The game kinda evens it out when you have less people, certain Captains can be adopted into your family after a valorous campaign for instaince. Other people are just adopted randomly. My royal family has been blessed enough to have like 30 potential governors so i have people to spare to lead armies. Some of my general have 3+ children! My family likes to fuck!

Don't let the senate force your hand, failing on a mission to block a greek port when you are waging war across north africa is no biggie, they'll have you block palma again soon enough to even it out...I have 36 provinces right now... it's a slow crawl from here

I recommend fighting all your battles manually. The computer will just get men killed that you could have saved.

Things I have noticed. (Playing the Julii)
If you fuck with Spain make sure you have a fleet.
Leave some enemy ports available for senate missions.
Check your automanage settings if you lack a governor.
Have ships everywhere.

What good is having ships everywhere? And what do you mean by "everywhere"?

every corner of the map... and have them in fleets of at least 220 people, I am getting smacked down currently, lost about 15 provinces... but I am letting my allies join me in battles and letting them take the losses

I just got enough support to destroy Rome, which I happily did in grand fashion. I took 5 top of the line catapults, 8 Praestorian Calvery, 6 urban legionaries, and my general (w/ 50 bodyguards), and demolished the pathetic defenses. I got sick of those beurocrat asshole ordering me around.

I controlled all of western Europe all of england, scottland, france, germany up to russia and around the balkans and southern Italy.

The Scipii and Brutii factions instantly called to war, but I quickly signed a few alliances and ceise fire pacts with the remaining civilizations (Egypt, Pontus, Greece)

Unfortunately, Scipii is destroying me in Navy and Brutii is slightly below me in land power... So its going to be a long journey. I don't think I could possibly compare to the naval power, but I can take care of Brutii's army pretty well, they aren't as advanced as me, they still have Town Watchmen in theirs while I have full upgraded legions. They will die, oh yes, they will die!

Wow
that is impressive. I haven't gotten that far yet. I am still working on taking over the Iberian peninsula.

The reason for having ships everywhere is due to the fact that you will get orders from the senate to blockade shit and though you think you have ships close enough to do it you might not make it. Enemy ships will block your path or outright sink you. I am making the big ships now that hold 100 guys on each. I am going to float around with 4 ships in a stack and clear out those bastard spanish.

I love how this game does incremental death, so to speak, with navies. You don't lose your ships completely, you lose troops on those ships until they are gone and you are sunk.

Another thing I love is that the picture of your governors actually age.

Fun game
I keep on wanting to move to the Iberian Peninsula but the godamn Romans keep me going east

I’ve taken over a few major cities and am going to try to finish off Greece’s last capital city, then deal with the other half of the Macedonians, secure that part of the Mediterranean and then invade Iberia and go east, letting the enemies deal with Gaul for now

Imp the Brutii, is there any real difference between the 3 factions?

I've been battling away and its taking its toll on my forces, many of my huge armies are in tatters, its tough to build the huge armies with constant attacks. I haven't lost a city yet... But Brutii's forces have been keeping me busy battling it out over Europe. I had a CRAZY battle, I had 900 men, most of which were Praetorian Calvery vs an intial force of 1000 men, then a reinforcement of 500 men, then ANOTHER reinforcement of 700 men. So I take my horsemen and immediately charge the 1000, i make short work of them and they're running in no time, only a maybe 100-150 casualties, but i couldn't chase them all down since the second wave arrived, so I charged again, successful, but another hundred casualties. Down to what I estimate like 500-600 men left. theres still about 200 guys running around routing, when the 700 men showed up, I quickly realized I'm fucked, when i saw about 4 or 5 regiments of Triarie (spearmen). I was like... shit... but valiantly I had to defend my city. I sent my remaining men into the battle... I was winning, holy shit... oh no! my general is dead! FUCK! My men are routing! Nooooo We coulda won! WTF heh.....

I almost defeated a 2200 man force with less than half in an epic battle.

I decided to start fresh. I played the game the way they recommended with High Advice and such. Drove me crazy. So I started fresh now that I know what to expect somewhat. Not starting off as fast as I did the first time. I think I found a bug too. It seems the turn will end and start even without you doing it yourself. That is kind of annoying.

The greeks are nothing special at the moment, I took up an alliance with them, since I only need 5 more cities to win the campaign. And really the only faction I need to do that is to kill off the Brutii. Which I have alliances all around them attacking... Not to mention for some reason like all my guys came of age so I got a ton of 19 year old generals beating the shit out of the Brutii's pitiful forces. I captured their capital in no time, with a rag tag army. I should have this campaign won in no time. Though I wish I got to see some different units on the battlefield, haven't gotten to see the eastern units, or the egpytian units, or the elephants of Carthage. I only wish I had the chance to make elephants, wow I'd have full armies of them and rip the shit out of all my enemies. But I killed Carthage so fast they were barely making large cities.

