I want to apologize if I offended you, that wasn't my intent. As it happens, I don't entirely agree with your opinions on the use of grammar and spelling on message boards, but I don't understand where your initial aggression came from.Lalanae wrote:wow what a dull fucking life you must have. No one here gives a shit about a few missing commas and the random misspelling. Punctuation has little value here. I write for a living. I deal with language all day long. I write for speed here, not for straight A's.
I think you just got your panties in a bunch because I argued with you.
ps "that" is there. You should look a little closer next time.
As I explained in a previous post, I do not make a habit of correcting people's mistakes nor deriding them for not possessing the discipline or patience to type well structured sentences. I didn't mean to put you on the spot; it was you who resorted to using your CV as a means to win the debate. I am sure that you don't misuse "its" and "it's" and miss commas at work, but that paragraph was by no means a good demonstration of your qualifications to pass judgement.
If you had read through both of the posts that I addressed to Noel, you may have noticed that I originally replied with the purist standpoint but later retracted that comment to say that twenthy century literature has probably changed rules for conjunctions. We agreed to begin with; good job, you win at teh intarweb debate.
And if you must know: no, I don't have a dull life. Thank you for asking.

Yes, you are correct: the "that" is present. The correction should be that the section "in conversational text" should be enclosed in commas to show the disruption in flow of the sentence.Lalanae wrote:I think you just got your panties in a bunch because I argued with you.

If I am pissing you off now, it is my intent. I am not going to be senselessly flamed by some poorly educated idiot who can't even use proper punctuation and grammar when commenting on how qualified on the topic of punctuation and grammar they are.
You jumped into this thread with guns blazing. You opened on me, but the real sign of your disinterest was when you played "The F5 (Refresh) Game" to quibble with Cart for nearly 15 minutes. Actually, I would guess that it was you that had your knickers in a twist.

Well, I was raised in Europe, split between The Netherlands England and France, I spent most of my later school and university years in England, and I married an English girl, so is there really any surprise that I speak with an English accent?Dregor Thule wrote:Use of the word knickers is a sure sign of someone who likes to think they're more intelligent than they really are.

I believe that I am partially responsible. I anticipate a few more posts and the opportunity to pharm teh VVs, especially in light of the fact that two of my posts each contained a spelling mistake.Hoarmurath wrote:So...who is responsible for this complete derail? I might as well take this opportunity to shamelessly farm some posts.

archeiron wrote:Conversational text on message boards, instant messenger, email, and chat relays is a relatively new medium of communication. The technology does not allow for the conversational elements present in spoken language. However, the rules of our language form a coherent framework for communication. When people habitually ignore those rules out of ignorance or laziness, it can have lasting negatice effects on our language.Lalanae wrote:Jesus christ people. I have an English degree and its commonly accepted that in conversational text (most notably in online environments) the rigid rules of grammar do not have to apply all the time. Textual communication loses so much as opposed to spoken communication, that conversationally its is ok. There are those who argue that punctuation should be used as a device to denote length of pauses. A period is a longer pause then a comma and in some cases works better. Starting a sentence with a conjunction emphasizes the change in thought.
Then there are those who understand that language is an ever-evolving thing. We would be speaking Greek if it were otherwise. Only the French are notorious for trying to maintain the "purity" of their language and they come off a bit silly for it too.
Bottom line: There is NOTHING wrong with starting a sentence with a conjunction in conversational text.
I hope that the numerous grammatical and spelling mistakes in your response were a parody.

there probably are in this one tho.
archeiron wrote:I am not going to correct it fully, but I will point out a few errors. I am not in the habit of correcting mistakes on these boards, nor do I intend to start, but my final comment in my previous post was appropriate.

I stand by my original comments about conjunctions. I, also, stand by my observation that Lalanae's posts have incredibly poor construction for someone who has an English degree and writes for a living. I have never claimed to be infallible. Yes, I make mistakes as often as anyone else, but at least I try to make an effort to be coherent using proper English.

STFU about spelling and grammar nobody here really cares, it is only ever used as a petty argument.
All posts are personal opinion.

Sweet. So, could this be the first documented use of the word "Cartalas" as a verb?archeiron wrote:Cartalas much?Thess wrote:Arch u r l33t dawg
cartalased
cartalafied?
cartalasified??
Usage(1): I would have been on time to work this morning, but the traffic was completely cartalased!
Usage(2): Amy cartalafied her diary so that it would be utterly unintelligible to her parents.
And I thought Canadians and English loved each other still!Forthe wrote:No but he is the one who is going overboard in a Howard Dean like way.
