Honestly, my advice is... Don't.

UV rays are sooo bad for your skin. Tanning is arguably better than laying out given that the environment is more controlled than the outdoors, but still... I knew someone who died of skin cancer, and it's one of the most horrible things you'll ever see.

Protect yourself with SPF 30 minimum when you're outside, and leave the tanning to people who are trying to impress everyone else.

I agree with noel. If you want to look tan there are some good self tanners on the market. You get faster results too. It's the ONLY way to tan safely.

Besides, who wants to end up with that leathery skin? Yech.

Great idea. Self-tanners are an excellent alternative, and some day spas are now doing body painting which lasts for weeks, looks great and is a far better way to tan than risking cancer.

I go to a place for the spray on stuff when someone comes to visit (I live in Florida). It lasts over a week and gives good results in 30-45 seconds. It isn't bad for your skin like tanning beds. Noel's point is the best advice one can offer, though.

Hell as long as you use something like an SPF 30 and spend a few hours a day at the pool or beach you will get a tan pretty fast.

oooh yeah the spray on tan booths are the best. Very quick, no streaking, gets all your hard to reach places, and seems to last longer than bottled tanners. The color is great too. I used one before the Vegas 2003 FF.

Just make sure to exfoliate your face first, because after coming out of one the first time, the little dry spots on my face caught the the temporary color they use in the formula and my face looked kind of dirty for a couple hours until I was able to wash off the temporary color. I was an embarrassing ride home!

Haven't tried the spray booths yet, but if you're looking for a self-tanning product, I can recommend the Ban de Soleil ones. They work great. Last about a week or two.

I never understood some people and their obsessions with being tan. Can anyone explain?

Even more odd is that the sunniest places have the most tanning booths. It's like people think they are expected to be tan because they live in a sunny place so they go to a tanning booth/shower/tanner whatever.

I'd have to google a bit, but I'd venture to guess that tanning is dying out like smoking...at least compared to the 80's and 90's levels. If I happen to pick up a tan playing a round of golf or something that's great but level of tan isn't something I think about or a factor in visual appeal when looking at others to me.

To most people, it simply looks better if you've got some color to you. If you're into fitness, it also shows the curves of you muscles better.

It's vanity. People do much worse than tanning for vanity.

Personally I look much much better when I have a good tan. I have dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin goes really well with it, but it is definately just for vanity. Right now I am not very tan, but before school started I was.

Kinda off topic but I find it interesting that newborns who are nursing are reccomended to take vitamin D. Why? Probably because these days, babies don't usually see the sun *shrug* Right now the big scare is skin cancer. I'll bet that in the future we'll hear of studies done on people who avoided sun exposure and the adverse effects it had on their health. Personally, I'll wear the sunblock AND go outside 8)

You need 1 minute of exposure on 1 square inch of your skin to get all the vitamin D you need for the entire day.

It never splotches on me. It fades evenly. All you have to do is make sure you exfoliate before you apply a self tanner.

But enjoy your leathery skin if you must!

Then Karae could just expose his penis for 7.5 seconds and be good for the day. On the other hand, Dregor would have to take the full 60 seconds...so I'm told by one of his ex girlfriends...doh..now you know I'm lying.

You guys missed my point! I know what is recommended now, but since that recommendation is widespread only in recent years, the statistics are not there to show what effects "totally avoiding" the sun is having on the overall population (yet).

I find these things work like pendulums. Over a course of many years, they swing drastically in one direction, then in the other and settle somewhere in between. So I'll wear sunscreen to limit UV-A and UV-B rays as suggested, but I won't totally avoid the sun. 8)

Fuck that. *I* get grouchy when I don't get out in the sun. That doesn't mean however that I don't wear something with an SPF when I'm in the sun for prolonged periods...

I don't know of anyone who totally avoids the sun... Its just stupid to not use protection against the damaging effects of the sun.
