Removing her from the couch at that time would have been too painful, because her body was grafted to the fabric after years of staying put. Her skin had become one with the sofa and had to be surgically removed.

C&P for the lazy out there.

PALM BEACH -- A 600-pound, 40 year-old woman was stuck to her couch at a home in Stuart, Wednesday.

Rescuers went in not knowing how difficult it would be to get her out. Authorities estimate that the had been there anywhere from 2-to-5 years.

"Family members are upset, it's a difficult position. We're trying to do the best we can to get the patient out safely," said Chris Wisniewski, from Martin County Fire & Rescue.

Fire rescue crews faced what seemed to be an impossible mission. Everyone that went inside had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful that officials had to blast in fresh air while they worked.

Officials say they had to cut a piece of plywood into a makeshift stretcher because a normal stretcher wouldn’t do.

An ambulance was too small. Officials brought in a trailer to get the victim out.

While rescue crews came up with a back-door rescue plan, detectives secured the crime scene and questioned family members on how it got this bad.

Using the planks, they loaded the woman on to the trailer, still attached to the couch.

Removing her from the couch at that time would have been too painful, because her body was grafted to the fabric after years of staying put. Her skin had become one with the sofa and had to be surgically removed.

Detectives are investigating whether they have a case of neglect by the family or if this is simply a sad story.

The woman is still at an area hospital where doctors have removed her from the couch.

This one is more positive although the story starts at 1000+ instead of 600.

I hate when news agencies do this, but in any case.. the article at the link has changed (instead of a new one being created).

STUART -- A 480-pound Martin County woman has died after emergency workers tried to remove her from the couch where she had remained for about six years.

Gayle Laverne Grinds died yesterday, after a failed six-hour effort to dislodge her from the couch in her home. Workers say the home was filthy, and Grinds was too large to get up from the couch to even use the bathroom.

A preliminary autopsy on the the four-foot, ten-inch woman lists the cause of death as "morbid obesity." But officials want to know more about the circumstances inside the home.

Investigators say Grinds lived with a man named Herman Thomas, who says he tried to take care of her the best he could. He has told them he tried repeatedly to get her up, but simply couldn't. No charges have been filed, but officials are looking into negligence issues.

Emergency workers had to remove some sliding glass doors and lift the couch, with Grinds still on it, to a trailer behind a pickup truck. She died at Martin Memorial Hospital South, still attached to the couch.

Neighbors say they had no idea Grinds lived at the duplex, though they had seen Thomas and some children outside. (AP)

Her life must of been a daily misery.

Very sad.

I bet the boyfriend is a sicko and superglued her to the couch. I don't understand why he never called for help way earlier? He left her sitting there for 5-6 years? That's friggin neglect, if not twisted-ass torture. Reminds me off glutton from the movie Seven.

I'd think they'd want to stay out of the limelight seeing as the material of their couch grafted to human skin.

IF she wanted to be that way no pity for her and the guy taking care of her shouldn't be hit with charges if he did what he could. she wanted to live like that more power to her.

If he did have something to do with her lazy ass then bust him but to me sounds like she wanted to be like that.

No pity if thats true.
