I do not like Star Wars and Star Trek

Post by Dups. »

I was just curious if anyone else here did not like both Star Wars and Star Trek? My friends are always baffled when they find out I love stuff like Everquest, roleplaying games, fantasy books with magicians and wizardry etc and yet I do not care for SW or ST.

I have never watched an entire episode of Star Trek and I have only seen Star Wars Return of the Jedi and ummm that other one with the pod races because I was forced by my friends. There are a few parts of Star Wars I find neat like Lightsaber fights and pod races and "The Force" but other then that it does not interest me.

My friends at work tried to figure it out. I think I do not enjoy futuristic shows/movies because I find Star Trek hollow. It's like we are going to planet Ramading Dong XVII last time it was Rimidang Ding IIVX. If in trouble use your bleeble weep phaser wazer tazer and set it to Klingon zapping mode. In magic fantasy books I find it's neat how most of the time it's a skill within the person that he develops. Conjuring fireballs and such. Being able to do that is not just by pushing a button. That's why I find "The Force" to be pretty cool in SW.

So anyhow, I just felt like I am a rare breed that does not like Star Wars and Star Trek and still enjoys fantasy stuff about wizards and magic etc.

I'd say you're forming this opinion based on little evidence

Oh dear.
Try watching the original star wars and Empire Strikes Back before claiming not to like these films.

I tried Tanc, he just doesn't want to watch them. He won't even give them a chance. As for the Star Trek thing, I think he's afraid he'll become a geek....which he already is.

Try watching Enterprise. My wife finds it much more approachable than the other series; if it weren't for the fact that it was moved to the same time slot as West Wing we would probably even watch it now and then. ;)

Sci-Fi and Fantasy fans don't always mix. Me, I happen to like both, but one of my best friends likes Sci-Fi, but hates fantasy. It's a misconception to think if you like one you should like the other. I think it stems from the fact that Sci-Fi has the possibility to be real, where as Fantasy does not. Unless you are a Sci-Fi fan, then you really should not be judging a film because you are baseing your opinion on the fact that you don't like Sci-Fi at all. This goes for pretty much anything.

i'm not gonna try to tell you that Star Trek is all that. frankly, it is kind of dumb half the time. Let's keep it real. so if you aren't into space ships and chicks with prosthetic horns with green skin paint, then there isn't much beyond that.

as for star wars, The Empire Strikes Back is a really cool movie in my opinion, and even though there is some terrible dialogue that the characters deliver very poorly in the first 15 minutes, it pretty much is awesome.

Return of the Jedi would have been much cooler with 30 minutes of muppets removed.

i can't watch "Enterprise' because of Scott Bakula. My roomate in college (an Indian dude...brown Indian, not red Indian), used to watch Quantum Leap all day on USA. My other roomate and I would get stoned as hell and nap while he would come watch it in the bedroom where our TV was.

so anyway, anytime i see Scott Bakula, i think of a Hindu accented voice saying "hey man, its Quantum Leap"

The first three Star Wars.. well, the first two, were good. The third sucked with the little Ewok things running around. The latest two suck ass completely.

I've never been a huge fan of Star Trek movies, they're just boring to me. Although the NG ones have been better.. mostly carried by the guy playing Jean Luc Picard (damn can't remember his name). Other than him, the movies kinda blow as a whole. The TV show was better, although I could never get into DS9 for some reason, though people often claim it's the best of them all. TNG was my fav, Voyager was good, Enterprise I never seem to be able to catch. Roddenberry > Lucas

The original 3 Star Wars movies kicked serious ass when they were first made. All of the effects were better than anything that had been done before. These movies were the LoTRs of the 70s. They were epic. That's why they are looked at as some of the best films ever made. It's NOT for the acting or the writing, it's for the sheer magnitude of it all.

I've seen each movie of the original trilogy atleast 5 times or more. Now though, I don't particularly enjoy watching them, because the best part about them was the graphics. Now, paired against newer movies, the graphics are sub-par, the writing is sub-par, and the acting is sub-par.

They are classics, and like a lot of older classics, which won multiple oscars back in the 40s-60s, they wouldn't even be nominated if they were paired against the great movies of today. They are still classics though and should be seen and appreciated for the impact they had on cinema that came later.

As for Star Trek, I never watched it much. I cannot stand spin-off shows though. There was Star Trek, Star Trek:Next Gen, Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Star Trek: Voyager, now it's Star Trek: Enterprise(go Bakula, go!). I just get lost in all the spinoffs and end up not caring about any of them. The only one I ever watched much was Next Generation, but I wasn't a big fan or anything. It was what I watched if nothing else was on.

I have two favorites for their movies, one with old cast, one with Next Gen cast. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is by far the best of the original movies. The best movie with the Next Gen cast has to be First Contact, the one where they face the Borg. The only other one I remember is Star Trek IV: Adventure Home, where they travel through time to 1960's earth and it's fun to see how Spok interacts with humans. I don't remember what conflict there was, something with whales communicating with aliens?

The original Star Trek kicked ass. Remember that it originally aired back in the late 60's in a much more conservative society. It's true message was showing all races working together as well as women having significant roles as well. (I know there were plenty of hottie brain dead space chicks too!)

