CBS fined

Post by Midnyte_Ragebringer »

You mess with Bush you get fucked. Looks like CBS is feeling the wraith of Bush's FCC control.

It could be coincidence, but I think they are gettig theirs for the Dan Rather Memogate thing.
FCC Fines CBS $550,000 for Jackson Super Bowl Show

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

WASHINGTON — Federal regulators on Wednesday fined CBS a record $550,000 for Janet Jackson's (search) "wardrobe malfunction," which exposed the singer's breast during this year's Super Bowl halftime show.

The Federal Communications Commission (search) voted unanimously to slap each of the 20 CBS-owned television stations with the maximum indecency penalty of $27,500. The total penalty of $550,000 is the largest fine levied against a television broadcaster. Most of the FCC's bigger fines have been against radio stations.

The commission decided not to fine CBS' more than 200 affiliate stations, which also aired the show but are not owned by the network's parent company, Viacom.

MTV, a Viacom subsidiary, produced the Feb. 1 halftime show, which featured Jackson and singer Justin Timberlake (search) performing a racy duet. At the end, Timberlake ripped off a piece of Jackson's black leather top, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of about 90 million.

Timberlake blamed a "wardrobe malfunction," and CBS was quick to apologize to viewers. The breast-baring song generated a record number of complaints to the FCC -- more than 500,000.

Viacom has said it will fight any fines leveled against its stations for the Jackson performance. Over the summer, Viacom co-president Leslie Moonves said a fine would be "grossly unfair" and promised a court challenge.

Federal law bars radio and non-cable television stations from airing references to sexual and excretory functions between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., when children may be tuning in. Once a complaint is made to the FCC, the agency determines whether the broadcast was indecent.

Within days of the Jackson incident, lawmakers on Capitol Hill (search) began grumbling about smut on TV, and both houses passed legislation -- still pending in Congress -- that would raise indecency fines. The House has voted to raise the maximum indecency fine to $500,000. The Senate voted to increase the top fine to $275,000 per indecent incident, with a cap of $3 million per day.

The FCC launched a crackdown on indecency soon after the Super Bowl, resulting in several high-profile fines. Among them: a $755,000 fine against Clear Channel for graphic drug and sex talk on a "Bubba the Love Sponge" radio program and a record $1.75 million fine, also against Clear Channel, for indecency complaints against Howard Stern (search) and other radio personalities.

Television networks also began taking pre-emptive action by implementing broadcast delays so censors could scrub anything deemed too racy. CBS, for example, aired the Grammy awards ceremony a week after the Super Bowl with a five-minute delay. More recently, the NFL kicked off its season with a live, pregame show on ABC that was aired with a 10-second delay.

If that is the case it's pathetic... it's a BOOB, get over it. Only some freak with obvious sexual issues, possibly performance but more likely size - like Donald R. would freak about this. The fact that many American's did just makes me sad.

What does this have to do with 'messing with Bush'?
This is obviously a case of 'messing with boob'.

550k is a drop in the bucket when you take into account the money CBS made on the superbowl telecast.

Chalk up another thing I'll never understand.. how scared you are of nuditiy and the human body yet how you worship violence. Just take a look at how movies are rated and which scenes are censored.

Normally, I'd agree. But, I really don't want nudity in my Super Bowls. I was awatchign that with my son. I'm all for nudity after a certain time and on cable channels etc. I agree with CBS getting fined, but I thought the timing was a little more than suspect.

What is wrong with your son seeing an exposed breast? Why is that a problem? Has he seen your wife's breasts? What's the difference?

heh you can go to any beach back home and see way better stuff every summer day :) I mean, it's not like she stripped naked and pulled out a dildo and went to town with it. I found the whole thing silly, yet I found the BS afterwards ridiculous.

My wife is breast feeding our new son, just like she did our first... if we have another she will do the same and so on. Who knows how many kids we will have... it's more financial than anything but neither of us have a problem with nudity. No, we don't go to nude beaches but a boob is just a boob. We as American's make WAY too big a deal about nudity. We often allow very innappropriate and extremely sexual comments on the major networks PLUS all the violence Kelshara was talking about yet ONE BOOB is exposed and the whole nation freaks...

I can remember back in High School dating a girl from Germany. Looking at her photo albums from back home were "cool" because her and all of her friends never work tops to be beach... until she got to the US she didn't even own one... Now I have to admit I'm still a "boob" guy but it helped me gain a different perspective. "They are just breasts, it's no big deal" she would say... I still apprecaite and LOVE breasts for a number of reasons... I just do :) I'm just much of it was societal though... Just like with drinking, part of the reasons many kids do it is because they are told not to, you don't see anyone drinking a whole case of diet coke at night or anything... I just hope I can demystify some of these things for my children.

If you let your kids surf the net all by themselves, I dont see how 2 seconds of a boob is much worse.

Your son watches fucking cartoons with murder, violence and hatred, and THEN you get pissed off when he sees a natural part of the human body, have you ever even left the US ONCE in your life and looks at the perception from an outside source?

Well I am not sure I personally think the "malfunction" was a good thing during the Superbowl, but I also know that I just laughed my ass off at it. Shit happens, it's the human body.. nothing is more natural than that.

The only part that got me mad was the fact that JT and Jackson said they didn't plan it (they so did).

They can't say they planned it or they'd be fined, probably lose any money they earned from CBS, etc etc etc.

Can someone tell me how CBS is responsible for this?

And second, can someone tell me why any responsibility is necessary? Or is the administration just trying to 'get back' at CBS?

I'd be willing to bet that, fighting fines is normally pretty stupid costs more and hurts business (all of a sudden your liscense to buy a new channel, or renew your liscense gets sent to the back of the pile)

Um, the fines were being talked about long before the memos came out.

Google made it easy to find a few examples:

In response to other comments: I don't let him watch cartoons with murder, blood, etc.

I second that. If I had a kid I would be way more careful with what he watched on tv violence wise (children's tv is way different here in the US than back home when I think about it) than anything. I'd gladly bring my son to the beach to look at the ladies though :p Have to teach'em early!

I'm glad they fined them, thouhgh I don;t think it was some consperacy of lies. I think that yes, CBS is likely the most left-slanted major media and getting a good story tip like this led them to rush it through without doing a real check on it. However I don't think that lack of research was Dan Rather's fault, he's simply the anchorman, there are others who do fact-checking at CBS, I think Rather just really wanted it to be true so he denfended it for CBS, when it was pretty obvious it was fake. It was simply bad journalism, not some vast left-wing conspiracy against Bush, and they should have come out wuicker to apologize for their mistake.
