Art movie suggestions?
ive recently had started taking a more proactive approach to watching movies, holywood has killed movies for me
that and, i dont listen to brittney spears, so why would i watch spiderman?
theres a good local video store that specializes in indie/foreign, going in there wihtout knowing what to see is overwhelming as fuck tho, its like trying to buy a good book by walking into a book store, aint gonna happen
so im guessing starting with directors is a good way to get into it, i want to watch some of the dogme 95 things, ive also tried to rent(they didnt hvae it however) bodysong, i just know because jonny greenwood did the soundtrack(its pretty decent), and what ive read of the movie seems interesting
any suggestions on films or directors would be appreciated
im also thinking about calling my cable company up and seeing if i can get IFC(just that channel, i dont want a movie package thing), not sure if thye do that or if its worth it
how good is IFC as far as seeing actually interesting films?
is it good shit, or just better than HBO shit?
thanks in advance

IFC is great. I usually watch IFC and Sundance whenever I watch TV. Its a great way to see quality indie/foreign films without wading through a lot of research. If you cant get IFC for some reason, you probably will just have to do some web research about what movies to rent.
Rottentomatoes.com is a great place to read film reviews. You can search a couple different ways, but I would recommend searching for films with a 90% or higher "tomato reading." This means that all the critics pretty much agree that its a good film.
As far as directors, check out Fellini and Bergman. Its not contemporary film but its some of the best "artsy" film ever produced. Kurosawa is classic too. Contemporary directors can be hit or miss, so I usually pay closer attention to the titles.
When I have a few minutes I'll make a list of my favs for you.

Habla con Ella(Talk to Her). Great Spanish movie. Drama/dark comedy/romance.
Amorres Perros-One of the most emotional and dark movies I've ever seen. Amazing direction and writing. Deffinately one of the best, most memorable films I have ever seen.
City of God- One of the best films I have ever seen in my life. Very intense. It's about gang-life in the ghettos of Rio De Janero. Incredibly powerful movie. Must see it.
Elling- Comedy/Drama from Norway. Two mentally handicapped guys just released from a halfway house, who try to live together in an appartment and adjust to their new lives in the real world. I looove this movie. Great quirky comedy.
