Of course we boo the USA in Hockey, it's only natural! Not to mention the game is being played in Montreal, and they love to boo!

I have it recording right now, as I'm at work, so I'll make comments when I get home and finished watching it :P

Good game. I had to root for Canada as all the players I know from our home team were on it. But for the love of God, someone shred those uniforms they were wearing.

Only thing that bugged me was when the Canadian goalie pulled the guy into the net preventing him from getting up and no penalty was called as far as I remember. Was kind of surprised at the lack of action from Richards or Vinnie but at least a Lightning player got the first goal. :)

That's more of a Montreal thing - I wouldn't generalize it to the entire country. The Habs fans also booed the US National Anthem during the Habs/B's playoff series last year (btw, to my pleasent surprise, the B's fans cheered the Canadian National Anthem next game in Boston).

I am happy to see this tournement come again. I was fortunate enough to catch one game back in '96 (USA/Slovakia in Providence), but the final three games between Canada and USA were what really stood out: some of the best hockey I have ever seen. Man, did Richter stand on his head that tournie!

Anyway, good luck to all the nations - may the best team win!

Well I watched the USA / Canada game and the things I took to note were the following:

Whomever came up with the Canadian Jersey for this tournament needs to die a horrible horrible death. Nothing like some puke yellow with the maple leaf on it, oh joy!

Canada had a good intensity for the game, nice to see an opener like that. Usually Canada is lackluster at the start.

Esche scares me. I am having Richter flashbacks all over again :|

I was sad when Jovo went down, but that's life with no training camp before they rush in and play, we'll probably see a fair number of injuries.

Canada looks like they should win it this year, and reclaim what is ours by right! mouahah! hehe.

As for the comments about Sweden looking good, they really only played 1 period against Germany, and managed to give up 2 short handed goals. I would probably consider Germany to be the worst team in the tournament, mind you it seems the Czechs are doing a good job at stinking things up.

To give up a 4-0 lead in the 3rd period against the Czechs to have a 4-3 final is kind of scary. As asleep as you may be, you cannot hope to take a tournament with play like that. All I can say is I hope they stick with Salo, because he really does quite suck as a goally in these kind of situations. Go Salo!

Ya, they look like puke.

As for Lemieux, I had so much more respect for him today when he manhandled Konowolchuck for pinning Brodeur to the ground. I always have my doubts about him but he keeps proving me wrong. Go Lemiuex!

i've heard that television stations that have local market hockey contracts are hoping for a lockout, because they will make more money not having to pay for the programming (in other words they can't sell the advertising high enough to defray the cost).

Also the NHL itself will lose like $150,000,000 less by not having the season.

basically the players have no choice but to make some major concessions, because the league is financially better off not operating than operating in its current form.

Yep. Hockey players need to realize that their sport doesn't compare to Baseball, Basketball and Football in popularity. Their contracts need to be in the thousands, not millions.

ESPN Hockey 2K5 was released the other day and is on sale for 13.98 at Frys. They can't even sell their games for much!

The Canada Czech game was one of the better games I've seen in a while. Seeing USA lose to Finland was nice, however I'd have rather had a Canada/USA Showdown to make up for 96.

The Czechs really impressed me with their bouncing back from a horrible start, and the game against Canada, in my books, was the gold medal game. Short of having some major screwup, Canada should win the cup this year. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Now Brett Hull's comment from the tournament really is something that should be remembered. I think he's a fucking moron at the best of times, however his comment to the media of "I don't give a fuck about the fans" was really just the last straw. I seriously hope he loses all his money in some sort scam his accountant pulls on him, so he can see what life is like not making his millions a year for being a dick.

I'm interested to see how Kiprusoff can do against Team Canada tonight. He's shut down everyone in the tournament he's come across so far, following up on his spectacular regular season and playoff run from last year. I also think it would have been sweeter from the Canadian perspective to play Team USA, but I think we answered a lot of the questions about relative hockey strength in Salt Lake City.

As for Brett Hull, he's always had a mouth on him, but I agree his attitude to reporters (and fans) after being benched was going too far. The guy used to be an allstar but anyone watching Detroit in last year's playoffs saw what a pylon the guy has become: its like he reverted back to the way he played before Ken Hitchcock in Dallas made him play both ends... only now he's older and slower so he's not the offensive threat he once was.

Its sad: tonight and then no hockey until the World Junior Championships at Christmas :( Damned NHLPA and damned stupid asshole GMs like Niel Smith and Ron Caron who started the stupidity of the salary escalation...

I was surprised at Kiprusoff for some of the game, for a while there he was pretty shakey and was unsure of the puck, I'm wondering if it was because of the pressure of the Canadian fans and the importance of the game at that point in time.

It was nice to see the game with only I think 1 penalty called. Great play, clean, awesome hits, passes the whole 9 yards. Now that's what hockey is all about.

It kind of made me sick though watching the CBC coverage and them talking constantly about the CBA. Then seeing the NHLPA rep talk over and over about not wanting salary caps and they were going to shut down the season over it (those words were uttered directly from his mouth) made me want to gag. No-one seems to know who's telling the truth about how much the teams are making, and honestly they need to consent to a 3rd party audit to figure it out. If the player salaries are seriously 75% of total income for the teams then that's just downright fucked up. There is no way you can operate a business like that.

I also found it funny seeing Ron MacLeans arms crossed then they panned to him after the first talking from the NHLPA rep. It showed just how much he is disgusted with the NHLPA as well regarding their stance on not even thinking of entertaining a salary cap, and usually you see him very unbiased about things like that.

Also it was nice to see Neidemayer (sp?) round out his hockey trophy pile with the last of the major titles to win. He's now got World Jr Champ, World Sr Champ, Olympic Champ, Stanley Cup Champ and World Cup (AKA Canada Cup) Champ. I don't know if there's any other major hockey prizes out there to be had (ignoring the individual trophies that is).

I think this one of the largest looming issues: there is a fundamental lack of trust between both parties. The owners (historically) exploited the hell out of the players and made a shitload of money off them, but the tide turned in the 80s, once Eagleson was disposed of. Since then, the NHLPA hasn't forgotten about how they were once screwed over, even if a good portion of the teams didn't exist and most of the ownership groups weren't involved. At the same time I think, the owners are afraid of the people in the NHLPA who feel they have an axe to grind and at the same time (some of the owners are) trying to avoid having to publicly defend some of their financial practices.

Personally I tend to sympathize with the owners in this dispute, although it was their own stupidity and lack of spending discipline that brought them to this point (and I do blame the New York Rangers under Neil Smith and the St Louis Blues under Ron Caron for doing a lot of the early damage... although people like Bobby Clarke, Glen Sather and even the Wings under the Illytch ownership picked up where others left off). The salaries of present day NHLers, numerically, are similar to those of major league baseball players of 10-15 years ago and the NHL doesn't have the US TV deals even on a local level in most cases, that baseball enjoyed then and now, thus the commercial revenue stream to support those salaries.

Just sucks the NHLPA refuses to see that and is content to cancel the season :(

I share the exact same feelings as you Wulf. Its funny though, every other sport had a salary cap implemented without the players consent, the NHLPA should count themselves lucky it hasn't happened...yet.

BTW, if a salary cap is going to happen, the owners BETTER lower ticket prices. I would be very disapointed with them and regret my decision to side with the.
