Book burning

Post by Acies »

Book burnings

You know, my respect for Cedar Rapids, Iowa (and by default her authorities) went up a few notches. They didn't say "Not here, you small-minded bigot", but they did find every law in the book to throw at them to prevent it.

While I can udnerstand the want and desire to dispose of things you find grossly offensive.. they do realize that buy buying them in bulk to burn / throw away is giving money to the very people they are attempting to thawrt, no?

Please don't assume that my comments in the above statement equate to that I beleive in burning books and or flags or religious symbols of any kind.

Kyu, book burning has been going on for about as long as books / pamphlets / scrolls have been written. It happens every day, just doesn't always make the news.

I worked as a contractor in rapids for about 7 months in the late 90s. I was actually told once that using my imagination was the same as devil worship. That town sucks.

Much <3 for close minded religious individuals that can't see that using their minds / imagination / creativity can enhance your ability to worship their Diety, and not just lead to the path of sin, whatever they beleive that path to be.

That was in reference to how the pharisees prayed as well as others who wanted to gain favor and seem like they were better people because they prayed so loudly. The point is that even if you pray silently or in a closet you are still heard.

Umm that was a Slam on the Pharasies and Rabies that prayed in public just to get attention. Remember when King Hezekiah made it illegal to pray to anyone but him? Isaiah prayed in plan site to set a example.

yes exactly my point. Jesus is saying that public displays of religion to gain social favor are worthless. "they have their reward". referring to status in the political heirarchy, whatever, financial gain etc.

so you are saying that Jesus is not counseling his followers not to make a spectacle of religion?

it seems to me that it is a fairly parsimonious interpretation of
pray to thy Father which is in
secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee
openly.
that is suggesting true relationship with God is a private matter. No amount of drawing public attention to oneself will make one "more faithful" in the eyes of God.

Even if he was speaking of specific examples of the Pharisees, that does not mean that it is OK for people who aren't Pharisees to behave in effectively the same manner as the offending parties.

as for Isaih, that is from the Old Testament, which is a completely different religious text. In fact in truth , the deity described within is totally different than the Christian god, but that is another subject not fit for discussion in the absence of cold beers :)

I have to agree with that.
Remember, being humble is a part of most religions.. grandstanding does not equal being humble about your actions..

Do what you need to do, but remember, the greatest acts of kindness are the ones that noone will ever know who did them.

actually my quote is extremely verifiable. just pick up the bible and look in there.

i wasn't claiming that it was "true", I was claiming that those words appeared in that order in the book :p

Voro you are half right as some others have tried to explain. However there's a difference between "making a spectacle of religion" and "leading people to the light."

They are not mutually exclusive. One is a means and one is an end. Jesus simply taught other means.

Also the quote talks about prayer, not living a faith. Also not the same thing.

Bottom line though - blind faith of anything is dangerous and it can be misled easily. That community is a victim of that. Good people led astray by an overzealous minister can do cooky things in the name of good. Take the Middle East or So. California as further example =p

One of the great things about modern times is how freely information flows and how much more prevalent free thinking is, simply because it's encouraged. Unfortunately by it's nature most of it is misconstrued through the Telephone Game Effect. The danger we run into is thinking that all establishments are bad and that we need to universally reinvent the wheel.

Enter: extreme liberals.

Society may need an enema but it doesn't need a whole new value base.

Umm Rekaar, religion has iniversally striven to RESTRICT information from reaching people. Religious leaders have interpreted the bible selectively and in diferent ways to support whatever their current agenda happens to be. That passage is pretty damn straightforward and it came from the mouth of a disciple of Jebus himself (the original nigger jew! Watch the the smoke come from fundie ears as they try to wrap their brains around that one) making it superceed any first testemant garbage, at least thats how Jesus suposedly intended it.

But of course, religion is the biggest tax exempt business in the world, so they have a vested interest in reinterpreting that passage. Consider this: Applying that only to non-Christians would be hypocracy which the passage itself denounces. Its like how the extra crispie jesus crispies like to quote obscure parts of leviticus to justify homophobia, but ignore the parts where it says to not eat pork and slap your bitch in line.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

Do you really expect anyone to take your perspective seriously with posts like that? Can you make a point without insulting everyone that hears it?

and "leading..." was in quotes for a reason.

Of course I expect you to take it seriously. I am citing examples from the very book in dispute and pointing out obvious examples of where the fanatical faithful are obeying it only selectively. I am also fighting years of brain washing in many people's cases. Extreme statements are the only way to get through to people who decide the best way to get their point across is to burn a bunch of stuff they don't like, rather than examine it and provide researched arguments about why they disapprove of it.

I could point out hypocracies of people who use religion as a tool to advance their personal views, often distorting or flat out disregarding vast portions of the book they are hiding behind. Just think about how many hard core antisemites and black haters wear their christianity like a badge of honor, when Jesus was both black and jewish?

Nowhere in my post did I insult you or your intelligence. I merely challenged your assertion and previded examples to back my position.

I wasn't aware the readers of this board participated in (or even endorsed) the event we were discussing. If that kind of language is "what it takes" then have at it, but you won't sway people like me to your point of view with it.

Looking for the citations too.