My enemies cower before my mighty armies! Rawr! My cities are the pinnacle of civilization and my armies the fiercest. No one dares upset my splendor!

Anyway, yes, I finally won, It took taking over all of Germania, Gaul, Spain, England, Italy, The Balkans, and Greece in order to complete the task of 50 cities. Sad, cause as you when you finish, you can't continue on to fight your campaign, luckily I looked it up and found if you save while you have the victory message on screen, you can continue to conquor the entire world. It was good cause the frickin germans came out of nowhere with all two of their cities and fielded a 1200 man defense and blind sided my army that was sieging it with another 1200 man army, so my poor 1100 man army was pitted against 2400 men. I felt I wanted to fight this battle to see what I could do. They were quite powerful, and wiped my men out completely, but not before I could take out 1400 men of their dirty stinkin asses. On my very next turn I sent a top notch army and finished off both their Faction leader and his heir in one fell swoop. But I won on the next turn so I couldn't finish off their last city... But luckily i saved... luckily i saved, i will have my vengeance.

Brutii are the best faction for rapid expansion IMO.

1. They have the temple of Mars to produce veteran units.
2. The conquer to the east so you can acquire great benefits by capturing wonders.
3. They start the game being able to produce light calvary.
4. They face relatively weak rebel cities on the Aegean Sea.

They do however, have some drawbacks.
1. You have to have a powerful navy because you will not only be facing the Greek navy but also the Macedonian and Egyptian navies.
2. You have to continuously ferry troops from your capital to the grecian pennisula.

After I secured Greece, I swept into the turkey and took down the western three provinces and rhodes. After Sardis fell the egyptians declared war on me. I loaded my troops from Sparta and Athens and swept down to Alexadria. I don't think they were expecting a invasion of their capital and I caught them with minor forces ready to defend. In three turns the Egyptian's largest cities fell before me and I had five wonders in my possession.

Elephants are awesome, so far I have 4 units of elephants in my main army 2 have a silver bar ranking. I got all for as a reward from various senate mission. That damn senate keeps wanting me to attack Carthage and I keep refusing as I am trying to mop up the Macedonians and the Egyptians are being pests from from isreal. They seem to want there capital back. At leaast, I have 3 generals in the senate including my leader as the highest officer. I hope I can hold this position because at this moment I haven't been following senate instructions. I just don't want them to order me to kill my faction leader if I fall out of favor.

Fuck 'em, just put a giant army sitting outside Rome at all times. For some reason I did that and they didn't care at all when I picked which missions I wanted and which I didn't. Once I got enough support, I had an army sitting outside the Brutii, Scipii, and SQPR capitals and I took them all out in one turn.

I have to say I'm absolutely rivetted to this thread. The descriptions you all give are rivetting and the game 'sounds' extremely exciting.

That said, I downloaded the demo, and just could not get into it at all. It's pretty, but the battle animations are kind of cheesy, and the combat did nothing for me. Is this just a problem with the demo, or is the demo fairly indicative of the game as a whole?

From your descriptions, I want to like this game, but from the demo, I just can't.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I keep up with this forum religiously, and after hearing everyone praise this game, I downloaded the demo also. I played it, and I just didn't find it very stimulating. I like RTS games, but the pace of this one just seemed too slow, and the HUGE armies actually took away from my immersion in the game. I was frantically trying to zoom in on the action in different parts of the map, and I just couldn't get into the battles. I like the strategy aspect of flanking manuevers etc, but there's just TOO much going on it seemed. Maybe I'm missing something too, but it just didn't grab me by the balls like it has most people.

Did I mention how fun it is to trample Egyptians with elephants. Unfortunately, I made a few friendly squishies from the beasts.

Another fun thing to do is rush some town watch directly into the enemy infantry then let my missile unit deplete their ranks. Town watchmen and peasants make good cannon fodder. While my infantry get in position and my cavalry get to the enemy flanks. However, now that I legionarres, they do a much better job holding off and desecrating the enemy.

Rome if you want to, Rome around the world...

