one thing i never really understood is why meat eaters would care about animal cruelty

its gonna get butchered and your gonna eat it, why does it matter if it gets kicked around first?
its not having any kind of life sharing a tiny cage with 30 other chickens

if your a vegitarian i could understand the concern(depending on your reasons for it that is)
but if you like the meat, fuck the animal

I disagree. I eat meat and I wouldn't want the animal to go through any more pain than is necessary when it is harvested for food. I'm not a big fan of them sharing a small cage with 30 other chickens either though, for that matter. It should be possible to raise livestock animals in a healthy and 'natural' environment so their days, while numbered, can be as pleasant as possible.

I totally agree with you Xou. Eric and I have been making the transition to organic animal products (inlcuding milk and eggs) for that and other reasons. There is a humane way to raise animals for food. There is a humane way of killing an animal that minimizes its pain. We boycotted KFC over a year ago mainly because of the hormones they inject into their chicken.

Many native tribes, while relying on animal flesh for food, still respected the lives of the animals and even had rituals where the animal was praised or thanked before or after death. They recognized the animal's death as a sacrifice to the the well-being of their families and respected said creatures. If animals can be raised for food humanely, they should be.

So with your "fuck the animal" attitude Kriista, are you saying its ok for people to arbitrarily abuse animals because they are gonna end up dead? Where does that attitude end? Animals in the pound? Animals with terminal diseases?

I'm all for making the lives of chickens as enjoyable and painless as possible but there are 450 million chickens in the US and 3 Billion chickens in China. With that amount of chickens, it has to be quite a task to maintain the farms.

Besides not shooting the chickens up with hormones and not abusing them physically, what is the suggested proper way to raise a chicken? Are there certain space requirements per chicken and of course sanitation concerns. Would doubling the price of chicken products allow for a better life for chickens? It's a serious question as the billions of people on this planet need to be fed and chicken is one of the low cost foods that low income humans eat.

Veal is probably the most disturbing animal food farm cruelty to me.

Yes there are quite strict chicken welfare regulations for chicken farms as seen here

Prices of eggs and chicken meat went up sky high over the past year partly because of the tighter animal welfare restrictions

I agree with this because of the way the creatures are raised and treated. I have a friend who won't eat veal because it's 'young'. Which is bull. Like the cow missed out on a rich, full life of eating and shitting.

But the method in which veal is created is just wrong.

Veal is raised far better then chicken, if you know the meat industry at all you know chicken is probably at the bottom, veal somewhere in the middle with pigs, beef below that actually in factory lot conditions, then your premium meats on the top

There are many people who can taste the difference between a free range chicken and a chicken that comes out of a cramped cage filled coop.
The stress the go through in life directly affects the taste and quality of the meat.

i shouldve specified, ive been vegitarian for i cant remember how many years, vegan for many of those as well
although now i eat fish(i blame sushi) but that is neither here nor there

im all for free range and organic meats if your going to eat it

my original statement is aimed more at the 99% or whatever it is of people that dont eat organic/freerange, as im guessing more people are appaled by animal cruelty than those that do something about it
