How'd you like the way it built up to the suicide episode.
First some poor clown who's wife would like him to play less. Nothing inherently dangerous, fairly normal guy.
Then Ben Stein and his little offspring. Sent him off to boarding school, fixed his problem.
Then Mom. What a crock. Stated plainly in the story that he had emotional problems all his life. Slow learner. Didn't move out til he was 21. Then EQ entered his life. It was all downhill from there and he killed himself at his computer because of that damned game! Now she's "considering" filing a suit against Sony.
I do like the nude photos of this model. Too bad she's lost "The Look".

They're the media. They have to play their angles or no one will watch their show.
At least they gave Smed a chance to speak his piece. He came off off as cocky and ambivalent, but I am not sure if they edited it to look like that, or if he was just being cocky and ambivalent. Smed is pretty much a no-account asshole when it comes to stuff like this.
I agree that people have the right to throw their lives down the shitter playing EQ. I also agree that EQ is addictive and fucks up people's lives. I would rather see a show more about solutions than about the problems.

Ya know...I think anything potentially rewarding (in the behavioral sense of "reward") is potentially addictive...Drugs, Sex, Food, Work etc etc...
You can never possibly eliminate all focii of addiction, perhaps we should look more to the behavioral and biological roots and ask how we should change ourselves and our society to prevent folks from becoming addicts...I think its more about isolation and lack of community...
Glad I have this community to...keep...me...from...becoming an...addict?!

This is the same Smed who said everyone is a credit card number so he was probally being himself.
Afterall the media and government have long felt that the video game industry was corrupting children and is to blame for the decline in social values. Ofcourse, that is easier then the parents admitting they fucked up and should not have married people who were just good in bed. I'm sure the 50% divorce rate will be blamed on Pac Man and Mario Brothers eventually.
Atleast the one normal person in the clip was from my guild! The chick in the green blouse with dark hair is one of my encs =)

ok... I just sat thru the video that was linked in the other thread...
From personal experience, I know people that have lost their jobs, lost their marriages, flunked out of school and shit, and I have no sympathy for them really... It's all about personal responsibility.
Every step we take in life is a concious effort. We, as humans, have a freedom of choice as to what we involve ourselves in, what we do with our time, and how we utilize our environment.
Some people love to watch and play sports. Some people hunt and fish. Some people read books one after the other. Some people spend time in internet chat rooms. Some people go out partying. All of these things by themselves are capable of devouring massive amounts of free time if that is all you do.
With my free time I choose to play EQ. I go to school full time, and school comes first. I have a 3.8 GPA this semester because I have my fucking priorities set this way. I CHOOSE to place school first. Only when my homework is done do I log on and play. Sometimes I have several hours, sometimes I only have enough time to log on and say hello to friends and guildies. Due to this, I can not be counted on to attend raids. I can not be counted on to be part of a regular exp group. I play when I can, and I generally try to make the best of my available time.
There is a big world out there... I've seen a lot of it during my many years of active duty Air Force. Actually I have seen about enough to last me a long long time, therefore, I am comfortable in the little world I live in right now.
While if is certainly tragic that this kid shot himself, It's also kinda pathetic that Shawn Woolies personal failures have made EverQuest the focal point of this issue. His poor mother is devistated by her loss, yet unwilling to accept any responsibility for her own failings towards her son. The little bit I saw in the video is sure different from the initial new stories that were written about this guy and his mom. They seemed to have softened her image and actually made her appear to be far more intelligent that the first news articles.
Anyway... got a wedding dance to go to... no EQ for me tonight.

Why do you think Shawn Woolies death is tragic?
Here's what I think...

Well... it's tragic whenever someone dies. Somewhere out there, EVERY person has a direct impact on other peoples lives.
You Searyx, are the FUCKING PERFECT EXAMPLE. Allow me to illustrate.
In the event that you should put a gun to your head and pull the trigger... SOMEONE will be effected by that action. I can't attest to whether any one would care or not, but they certainly would be effected.
I know that several people here on this board will very rapidly copy and paste your sound file to their comments concerning your death in unabashed celebration.
..."He's an idiot. He's dead. Good. You mean there's one less doorknob in the world? Woooo What a tragedy!"...
Anyway, I'm sure you understand now why it is tragic when anyone dies. You for example, would deprive the people of this board of their token "whipping boy" in the event that you should die.

Correction: It is tragic to SOMEONE when a person dies. Not to everyone. Shawn Woolies death had no effect on me whatsoever, except to open up a new can of jokes.
For his mother, it is tragic. To George Carlin and I, it's humorous.