Sorry, silly song association! :P

I'm having fun using my ambassadors beating far-eastern barbarians (rebels) to death with my wallet atm. Walk up to town, buy town, build unit in town, start crowd-pleasing improvement (preferably arena if available), lower taxes, town rebels, unit kicked out, walk up to town, buy town again, move unit in, build another unit, lower taxes, town rebels, etc until after 3-4 turns you have enough units in the town that it DOESNT rebel, and you get to keep it! :) Sucked up 3 scattered provinces on the far eastern side of the map that way so far that were miles and miles away from my territory (north italy, gaul, and parts of spain) and I could never have reached militarily. :) Preparing to collect more after my campaign in central europe that the Senate forced me into is done and I can spare the cash. :)

<3 my two new heavy onager units. Won their maiden battle for me, against the 1750-man british main army with my 1000 man strike force. :)

*Hugs*

As soon as the you get the people's backing, the senate asks you to suicide every fucking turn no matter how many missions you complete and then they kick you out of the senate. Bastards. Luckily, my leader was 67 and was about to die naturally. I sacrificed him, then moved all my forces from greece and gaaul and quickly crushed the senate and julii and alleviated italy and sicily of the scipii. My ~900 man army of gold bar troops mauled the 2000 man army of the julii in a herioc victory inflicting 1800 casualties after my legion broke their lines and my heavy calvary wiped them up. It was so impressive that many of my troops gained 2 experience bars in that battle.

Death to the Gaul. Playing on the hardest level is insane. I got backdoored by the Germans while I was concentrating on Spain. I am going to back down to medium.

Ok I know you use spearmen to counter cavelry. So what else goes with what? Cavelry take out the missile units and so on...

Basics of war... spearmen...standing still.. will decimate cavalry, cavalry are for missile troops and flanking/rear attacks... missles destroy spears because they don't carry sheilds...artillary horse troops are a royal pain in the ass, I hate them with a passion... artillary is just fucking fun, war pigs suck ass but are amusing, dogs are good, can't call em off but they are fun to watch run down the enemy, ground troops are your backbone, and gladiators are serious ass kickers

So has anyone tried playing one of the non-Rome factions? You don't get Senate missions (which sucks), but I imagine there are benefits?

Anyone "unlock" any factions yet?

Noel, if you don't like the real time battles you don't have to do them. There is an option to automatically resolve the battle, but I've found the numbers aren't as good. You end up losing more men than if you controlled the battle yourself.

I was a Civ III addict before this game. Now I am a Rome addict :)

Not getting senate missions could be considered a benefit too :P

Do you only unlock them via beating the game?

However, I notice the auto-resolve gets you more experience bars for some gay reason.

And yes you have to beat the game to unlock the other factions. Also, I'm not sure if this is true but I read somewhere that you have to eliminate that faction to be able to play them. As I said, that just a rumor I read somewhere and I wouldn't really know as I haven't beat the game yet. I'm close though.

I wonder if you can unlock factions through the quick campaign mode?

I have eradicated teh Carthigens and the Gauls...I went to do a new campaign, and those two factions are now available to play as.

So yes, you, not the computer, has to wipe that faction from the board to play as them. Or you could edit the game file and just copy paste the factions from "Non playable" and put them under "Playable".

I accidently started a war with the spanish before I was ready because they told me to go take a town in the middle of the area and I landed troops on the shore. Well that area belonged to Spain and they got pissed. Rome gave me two turns to get out and I did but Spain was still pissed.

FYI (I didn't see anyone mention this) but you can unlock all the factions by winning in the SHORT campaign mode too. MUCH faster to do.

Awesome, thanks for that, Lala. I've been dying to play as Carthage, and the main campaign was taking forever. At least, it longer than the weekend...

Man playing with Carthage is the hardest yet. You get jumped on by two Roman factions from the get go, and unless you make diplomats in Spain and in carthage pretty early, say rounds 1-4, the Nubians and Spanish/Gauls attack you as well. Usually the greeks leave you alone in Sicily. I usually spend the first dozen or so rounds just defending and keeping from losing my cities.

Carthage is so far the most fun faction I've played so far. I have 6 companies of armored elephants. I took Rome with 72 elephants and one unit of infantry for a siege tower. On normal. I almost had a heart attack. My armies have no infantry anymore, usually 3 or 4 elephant forces flanked on each side by 3 cavalry. The elephants charge, engage the enemy, and then cavalry come in from the side. No one can stand in my way.

To play as Carthage, you have to accept that you're going to lose about half your starting territories. Caralis is a lost cause, and you might be able to hold Corduba for awhile, but it's doubtful. Sicily is my main income provider for the first 50-70 turns. Conquer this island first, then the Scipii will attack it every two-three turns. Defend Messana and you'll be ok. Once you get to about 250 or 240 BC, Carthage and Thaspus should be ready to start churning out armies. Conquer the Numidians to the west, and then take Lepcis Magna (sp) to the east. Do not attack the egyptians, focus on the Iberian peninsula first. Take all of Spain, and control the mountain passes. Then begin your assault on the Roman mainland. I took everything up to Rome, and then began to attack the Greeks. Conquering the Greek peninsula gives you the statue of Zeus, very useful for loyalty in cities. Did I mention not to attack the Egyptians? They'll be on par with you the entire game, so leave them if possible. They're my allies (costly, but worth it). Right now, I'm at 190 bc with 120,000 gold and cities built to the max. My invasion of the western european mainland is going to conincide with the fall of Rome. Oh yeah, and Hannibal is my faction leader.

