Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."

Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement.

"Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?"

I can almost imagine what The Reverend Jesse Jackson was thinking to himself during this speech...

I hope Cosby sticks by his guns and keeps talking sense like this. He can be ten times the role model that Jackson could ever be.

I agree entirely with Bill Cosby, the only thing stopping people from suceeding in American regardless of their skin color is themselves. Bad luck hits, but there is not an organized movement of any ability to prevent the upwards mobility of any race in the US.

Unless they are female. Women are still getting glass ceiling issues.

Exactly. He's telling blacks that you have to take charge of your own life. I am in 100% agreement. Jesse makes lewtz off of the illusion that whitey is keeping us down, send him money and he'll take care of it! I can't stand that bastard. I wish he were just as adept at uplifting our youth as he is at finger pointing. There are still personal prejudices in this country that can keep people from succeeding momentarily, but it's not systematic like it was a couple of generations ago.

As I'm sure I have probably stated before on this board, I use to work as a SW / Conselor working on the Gang problems in Little Rock in the early 90s.

What I found in most cases were kids that just wanted someone to give a shit about them, discipline them and encourage them to do the right things. I didn't have any kids (out of my 30) that were stupid or couldn't succeed... Given from talking to some of then initially you might have wondered that but truth was they just didn't care to speak correctly, or succeed in school because they had no encouragement at home, nor in their peer group.

People are different no matter their skin color so every job isn't for every person but every I believe ever person can eventually, maybe not when you first start, get to a job they enjoy and are proud of at the same time.

That being said I will say that while I think Bill is correct in how to fix things I do think that, by design or not, we have a culture of dependency in some innercity areas. There is no easy way to fix that and many politicians just ignore the problem. What I mean by this is that I had some mothers who didn't care about their kids and let them run wild... ending up in Gangs. Then I had other moms who were working 3 jobs because they were too proud to take a hand out and wanted to do the right thing but weren't able to be there enough to surpervise so their kids ended up with the same crowd.

My plan? You don't try, you don't get shit. You try? In other words, hold a job, try to go back to school, anything to better yourself, that is when the Government needs to throw some money your way. We need to encourge responsibility not hand outs. Most people really don't want them anyway... they just want a way to succeed... Of course I do believe there are still some very powerful white people this thought or program would scare the crap out of... but hopefully they will die out in the next generation or so and we can all truly move forward together

I commend Bill for his stance, getting people off their ass isn't popular stance but I feel (remember I'm speaking as a white person so take that into account) the black community truly needs a leader who will promote hard work and responsibility rather than apathy.

I read the entire article and Jackson was actually there and backing up Bill's comments. I am very surprised that he and I see share the same opinion on this. I especially liked Bills comments about the children in the back seat of the car listening to rap music. I make it a point to change the station when my kids are around. One thing that annoys me though is when I am around my nephews, oldest one is 9. They run around singing all these raps songs they hear on the radio, line by line and verse by verse, but cannot memorize their 50 states in school. That kills me, but I blame my sister-in-law.

The best part about Cosby is that not only is he an excellent public speaker, he's extremely intelligent. Actually, that's not the best part. The best part is that he doesn't appear to be motivated by politics or by false-religious pretenses.

The article has it right, he is a Civil Rights Entrepreneur, and I can't stand him.

yeah I remember Jackson crying racism about that coach, but the guy that was turned down for the job was still technically the most qualified.

I'm not a fan of jesse jackson, but I don't perceive him as someone who runs around blaming the white man for everything.

as far as cosby goes, he has his right to his opinion, and I partly agree with him. I don't really agree that black people born into an urban ghetto to shitty parents surrounded by crime and drugs and terrible schools, with almost no opportunies deserve what they get if they don't make something of themselves. saying that is no more ludicrous than blaming the white devil on everything wrong with black society. is the way that a lot of urban blacks learn and act part of the problem or is it just a symptom of the real problem?

I totally forgot about his son. That makes sense now that you mention it. I agree with you, kids starting in those circumstances have it lots harder than someone who starts life in a cushy middle-upper class family. This is where I agree with Cosby that it's the parents that need to give a damn about their childrens future, and proactively help them with it, even if they themselves are not very well educated. Staying on top of your kids, making sure they are studying, doing homework, and not hangin on the corner smokin blunts is a pretty easy task to accomplish, but only if you care.

-edit- two of my wifes cousins are dirt poor, 14 and 15 living in the projects. They stay out of trouble, play sports, and hang out with me most of the time on the computer. Their mom refuses to let them fall into the cycle of stupidity that's so easy to get caught up in when you are poor and in the ghetto. She's single, they have different dads, both in jail. But these boys, while they most likely won't be doctors or lawyers, are going to make it out of there, just because they are around people that care and encourage them. I let them know as often as possible how proud of them I am. Odds were definitely against them, and they are not out of the woods yet. Stay straight, do my schoolwork, and hang out with James on his computer, or sling rock, wear the bling and the jerseys and new shoes and laugh at the broke sucka that's wearing his borthers hand me downs. It's easy to start out in life on the wrong track facing these scenarios. Hopefully these two boys have a happy ending.

Better to use him as a yardstick then the local gangleader, drug dealer, pimp, or former inmate turned rapper don't you think? It might be harder to use him verses the others but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
There are a lot of people that pulled themselves out of the ghetto the hard way and made a better life for themselves and their family, too bad the media doesn't focus more on them for the youth growing up to have for "good" examples.

No. It's just that it is always the same crowd of white people who are always espousing they know whats best.

When I was at Fleet Bank, they had this big diversity committee. We had over 600 people in our building and a 5 women committe for diversity. Guess what color they were? You guessed it......WHITE. On cinco de mayo guess what the all white woman diversity panel came up with for lunch? That's right.......tortilla chips, dip, tacos, and burritos. LOL
