Let's exploit some desperate Mexicans!

Some TV shows offer an extreme makeover, others a bid for pop stardom. But the hottest reality show in the U.S. Hispanic market is offering the ultimate prize -- a potential green card to immigrants desperate to pursue the American dream.

"Gana la Verde" ("Win the Green") has attracted big audiences and hundreds of contestants willing to eat burritos crammed with live worms, jump off high-speed trucks or wash skyscraper windows in exchange for a year's legal help in speeding up their visa or green card cases.
Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but this is one of the most blatantly racist TV shows I've ever heard of.

Yeah! I want to win a green card too!

I read about it and didn't think it was particularly racist. Especially not since the target audience is Hispanics themself and not "white America".

So that's what the show that's been airing on one of the local Spanish stations is. It pretty much looked like a copy of Fear Factor, with Latinos in their twenties. From what I've seen, which isn't much, I don't see the difference between having the contestants in Fear Factor do embarrassing, dangerous and disgusting stunts for 50k and doing the same for legal help to get a green card. Are these people being exploited? Oh hell yes, but then so are all the contestants in Fear Factor and Big Brother (which incidentally is very popular in Mexico, the Mexican version of it anyways).

This program is being marketed and broadcast to Latinos, if they don't like it then it will be off the air.

Green cards are used as prizes all over, not just in Mexico. There are lotteries for them in Italy (a former Judge in Rome who is a friend of mine got his this way) as well as contests and the like, this is just a new twist on it.
