Something that scared you back then but should not

Post by Dups. »

I was thinking of this the other day.

There are two skits in Sesame Street that scared me quite a bit when I was younger and when I think about it now-a-days it's kinda silly that it did.

The first skit was I believe it was Grover that was having a picnic and then a bear comes along. That bear scared the heck out of me but in the skit he was not even meant to be scary.

The second skit was when Burt and Ernie go into a pyramid and Bert seperates from Ernie. Then suddenly a statue guy starts dancing around. When Ernie shouts for Bert the statue stops dancing.

Also in Fraggle Rock those big guys that try to capture the Fraggles scared me.

Anyone else have anything that used to scare them but now it seems kinda silly?

Besides the standard Willy Wonka Oompa Loompa answer, I'd have to say nothing in the Electric Company or Sesame Street scared me. Barney may have freaked me out if I was from that generation.

The librarian ghost at the beginning of Ghostbusters.

The part in The Last Starfighter where Alex is riding with Centauri for the first time and Centauri takes off his human face to reveal his alien one.

Those are the only two I can think of off the top of my head, but I know there were more :)

**edit** oh yea, thriller scared the crap outta me too...then again, all little boys watching Michael Jackson videos should be afraid :)

E.T. scared me though I liked the movie. My grandma did ceramics at the time and made me an E.T. statuette (like 6" tall or something) that I would make face the wall at night when I tried to sleep because it scared me.

Michael Jackson Thriller video, Gremlins, Jaws to name a few others.

Jaws scared me, me and my sister would jump from couch to couch not wanting to touch the floor (we were afraid of a shark coming through the floor of our house).

Heh - the flying monkies in Wizard of Oz - I was ok with the witch - but couldn't watch the monkies!

What is really sad is my daughter who is 14 just laughs at all the old scary movies. She has always watched today's horror flicks that I could never have watched when I was her age. She loved Underworld and got the DVD last month. No way I would have watched that when I was 14 without being scared.

Agree. When that one guy had his head cut off, and it sprouted legs and ran off, I lost my shit. Vary scary.

I saw the previews for Pink Floyd's The Wall when I was at another movie when I was a little kid, like 5 or 6, and it gave me horrible nightmares. I'm not really sure why...

I vividly remember one of the nightmares. I was sitting outside a barn on some farm (i didn't live on a farm or anything) and all these men that I knew (dad, uncles, grandfathers, etc) were like parading past me. They'd pass a certain point and then they'd start aging faster and faster until they were just bones and they'd collapse on the ground. It scared the fucking shit out of me for like a month.

that scene in the dark crystal where the sketsie (sp?) emperor shrivels up and turns to dust used to freak me out.

i did something similar with alien and nightmare on elm street. my parents wouldn't let me watch either movie and based on the previews i somehow managed to work them both into the same nightmare. there were 2 freddy's with claws on both hands, green reptile skin and big sharp alien teeth and they were chasing me around all over the town i lived in at the time. one of them finally "got" me and i woke up.

Bob Ross was amazing. For most of the show his paintings looked like shit and then near the end he would add some happy clouds and the entire picture would come to life.

He made painting look so easy.

one scene in twin peaks

there "bob" is sitting in a sofa , facing away from you, he then in a fluid motion stands up and climbs over the sofa towards the camera.

when me and my little brother were watching that on tv, home alone, it was i think near the end of one of the episodes or there was a commercial break soon after. I had to go to the bathroom soon after anyways, and i was lying on the floor with a big pillow from our sofa as a headrest, he sat behind me in the sofa, i made the same move as Bob did, and i've never seen anyone as scared. i didn't even find it funny, just apologized to him and went to pee, he was 9 at the time.

but that scene was sorta scary in a weird way.

edit: erm .. i so sounded like pils here didn't i ?

The Scary Stories series by Alvin Schwartz. These books were obviously meant to be scary, but they got to me like no movie or tv show ever did. At the time I read them I had seen dozens of horror flicks, but the detailed writing and weird/freaky illustrations coupled with my vivid imagination at the time scared the shit out of me. I still remember a lot of the stories in detail, yet I couldn't tell you the plot of a slasher flick I watched a couple months ago...

I became desensitized to hollywood blood and gore at a young age, but when I read the story about the brat who's mother finally left him and was replaced by a witch with a wooden leg and tail, I wouldn't let my mom out of my sight for like a month.

Jaws

I was 5 the summer it was released ( if IMDB was right about it being 75 heh) and was one a trip with my father and his family to a lake, we all went to see a movie and I was afraid to lower my legs into the floor of the aisle.

The rest of that vacation trip I always made sure there was someone further out in the water than I was also, figuring when they got munched I could head for shore.

Aliens (Sigourney Weaver aliens) scared the crap out of me when I was 7. Who was there to tell me that some random alien wasnt going to pop out of the chest of the kid next to me at any time? No one. So I lived in constant fear.

Hehe - when I was pregnant with my first child I woke up one night and felt something moving in my stomach. The first thing that popped into my head was that scene from Aliens. Freaked me out at first, but then I finally came fully awake and realized what it was.

Way off topic but Berenstain Bears were my favorite kids books. "The Big Honey Hunt" being the best of books.

The only nightmare from my childhood that had me standing in my bed screaming had to do with Horton the Elephant and a Twilight Zone spiral thingy. I think I was 7.

One of the few movies that scared me was Prince of Darkness.
