learn how to spell it

HYPOCRISY

HYPOCRITE

Note the Y, the single P, the E at the end of hypocrite, and every other letter so many of you struggle with.

This is NOT a current event, I know, but for God's sake, it is used so frequently here, I think some of you would look less moronic if you learned how to spell it.

well we have a filter to publicly humiliate those who say a lot as one word.

Too bad there are too many misspellings of hypocrite to have a filter.

haha reminds me of that thread where the word "hippo" was used to describe hypocrite(but in the spelling hippocrite).

Anyways I found here later, I suggest you read the entire thing leading up and after when the word Hippo was used, quite a larf.

It's annoying as fuck, fuck the pacific northwest "I sound dead inside" red pinko commie bastard shitstains up here who can't comprehend that.

The historically proper pronunciation is sans-H.

The way I always heard it, the British used to not pronounce the H, either. Well after the US was established, there was a monarch...I think it was Victoria...in England , who (due to strained relations with France) decided pretty much unilaterally that the H in "herbs" had to go. I understand that several French-rooted words suffered the same fate, but the only one that I know of for sure is "herbs."

It's a case where the US actually has the "proper" pronunciation over Britain.

Edit>> Googling for confirmation on this story, but I haven't found anything yet.

What is odd is that the Americans spelt it Aluminium until the 1950s when it was changed to aluminum.
The ancient Greeks and Romans used alum in medicine as an astringent, and in dyeing processes. In 1761 de Morveau proposed the name "alumine" for the base in alum. In 1807, Davy proposed the name alumium for the metal, undiscovered at that time, and later agreed to change it to aluminum. Shortly thereafter, the name aluminium was adopted by IUPAC to conform with the "ium" ending of most elements. Aluminium is the IUPAC spelling and therefore the international standard. Aluminium was also the accepted spelling in the U.S.A. until 1925, at which time the American Chemical Society decided to revert back to aluminum, and to this day Americans still refer to aluminium as "aluminum"

Well no I didn't, but it wouldn't have been a bad idea had I seen the thread sooner.

I once read a book that suggested that as you're reading, if you came to a word you didn't know, you should look it up before proceeding with what you were reading. By the same token, if you're going to attempt to type a word or use a word, and you're not sure of the spelling/definition, you should take the time to look it up.

Having said all of that, if the book would have also suggested improving my typing and shoddy proofreading skills my life would be much better.

http://www.m-w.com
http://www.dictionary.com

Given that if you're posting here, you're already on the Internet, it would seem stupid to make yourself look careless or stupid on a regular basis.

Of course I always forget how COOL it is to not care, or to be able to type really fast. But I guess you always forget how retarded it makes you look.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I'd take that one step further and say if you're writing something, and you are attempting to use a word which you aren't quite sure of the meaning/spelling of, you shouldn't use it. Nothing stinks like bad prose.
