Todays Email
I got this email today from my sister who I have always considered a normal, fair-minded person. So to give her the benefit of the doubt I ask you, the VV'ers, is this nothing more then a message of hate and intolerance for Muslims? or am I being to anal? From the header info on this email I would say it has been forwarded at least a few hundred times.

I just find it very hard to believe that someone can read that and not see it as hate propaganda. Perhaps its the sentimental view of patriotisim that makes some blind to the fact that this is pure garbage. It does not make you a better American to hate an entire religion because of some extreamests.

Yeah this is tripe and anyone backing it as a message is fucking scum.
I could easily put together a list of acts commited by Christians that would smoke it in terms of evil. Hell Adolph fucking Hitler was Christian.

Let me suggest something to you. If you're pissed because "the other team" is getting a motherfucking stamp, I suggest taking a look around at the world in which you live and... oh, i don't know... shutting the fuck up.

It frustrates me that the separation of church and state mantra only gets brought out when you're talking about Christianity. Maybe that's what the sentiment behind the email comes from.
I wouldn't be so quick to judge people that would forward an email like that, so many people don't realize they're propogating racism until they are confronted with it. Most of the time they repent immediately when they see how bad they sound. Try it the next time you hear a racist joke in your office.

what? every year since the 1920's the post office has brought out christmas stamps. how many people do you hear whining about the seperation of church and state there? now they want to do a muslim holiday stamp and all the righties start slithering out of from under their rocks and either being outright racist and militant about it, or subversive like you and bringing up things like the seperation of church and state.Rekaar. wrote:It frustrates me that the separation of church and state mantra only gets brought out when you're talking about Christianity. While I do find the email disgusting in it's intention, to promote hate, I do wonder how many "Christmas" stamps are really "Christian" based and not Holiday based.
Don't get me wrong, I would suspect that there were many earlier this century I just don't remember seeing one (not that I ever sent a bunch of letters). If we have done it for Christians, we should do it for Muslims - Separation of Church and state should hold there. Of course if we haven't done it for one we shouldn't do it for the other...
Another intersting note is the "can't put the ten commandments on federal pro!perty" I guess they were so excited about making their point they forgot how to type. It's also pretty funny that some people think a stamp, which is nothing more than a picture which will run for a couple of months, compares in anyway to a granite statue in a federal building... Now if a bunch of Hindus wanted to put a Golden Calf at a federal building I can see the arguement but otherwise... heh.

Its a religious holiday although most people celebrate it as a commercial holiday, including so-called Christians. I'm not sure what post you are talking about but I imagine that was the general discussion. Maybe you should link the thread instead of being vague about who said what.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:Didn't about 90% of you argue with me about Christmas not being a religious holiday 9 months or so ago? Ahh, that's right, it wasn't privatized, but it was changed from being an agency to a corporation.Krurk wrote:Tremble before the power if the mighty Wikipedia!

:A government owned corporation doesn't have stockholders such as a private corporation, instead they are owned by the government. This basically gives the postal service the ability to operate independently, but still allows a higher level of govt regulation than a private company. Since the postal service is a govt owned corp, instead of a govt department or agency, they do not directly receive their funding from the federal budget, and must rely on revenue (such as sale of postage, etc.) for funding. --[[User:WhiteDragon|WhiteDragon]] 13:32, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I have been receiving inquiries about this chain letter for several months. It claims that we are not good Americans unless we boycott a commemorative stamp issued by the United States Postal Service honoring the Muslim Eid Holidays. Using the stamp, according to the chain letter author, is a "slap in the face to all those Americans that died at the hands of those whom this stamp honors".
This is not exactly a hoax since there is such a stamp. But I should point out that this US Postal Service stamp was issued 10 days BEFORE the terrorist attack on the WTC. I must add also, that it has been fairly popular. This may account for its reissue in 2002.
The meaning of Eid in Islam is reoccurring festival or celebration of happiness. It is much more like a type of thanksgiving holiday to God. Islam has two of these Eid a year. Even President Bush has issued Greetings to those celebrating the EID holiday, and went on to list all the areas in which Muslim Americans have contributed to our country. The White House web site also posts information about this stamp which implies his approval of its use. (See resources below)
Of course, the fact that it has been moderately popular has gulled some bigoted individuals. I must say that personally I don't lump all Muslims into the same category as the terrorists anymore than I would throw all Christians into the same category as those who bomb abortion clinics and shoot doctors. Most Muslims are peace-loving people who just want the best for their kids like anyone else. My opinion is that boycotting this stamp is an example of the kind of hate-mongering that just feeds the beast in all of us.
As you know, if you are a regular reader, I'm opposed to forwarding any type of chain letter. However, in this case I oppose not only the chain letter method used for spreading this message, but the message itself.
