CBS Dan Rather "We have been mislead"

Post by Winnow »

NEW YORK (CNN) -- CBS News said Monday it cannot vouch for the authenticity of documents it broadcast on "60 Minutes" casting doubt on the National Guard service of President Bush during the Vietnam era.

In a written statement, CBS said Bill Burkett, a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel, has admitted that he deliberately misled a CBS News producer, "giving her a false account of the documents' origins to protect a promise of confidentiality to the actual source."

In the statement, CBS News President Andrew Heyward said his network believed the documents were real but after further reporting cannot establish that they are.

"CBS News cannot prove that the documents are authentic, which is the only acceptable journalistic standard to justify using them in the report. We should not have used them. That was a mistake, which we deeply regret."

Heyward said that an independent review of how the reports were prepared and broadcast will be commissioned by CBS News and the findings of that review will be made public.

Rather: 'We have been misled'
In a separate statement, CBS News anchor Dan Rather, who was the principal reporter on the story, said, "Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers.

"That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where -- if I knew then what I know now -- I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.

"But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Bwahahahahaha!

Oh yeah. But FOX is biased!!1!11! You liberals crack me up.

Kerry supporters: Please get your campaign in order. It's sickening to say, but we at least need a decent showing from Kerry so Bush doesn't get a big head. Right now, a blowout is on the way as it stands.

Bunch of liars! Questionable documents sent from a Kinkos? lol. D E S P A R A T I O N..... BACKFIRE!

funny I don't remember you reacting like this to the completely verified proof that the bush admin knowingly used phony documents to justify their illegal war.

how can you equate that with a private citizen willingly deceiving a journalist with a false document? oh wait, because you're a worthless fucking troll.

there's already tons of other proof that bush is a draft dodging pussy that went AWOL from his already minimal cushy national guard job.

I listened to a guy who worked in the CBS newsroom as a reporter for 28 years.

He said that there is bias, but it isn't intentional. They're liberal, but blind to their leanings. This is a good example. They wanted this story about Bush to be true so bad, that they glossed over their fact checking along the way to make the case.

Not intentional, but institutional bias.

so are ABC News, the Washington Post, and CNN "liberally biased" for reporting over the last week about the several potential flaws in the documents that CBS put forward?

Yeah, you have the upmost integrity if you accept documents from an unverified source and unconfirmed authenticity of the documents that were sent from a kinkos and then spam them all over prime time on a major national news network.

All I want out of this is for you liberals to shut the fuck up about FOX. All networks are biased and CBS is probably worse than FOX. The difference is we don't bitch and whine about it.

Swiftboat Veterans for Truth is not on the same high profile level as Dan Rather and Prime Time CBS News although it looks like the same integrity in news should be expected from both sources.

Sorry, but I do bitch and whine about it. TV Network news has become the continuing education for credit courses in socialism which our high schools and colleges have indoctrinated into a lot of people.

That's a load of horseshit right there. All of the bitching started with conservatives talking about the liberal bias, only then did people start talking about how FOX was biased. It's the same thing with questioning Vietnam service, no one was attacking Bush for his service or lack thereof until people started questioning Kerry's service. Don't try and play the victim.

OK....news reporting has always had a liberal bias...along comes FOX and liberals bitch. Conservatives had a right to bitch before FOX as there was no news slanted to the right. Now we have both and liberals bitch.

We bitched when it was COMPLETELY one sided....liberals bitch when it's fairly balanced with bias on both sides : )

Bullshit.

Liberal Dems have been attacking Bush on it relentlessly since 1999. They never stopped. Kerry himself sought to make it an issue by trying to make himself appear the big dick war hero.

That is incorrect. When I watched Then Gov. Bush in Texas running for a second term it was brought up. In the 2000 campaign it was brought out in the campaign atleast 2 times like it was new information each time and brought up right before the vote like it was BREAKING NEWS!!!. And then again I watched the democrat primarys basically the past 2 years of bashing, and I remember seeing it brought up numerous times back in December till about May or June. Then they took a break from it and brought up more stuff about it again recently like it was BREAKING NEWS!!!

Everyone has heard about it, but there is no proof for the accusations. These documents Rather introduced was suppose to be some major proof and BREAKING NEWS!!!!!, and they were deemed phony and CBS now says they were mislead by a democratic opperative Burket :) I like Kerrys olive branch speech he gave at the convention, LOL.

Fair enough, maybe it was brought up in the past elections and I just wasn't paying attention to it. I'll stand by my statement though, as my response to Winnow was referring more to "no one" in the context of this board than around the world.

Media bias and questionable military careers were not common topics of discussion on this board until the pro-Bush crowd started bringing them up as attacks against the liberal media and flip-flopper Kerry not deserving his medals. I'm just saying not to poke an animal with a stick and then blame it for trying to bite you.

winnow the last time you have offered a post on one of these threads that approached being informative was about never :p

But Dan Rather is certainly somebody who has put a target on himself as biased, with his actions in the past and this story.

Dan Rather got this story wrong - yeah, it was a huge mistake.

However - Dan Rather has been a journalit for for over 40 years. Yes, he is liberal and softer on democrats. However he has still broken many stories to america that were right on target - just this year, abu ghraib among others.

After hearing about the farce he pulled in the 80's with the 8-9 vets he interviewed who told of all the horrible autrocities they committed in Vietnam, then to later find out not one of them saw a minute of combat, I think all his work is questionable now. Just my opinion.

Umm just last year a guy was caught making up stuff for USA Today, and a guy at the Post did it for years etc. Jounalistic integrity is not a magic binding force. It only has the value each individual journalist places in it.

CBS let themselves be led astray in their desire to slam someone and to score a scoop. They accomplished both, they slammed Rather and got their scoop on their lack of honor.

My responses are purposely phrased for maximum irritation to someone with an opposing view but, in general, they are accurate unless I'm repsonding to wild exaggeration from a liberal with one of my own in a mocking sort of way.

Although I agree with most of what you said, they did certainly skip a few basic fact checking routines in a rush to get this out before the election and get $ for ratings, your statement above is a contradiction.

They can't know they're liberal and at the same time be blind to their leanings.
