I'm making my wife vote

My wife has never voted. My wife knows zero about politics, and has always refused to vote because of this. To give you an idea of how in the dark she is, she did not know Kerry was a presidential candidate until about two weeks ago. She avoids politics like the plague. No more. I told her she was voting this term. Of course she refused because she knew nothing about politics and was afraid of making the wrong choice. So then she asks me who I am voting for. I almost told her, but then I realized I would just be casting my vote twice because she would just trust my judgement and vote for the same person. So I made a deal with her. I printed out her voter registration form and we are going to watch the debates tonight. I will not tell her who I am voting for, and I do not want her to tell me who she is voting for. We keep it to ourselves until after we vote.

She will cast her vote based 100% on the debates and I am fine with that, as long as she votes and it's not just me getting two votes through her. She does not watch the news either so she has kind of shielded herself from left and right slants.

I know this sounds weird but is anyone else in a similar situation with a family member?

-edit- man its going to be extrememly hard to watch the debate and not make any comments. I don't want to taint her decision!

Smart move not telling her who you are voting for. I know during the canadian election time, I knew some people who had no clue about what is going on. I thought it would be best if they just stayed at home that election night, thats only assuming they knew there was an election that day.

I'm predicting if she is voting solely off the debates she's going to cast a Bush vote, because he is a very personable fella, mind you he's no Clinton, but well.. John Kerry...

Ugh debates.. they are such a joke here.

My gf has never voted either, and I am still working on getting her to vote. She is well-informed though, but considers it pointless due to how the election works. We'll see, still working on her.

My wife and I have always voted and always agreed on the canidates except when I voted for Bush in 2000... We are both voting for Kerry this time as is my mom and sister as well. But we will watch the debates and talk about it.

Back in 2000 she really didn't understand why I would vote for Bush over Gore. We discussed it and she didn't think, in her mind, my reasoning was enough to justify voting for him... so we voted differently. However I'm glad we had the discussion because even though I'm the one who is usually more ingraned into politics her view, from the fringes, can be very enlightening and worthwhile.

Im a little more selfish this time around

, but taking such a neutral stance is a godamn difficult this to do. I dont take guilt into getting people to vote my way, I already got 2 friends to register, my mom to change her mind and helped my bros wife swing over to Kerry too, I would explain politics to her on nov.3rd. Being in florida we need to rack up all the kerry votes we can atm.

Dont you live in texas or one of those states? Hell, with this system i wouldnt go out of my way to vote either, or id just vote for Nader or a 3rd party, I just happen to live in one of the 15 or so states where ones vote actually does count.

My wife votes, and she and I both share the opinion that it is the responsibility of a good citizen to be informed about the issues and to vote.

Bullshit. There is absolutely zero point for let's say a democrat to vote in a state that is guaranteed to go republican or vice versa.

No there is a reason to vote regardless. If you want to change things in a democratic manner you HAVE TO SHOW YOUR WISHES. Not voting means the party you support cares even less about you next time. You are right, if THIS election you have no shot of influencing things, you can influence the next election. Stop thinking about putting food in your stomach tonight, and start thinking about the future.

I think you should vote no matter what, I see it as both a duty and a right. By voting, even in a state where you are quite sure the other party will win, it might not... or at the least it will give the parties an idea where they stand next time.

When your state has been going one direction for ages and that wont change.. yeah I can see why people get discouraged. With as stupid as the election system is you are basically begging people not to vote.

But oh wait.. that is beneficial for those better off, isn't it?

If you do not vote, then you do not count. You have no valid political stand, you are not part of the process, and you have no reason to complain. Whining about politics and not voting is like demanding military interaction in third world country X and not serving.

The update is she says it was a very good debate and hard to tell who a "winner" was. The only other comment she made was that she "likes Kerry". That may be an indicator of which way she will vote but I am not going to ask until after. I don't want to give anything away, body language or anything that might sway her.

As for myself I honestly thought Kerry would steamroll Bush but I don't think it happened.
