Here is my take on this.

.223 caliber ammunition is a very common type. Just about every hunter here in Wisconsin probably has a box for their hunting rifles. My experience with the M16(National Guard) would lead me to believe that the sniper wouldn't use this peice of shit if he had half a brain. Dropping the damn thing can mess up the sights and the thing really isn't that accurate beyond 250 meters. It is also too light of a weapon to keep steady for long range shots without a bipod or other prepared site. The police haven't said if they found "sniper" locations yet.

My guess is that the guy is using a high-powered hunting rifle. Probably with custom loaded shells to give them extra range. By hunting in the city the echo of the rifle would echo around nearby buildings so much that it would be nearly impossible to pinpoint the sniper's location right after the shot. Without knowing the angle of entry of the bullets there is no way to know if the sniper is shooting from above or from inside a car (or van).

My other guess is that there is more than one guy now. The first guy probably killed those first 5 people and got a big thrill out of it and there is a copycat that has taken over. My reasoning for this is that the first 5 people died really fast, over a matter of hours or couple days, and the last few people have been much more methodical.

Anyone want to guess that .223 caliber rifles and bullets will be the next to be outlawed?

CNN had some former Delta Force guy on the air this morning and he was saying the shots were coming from a range closer to 100 meters, as close as 75m in the case of the boy at school.

i assume that can be ascertained indirectly by the autopsy and the amount of damage the bullet does, indicating velocity at impact, thus range.

at any rate, i don't know if this guy was just blowing smoke or whether he really knew some details about the case.

The Home Depot shooting the other night was reported at 30m. I've read other places that many of the shootings were at several hundred meters, so perhaps there is no conclusive info on all of this yet.

So in that case, it would seem the AR-15 variants would be perfectly suitable weapons. He is only hitting stationary targets, or targets moving straight towards him or straight away.

they may have witnesses to the Home Depot shooting as well (meaning people who saw the shooter).

Deward: there is one shooter, the ballistics results indicate that. well there is one rifle involved at any rate.

They found a shell casing 140 yards (silly metric system) away from the boy that was shot last Tuesday, atleast according to the Washington Post.

Living around/working in DC has been stressfull enough the past year, and now we have this nutjob running around. Now the military wants to get involved, and as incredulous as it sounds, I wonder how much catching this guy is going to cost. Already, DC-VA-MD police are working overtime, and I certainly don't feel a bit safer. This morning I heard on the radio (Eliot in the Morning for DC folks) that someone was running around gas stations with bulls-eyes painted on his head, chest and back yelling into a bullhorn calling the sniper a pussy, etc.

I can't wait to move out of this craphole.

semi unrelated side...

there are 3.3 feet in a meter. So if you are trying to visualize measurements in meters. My trick is for every 10 meters, add another yard. Hence 10 meters = 11 yards. 100 meters = 110 yards.

It's not exact, but approximate enough for understanding. Works for me anyways.

EDIT! Don't try and post while eating lunch....i deserve a tar and feathering for that stupid of a mistake

I graduated the America's Army sniper range, so that means I am qualified to kick your ass.

Please recruit me and I will tell you harrowing stories of how these pop up figures tried to shoot me. Sometimes I wet my pants.

Mommy?
