THe UN isn't perfect but its all we've got. I'm in favour of reforming it as it's nearly 60 years old and the world has changed a lot since it was formed.
However it's raison d'etre is a good and noble one and it's served pretty well. I shudder to think what the world would be like without it.

It is interesting,

The UN is a forum that allows repressive dictatorships to "vote" equal to representative governments.

Sadly there's a whole lot of dictatorships in the world. To me it makes sense that the UN has its hands tied with it comes to issues of freedom. Most of the countries voting don't want to see their family legacy of rulership threatened, and thus work against any UN action that might promote the infectious seed of elected government in a country neighboring them.

You want the world to sit down and talk. I agree that's a good thing. But at some point talk needs to produce meaningful action to better the world.

My hopes are high
My expectations are low

And I'll say another thing,

If I really was concerned about the UN becoming an impactful player in world events, I'd be all over this terrorism thing. It's finally an issue that both dictators and prime ministors can agree on. No one likes suicide bombers. It "could" be a unifying cause, because most all agree that it is something this world is better without.

Imagine if the UN got in action, and starting as a group making big disruptions in terrorist networks. Imagine if they starting grabbing the headlines moreso than Russia or the USA. That would be a VERY convincing persuasion to coax the USA and Russia into working together with the UN peeps.

But right now what do you see? A bunch of talk while things blow up around them. Where's the action? Where's the results? What have they done?

I grant you that nothing is cut and dried. No side is pure in this. But with action there is the chance for an improvement in our situation. With inaction, there is guaranteed havoc and repression.

yeah, martial law is a great way to liberate a country, and the puppet government you installed without even a remote hint of an election is a wonderful example of democracy. and 95% of the billions of dollars that congress earmarked for rebuilding that hasn't been spent on anything but cocaine and new yachts for halliburton execs and pumping oil is a brilliant use of money.

Someone somewhere seriously needs to knock the US government down a notch. I don't want innocent Americans to die, nor do I want innocent anyones to die. But for too long now the government of this country has played God and believed themselves untouchable.

I really do feel sorry for John Q. Public in the US. Our government already has us hated around the globe. It won't be all that long before someone somewhere says it's fucking enough already.

I would like to point out that both in the past and even today I'm sure there are some countries which function quite well under a dictatorship... it all depends on the dictator

One that is very benelevont and has the right heart and mind might have a much happier and productive country than many small democracies.

Again, we did to think that in every country most of the people are Mel Gibson playing William Wallace yellling "freedom!" I don't buy that. If you read some of the stuff that has been declassified over the past 50 years we did a lot a crap to a lot of people so that they could be "free" I don't call that freedom and I don't think they did either. As I have said before there are many people in the world who feel like there are more important thing to die for other than our version of "freedom."

PS - I would also like to take this time to THANK Mr. GW Bush helping to end "freedom" in Russia. GOP helped end Communism, looks like they are going to help bring it back in style

Putin's just been waiting for a reason, hey they scare of "terrorism" worked AND IS STILL working for GWB allowing him free reign! Lets seem if I can use the same on my peopel... yup... sweet!

bush admin is still trying to top up their eleventry gazillion barrel oil reserve in new mexico, despite the protests of just about every economist in the world. which is constantly driving up supply of refined gasoline, which is artificially driving up the price at the gas pump. which is making the gas and oil companies a lot more more money on the backs of both the taxpayers that are paying for the oil reserve, and the common person who has to pay high prices for fuel just to go about their daily activities.

and people like you will smile stupidly and happily continue to pay the enormously inflated prices for gasoline simply because the guy that neocon talking heads on tv tell you is supposed to be the president, is the president.