Space, the final frontier.
These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
It's continuing mission:
to explore strange new worlds,
to seek out new life and civilizations,
to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Of course the budget was cut so most of the later episodes involved beaming things aboard the Enterprise and battling there to save money on set costs.

The Original Star Wars movie released in 1977 was amazing. Nowadays you're spoiled with great special effects but in 1977, the special effects and originality (even though it was based on many previous ideas) was aweinspiring. I still remember how fucking cool the previews looked in the theater and waiting in line for hours to see it. I doubt there's more than a handful that saw it first release in the theaters here.

In closing, the younger generations may not appreciate the originality of Star Trek and Star Wars as much as some of the older people on this board. The new Star wars 1 and 2 are total crap. 4 and 5 were great while 6 got caught up in marketing ploys.

There is one thing you need to know about Dups though. His parents didn't buy a microwave untill about 1998. He's been deprived of such technology so I see why he wouldn't like a show about the future.

That's the Next Generation version. Or something...

Heh I know many people who've never owned a Microwave. They actually make a lot of food unhealty, or less healthy than it would be if you cooked them normally. Microwaves can effect foods on a molecular level, deforming good things such as amino acids and creating toxins within the food. Cooking some foods like vegetables in the microwave takes out a lot of the good vitamins and minerals they had, so you might as well be eating cardboard. Basically, you aren't simply cooking the foods you put in your microwave, you are destroying them.

Another problem is using plastic in the microwave, which tv dinners always have. When you use plastic containers or plastic wrap on your foods, the chemicals from the plastics actually leech into the foods you are cooking and making them toxic. Seriously, NEVER use plastic with food in a microwave, it's not healthy. Glass containers are the safest, because porceline can have paints which can also leech harmful chemicals into your food.

There's some great things about microwaves, but most people are completely unaware of the problems they can cause. There are good reasons for people to not own microwaves. If you are using them daily to cook food, you may want to stop doing that and spend time cooking food that doesn't destroy the food on a molecular level. Mutant food just isn't as good for you as normal food. :)

More accurate info
Although microwaves are safe to use it is important to point out that cooking in them can affect the nutritional value of some foods, for example, fruit and vegetables. But nutrients are lost when heating foods in any way - boiling, grilling, frying or even steaming. The Food Standards Agency (an independent food safety watchdog set up by the Government) say that the amount of nutrients lost when cooking with a microwave is the same as with other cooking methods. The best way to cook fruit and vegetables is to use as little water as possible (steaming) and not to over cook them. This will preserve as many nutrients as possible.

I saw Star Wars (the original) when it came out in the theater in 1977 (I was 12). There was nothing even close to it at the time. People just sat there in awe at the end.

Star Wars brought sci fi space opera to the masses, but there were breakout sci fi movies that preceeded it. The original Planet of the Apes series comes to mind, along with Logan's Run. Battlestar Galactica had far better story telling, in my opinion, and that came out roughly the same time. Star Wars hit it big, imo, due to borrowing heavily from a very good story (the Japanese movie it was based on is considered a classic of cinema) and including more action than most sci-fi had up to that time. It wasn't really until T1 and T2 that action was used to such a large degree again. Currentl, of course, action and over the top CGI blow outs are standard in Sci Fi movies and sci fi movies are considered relavent and cool if they manage to plug intellectualism back in somehow, like the first two Matrix movies did.

As for Star Trek, movie wise, ignore the first and fifth movies and every next gen movie except the borg one (and perhaps not the last 40 minutes of Nemesis) and you are getting top end sci fi story telling. Ignore the first two seasons of Next Gen, the first three of DS9, all but the last three of Voyager, and pretty much all of enterprise if you want the good stuff. Enterprise lost any chance to be good once they started doing time travel episodes every other week, especially with captain Sam Beckett. Its a bad sign in any sci fi story when your two alien characters are vastly more interesting than any of your human regulars (DS9 kind of fell into this trap with Garrek) and I can honestly say that I rooted for many of the Enterprise characters to die.

If you want good sci fi story telling without it being Star Trek or Star Wars, some good alternatives:

Straight Space Opera- Farscape, Babylon 5, Earth Final Conflict (Last Season Sucks)
Action Oriented- Firefly, Space Above And Beyond
Realistic/Modern- Stargate SG1, Alien Nation
Strange/Humor- Lexx, Red Dwarf
Old Classics- Dr Who (Tom Baker years), Blakes 7, Logan's Run
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Ive seen one or two star trek movies and maybe 10 mins of an episode here and there, and its horribly boring, of course its also filled with very shitty special effects and a storyline i guess only trekies can understand?

The old star wars's were decent movies, i liked the original 2nd one a lot (or the 5th) and of course the KOTOR game 8)
I dont care for the new movies

Although as a kid i did have a lot of star wars action figures

Incidentally, I believe that Star Trek: The Next Generation consistently won awards for the best special effects on television during its seven year run. I believe that they were trailblazers for TV special effects.

I don't have any particular love for any of the Star Wars or Star Trek films, and didn't think that the TV shows were amazing. Having said that, I have seen all the films and did watch some of the Star Trek shows at times.
