribution point. When the distribution point is the source for an installation of Windows 2000 Professional, the new installation contains the service pack. Any services or drivers added to the local installation come from the distribution point, thus avoiding the need to reapply the service pack
Now , why would they have to put the sentence I have in bold? I thought Windows 2000 did not need for you to reapply a service pack when you add a component after the service pack was installed. Regardless of having or not having slipstreamed service packs to a distribution folder?
I have no sense of decency. This way , all my other senses are enhanced!

If I'm reading that right, and I'd like to think I am, the second passage is specific to applying service packs to distribution shares. It's saying if you apply the SP to a distribution, you don't have to apply the SP once the PC is installed. That said, as far as I know with 2k3 and XP, you no longer need to reapply SPs.

I would defer to Adelrune, or others as I've been out of the systems game for some time, and my focus is primarily networking.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