I took a different approach. I went offensive from round one. I had sicily and the one island to the left of it that the red romans attack producing military from round one, including spain, and just went straight offense. I had my capital create stables for elephants to ferry to the front then went 100% financial with that city and the one beneath it. I decided the best defense is a strong offense, so I went for Italy first. I think I shocked the shit out of them doing that. I did not even need to make diplomats and ally with anyone, I just held the other factions off by upgrading walls from the get go and just defending till Italy was out of the way. I still keep infantry in my armies but only to tangle up the spearmen/hoplites long enough for my elephants to outflank and trample from behind. Their flag usually starts blinking for retreat after about 3 seconds. Freakin elephants.

Damn you guys are good. I am still dicking around with the campaign as the Julii. How the hell do you get so much money? I find myself killing off populations of newly conquered towns for the cash. I tend to have a lot of town with a negative money amount.

Bubba I usually set all my cities to very high tax rates until my economy catches up so I can set them back to normal tax rates. I set each city to very high unless the population happiness icon turns yellow, then I turn it down a notch till it's green again. Make ports and farm upgrades as early as possible, you get huge amounts of money from those two from sea trades and farm harvests.

I've been playing as the Seleucids in my current game, and i'm having fun beating people to death with my wallet. I didnt build any troops at all, just every money and population boosting thing I could get my hands on and a heap of diplomats. Then when anyone comes along and bothers me its just "Oh, youre coming to attack me? Hmm, How much to buy your strike army thats leading the attack? There you go! Now, how much for that army over there standing around looking decorative? And that group of 3 units that just left your capital heading to the front? And that 1 guy over there? And that 1 over there? And while I'm at it how much for that town? There ya go!" I got double-teamed by the parthians and the egyptians (both of which are really annoying, especially if youre a faction that doesnt have archers for a long while :P) and have happily bought the parthians to a standstill and peace, and I'm halfway to Thebes against the Egyptians, having removed their armies and a couple of their towns, and I've only had to actually fight 3 battles so far. :) And one of those was "buy egyptian family member, buy all the mercs he could, promptly attack nextdoor town on the same turn I bought the general" :P The egyptians, consistently one of the most powerful factions (as others have noted), have been reduced to 3 ill-guarded towns along the nile and no troops in the field, by a pansy armed with javelins and a chequebook! :)

Part of that secret is not building troops early on. They suck up cash as you buy them reducing your bank balance. They continue to suck up cash for maintenance every turn thereafter, reducing your ability to play financial genius in the future. And worst, and more subtly, they suck up your population out of your towns at the time when that loss is the most critical and will have the longest-lasting effects. Buying 80-120 man units every turn for several turns in a town with a population of 1500 and a 3% growth rate will hurt you badly in the medium-long run as your population dwindles, especially if you're having to replace losses to damaged formations into the bargain as you pursue an aggresive campaign from the get-go. Then you wonder why youre still living in mud huts 30 turns later and your cities wont grow and where all these advanced enemy units are coming from and how to fight them without taking even more losses thus preventing you from ever growing and being able to build all the fancy stuff the next size cities get. You get the idea. You *can* run amok with troops early on in the game, but if you do I'd strongly recommend that you have a specific plan and exit strategy, and be damn sure its worth the medium-longterm effects. Personally, if you can wait that long, I'd wait till your cities grow once each, and have populations/growth rates big enough that buying a unit doesnt actually reduce the population before starting to get seriously militaristic, except for small, highly effective units, like elephants and spiked chariots etc that dont use many people. Those will give you enough of a shock army to defend yourself when you have to fight against an enemy army that just wont bribe, and yet leave your growth basicly unharmed.

A lot of that depends on what faction youre playing, and their starting position of course. Its a lot more applicable to the less developed factions than factions like the romans, but its still something to consider, regardless of who youre playing.

Them's me thoughts, anyway. :)

*Hugs*

If this game is anything like it's predecessors, the replay isn't based on the tech trees, but starting location.

I started as the Selucians, but unlike Varia, I'm going military. The combination of elephants, heavy calvary, pikemen, and archers is fucking wicked. It took me a while to get going, but now that I have the full range of troops, my armies have NO weaknesses.

I'm all about Praetorians and seige equipment.

So much fun lobbing flaming pitch at troop formations, and seeing their general's horse fall over while burning....I can't get enough of this game.

I just started again using Britan..hoping it is more of a challenge with the smaller and weaker troop selection.
