Why is there a submarine top-hatch door on the front of that thing?

Wow, that picture brings back a lot of memories.

The picture is of a submarine Maneuvering (control room) for the nuclear propulsion.

On the left the panel with two wheels are the throttles, they control steam to the main engines (steam turbines) the bigger wheel is to go forward, the smaller wheel is to go backward.

The center panel is the reactor control panel. That is where you insert and raise the control rods in the nuclear reactor to change reactor power. There are also switches to control the reactor coolant pumps.

The panel on the right is the electrical distribution panel where you control the submarines electrical power from.

The simulator looks like the one from the S3G prototype in Ballston Spa, NY. I was stationed there during their decommisioning as a prototype instructor back about 15 years ago.

Not sure, but the guy in the photo could be Hyman Rickover, the father of Naval Nuclear Power, Although he looks heftier than I remember him.

By the way this is all highly classified information, and if I were to tell you any more, I would have to kill you and eat your brain.

That is all.
