World Series of Poker
Sunday I'll be playing for a seat in the 2005 World Series of Poker.
The tourni Im playing in started last weekend. Ive already gotten farther than over 1350 people. Come sunday, only 150 people will remain. I dont have any delusions that I'll actually win the thing, but god damn its fun as hell!
For anyone thats been drawn to Hold'Em over the past few years, I strongly suggest you find some tournaments to play in. And not internet tournis. They dont compare to sitting in a room full of people, hearing shouts of joy and groans of agony. Having someone stare you down when you push All-In puts the game at an entirely different level.
Sundays the big day for me now. Can I beat 149 more people?
Wish me luck!

well, I did beat 149 more people. But the final field was larger than expected. Instead of the 150 the final field was 214.
I finished in 45th place. =\
Blinds were 1k/2k. I was on the button. Two people ahead of me called the blind. I had pocket 7's and raised to 4k. Small Blind called (which put him all in.) Big blind folded. The two that called the blind also called my bet. So we had 4 players going into the flop.
4 of clubs, 9 of diamonds, 6 of hearts were turned on the flop.
No high cards so I was looking pretty good. Nobody paired up their over cards. The first two people checked. I pushed All In. (12k). Both people called.
4th card was an 8 of clubs. Again. No high help. But it does open a shot at a flush. It also puts me one card off a straight.
The two people check.
5th card is a 10 of spades. I hit a straight! Im feeling confident. First person checks. Second guy bets 15k and chases the other person out.
Small blind guy flips over his cards. He had Pocket A's. I flip my 7's to show a 10-high straight. Third guy flips a J Q.... Q-high straight.
And with that, I was done. I got beat by a bonehead that called a 12k bet that was holding an offsuited Jack Queen

I want to congratulate you on doing as well as you did. But I also wanted to point out the player that beat you. Unfortunately with poker becoming as popular as it has, there are more and more bonehead players out there. Finding a good game here in vegas is impossible unless you have a lot of money to play real high dollar games, otherwise 9 out of ten players are boneheads calling all the way with fucking 2 6 offsuit.Homercles wrote:And with that, I was done. Expect it to get worse before it gets better.
It strikes me that a good poker player should have an advantage over the bonehead players, and not the other way around. Unless you define a "good poker player" as someone who can't take advantage of someone who sucks?
This not not to say that Homer isn't a good player. I'm just saying it sounds strange to complain that you were beaten because the other guy was a worse player than you. What kind of wierd game would that describe?

The Boney King of Nowhere.
I think he is referring to that the person is going in with a hand that anyone who knows how to play poker would not play. And then they get lucky on the flop etc.. then they end up winning it because they played a hand that anyone who has played for any amout of time would not.
Especially after they are calling and raising when they don't even have a hand.

Homercles, I got something to say that will make you feel better. Forget about the guy holding the offsuited JQ who landed a higher straight on the river. If a ten wouldn't have dropped, you still would have lost. Remember the pocket As. You had like what, a 2 percent chance to win? Ain't poker fun
There will be more chances...Maybe I'll see ya there next year as well...

A better player will win in the long run, but that doesn't mean that a real stupid ass doesn't get a lucky card to win a hand he had no reason playing to begin with. Skill is a lot in poker, but luck is too. This years WSOP is a great example of that. All the top ten players were eliminated in the first day just about. They couldn't get any cards to play.Mplor wrote:It strikes me that a good poker player should have an advantage over the bonehead players, and not the other way around. The problem is, you watch tv, and you see guys play some real crazy shit and you see it work everytime, because it makes good tv...you don't see the billion times they look like idiots because that gets left on the cutting room floor. People with less than a brain don't understand that.
Any given day of poker, I probably play about half my hands. i watch players at the table daily that never fold.
But Val, the thing about it is I played my hand correctly. And even if that 10 wouldnt have turned up, I still had the side pot won. Pocket A's were all-in with very little chips. I wouldve won the side pot regardless of the river card.
The guy with the jq did not play his hand properly.
He called the blind. Sure. Thats ok. Even calling my initial raise is ok. But calling a 12k bet after he received absolutely no help on the flop. That was a bad move. And only blind luck saved him.
I shouldve rephrased my bonehead statement. The guy had gotten that far. Hes obviously not a complete bonehead. But that was surely a bonehead move to stay in that hand.
But hey, thats poker. Thats what makes the game so much fun. Anyone at anytime can win wether its thru skill or blind luck. But more often than not, skill beats luck.......not saying that I have much skill.
On a positive note, the guy that knocked me out didnt last more than 10 minutes afterward. His luck ran out and all my chips ended up with someone that made the final table.

work everytime? WTF are you talking about? I just watched a repeat last week where some guy went all in with crap and LOST! Yeah, works everytime eh?...Yeah most of the tables they show are the good ones, but they do show people playing some stupid shit also.
Homer, that's just how it is. If everyone played the hands how they are "supposed" to, then everyone would be playing the same and what fun is in that? I just got wiped out tonight because the guy played a 3 7 suited, when I went all in with pocket Ks and got the flush on the river. Then he finished me off a couple hands later with he played a 4 5 offsuit, and fkr pairs BOTH of them on the flop and river when I paired Ks on the flop (had K 8 suited). Talk about dumb fucking luck. At least in the end he lost it all going for a straight till the river against a guy with a pair of 9s
