Some Uncensored Iraq Footage

Post by Winnow »

One of my dad's old military friends has a son over in Iraq right now. He's a Captain currently working in some sort of close air support capacity. He sent home a few short clips. I thought you might like to see a quick glimpse of what it's like there atm.

The first video is an ambush while driving along a city street:

http://members.cox.net/fuzzydog/ambushaction.wmv

It's about 4mb in length

Second video is grainy image of a street and buildings after air support is requested:

http://members.cox.net/fuzzydog/bombing.wmv

It's about 680kb. Usually you see buildings being hit on the news, not people like in this one.

I find footage sent directly from someone I know interesting as opposed to what you see on the news. These two short movies aren't going to reveal anything you don't know but may give a better sense of what it's like driving around the streets over in Iraq right now.

Friend of mine in another game got sent over and took some still photos that he posted for us. His base got hit by mortars and he got some photos of it. Scary stuff.

Seriously wtf are we not giving these people combat pay?...I realize that Bush would be inherently contradicting his "Mission:Accomplised" BS but I don't think anyone realistically thinks the Mission was accomplished.

War was won months ago and there's no enemy force...

See, when you want to start a pointless war w/ no tangible enemy you declare a "War on Terror".

But when you invade a country and there's no real showing by their army, the war is over, and you don't have to pay your soldiers full pay.

It's Win-Win!

Where did you hear they aren't getting combat pay? I don't think it's true. I was getting my 150 a month when I was there like 6 months ago.

<---- Does not think an extra $150 per month is worth getting his ass shot at :)

That footage kicks ass though, one of my best friends is a former Ranger I can't want to show him these tomorrow.

The number of dead Iraqi people must be extremely high but not accurate.

This is a top Reuters story:

U.S. Air Strikes Kill at Least Five in Falluja

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... falluja_dc

This story is about 5 dead iraqis and maked the news.

In the second video I linked, you can count 15-20 that were most likely killed with that one bomb alone. In the first video, there's no way of knowing but the vehicle in front of the one filming is firing like mad as they race along the streets to evade the attack. It's highly doubtful they'd go back to see if anyone was killed.

My friend that was in Somalia years back told me of killing a rebel that was hiding behind a woman for protection. He took out the rebel by shooting between the womans legs. This stuff you never hear about on the news.

I fully support our current actions in the middle east but it's doubtful we'll ever get an accurate figure with regards to enemy (and civilian) casualties.

BTW, the tour of duty for the guy who sent those films back to his dad is over in October after his initial orders were extended beyond the original 1 year by another 3 months. I've known him since he was a little kid that was too young to read. I was over at his parent's house one day and I took the prize out of the cereal box before he got to the table. When he looked for it later I told him the box said you had to send away for the prize. His older sister was hot and didn't rat me out! I feel bad now that I did it. (it was a pretty cool little plastic car though!)

After 15 months over there, I'll ask him how he feels about the war and things in general when he gets back in October and post it here for curiositys sake. I'll vote however he does in the election to make up for stealing his cereal prize.

BTW, he isn't a lock to vote republican. He worked for Ross Perot for awhile. Ross Perot is a very generous man when it comes to our troops. He told my friend that if he ever needed anything to give him a call. Well when my friend got to Iraq, it turned out that the helmet liners and boots were inadequate. He called up Ross Perot and told him what the issue was and Ross bought his entire platoon helmet liners and new boots. Pretty cool of him.

They are indeed getting combat pay. It varies some but the average is $150 plus another $150 for seperation pay plus your income is tax free while there. Makes a nice tidy bonus of around $500-800 depending on what you pay for taxes.

Totally off topic here, but helmet liners?

The current issued helmet has no liner of any kind.

The boots thing... /shrug. No idea there. Normally when you go to a certain type of terrain, you get issued the standard footwear for the area.

For example:

Panama=Jungle Boots
Middle East=Variation of the Jungle Boot (mostly color).

What kind of boots did they get that were inadequate? Just curious.

I was never issued jungle boots in nine years in the military. They let you wear them but you had to buy them yourself and they were expensive. The standard issue boots suck ass with no arch support and they are hot as hell in the heat. I personally always liked Ross Perot.

Yeah, they weren't taken by my friend. I should have made that clear. (my bad)

Aruman, I'll find out exactly what the problem was with the equipment and what Perot sent them.

I guess it depends on what type of unit you were in. There are units that have a higher priority on equipment.

I spent the majority of my time in the 82nd Airborne. We never had a problem with equipment issues.

If it was a country like afghanistan then they probably wanted mountain boots. I remember over a year ago a friend of mine who is in the 3PPCLI was over in afghanistan, and he was telling me after he got back about the US infantry he was squadded with were all jealous over his boots and his rifle, because they were better than the US standard issue. He was a marksman though, and the 3PPCLI is trained and equipped for mountain fighting.

It was interesting to me because Canadians are always railed on for being poorly equipped when their standard issue stuff is superior to other country's standard issue gear.

I can't speak for Canada's grunts but from my time in the Navy, I was on a few Canadian navy bases and got to see first hand their materials and ships and even got to get underway on one of their gas turbine destroyers (full speed in less than a ship length), it was all modern and top notch. I was impressed. They don't have the fleet that we have obviously but what they do have is on par with Americas Navy. Why would it be any other way though considering they are one of our closest allies.

Ps. Their sailors even have an alcohol ration....a freakin alcohol ration, how sweet is that. They have a chit that they basically use as a punch card, 10 punches on it, they get 10 hits at the bar onboard their ship. Freakin sweet.

These are the same guys that broke the record for longest shot by a military sharpshooter in combat. And not just once, but twice in two weeks. Yeah, the sharpshooters of 3PPCLI have a nice rifle, too. http://www.sfu.ca/casr/101-ctac50.htm
