A month off work... what to do?

A month off work... what to do?

Post by Ransure »

Ok, so Ive been laid off from my job, gotten a decent severence package, and lined up what my next job will be... but I wont start until late next month. I could work part time in the meantime... however my unemployment benifits arent too shaby ether....

Im about a week into my unemployment, and so far Ive been spending a lot(screw you word filter!) of time in the gym, biking and going out drinking... but I was looking for some relatively inexpensive travel options... Like anywhere I could work for cash while traveling or sumsuch for a short period of time (a week or two)... Im considering doing some research into like youth hostles in Europe... Im pretty sure I could get myself a deal on a plane ticket... so the only limiting factor is how much can I see in that time... and how much fun can I have doing it?

Some ideas would be appreciated! :)

For youth hostels in Europe, figure something like 10-20 euros ($12-$24) per night.

You might want to search for 'Working Holidays' or something - there's a specific term for it which eludes me right now. Basically it's a room and board in exchange for manual labor-thing.

You know, I thought about that Sweet... then I realized that I had 4 job offers lined up... 2 of them from previous companies I worked for... and a nice severence package + unemployment benifits that cover my monthly expenses.... so Im on what you could either consider temporary retirement, or a month long vacation :)

If your going to try and flame me about something like work... try moving out of your parents house, gettting a job, and supporting yourself... then look up the definition of "severence pay".... Maybe then you can attempt to talk some shit.

Sweet is sad because the only job he can get is working on his knees at the local truck stop where he wears his cum splattered tube top and fondles his infected nipple rings while giving oral pleasure to bubba for a cherry yoohoo and a couple bottle caps. Ignore him.
Now Ransure if you have a yard, I would recommend throwing yourself fully into yardwork for a good 2 weeks. You can do a lot of work and make your lawn look great if you have the time to devote to it.
Otherwise, enjoy the month off and have fun.

I do have a yard... but I rent.. and the lawnmower is broken...

Heh, when I first moved into this house... I thought.. WOW! I can do so much to this house to make it awesome! Then I realized that the owner would be the one reaping the benifits of my home improvements... so, I trim the trees, cut the grass... but otherwise... she can hire someone if she wants a show home. :)

Visit your local library, work on the election campaign of a candidate you support, volunteer to help someone or some organization, write your autobiography, work out..

With 40 hours a week plus travel times and such free I would be able to thinkl of a million things.

If I want to make extra money I would get a BlockBuster job for a few weeks add cash to the pocket, and catch up on movies, of course that would blow unemployment.

Been tossing this idea around... but in the end it would be more expensive than going to the caribbean for a few days... gas prices... car maintenence + hotels... sure I could sleep in the car and shower in gyms or something... but again... it would ruin the experiance Im looking for... The US kinda sucks for traveling on a budget in my experiance...

Option 1:
Go to LA, try to fuck Paris Hilton and put the video up on the internet!!

Option 2:
Kidnap the Anorexic Olsen, tie her un to a chair, buy a dozen boxes of Krispy Kreme and force feed them all to her. Go to Entertainment Tonight with a story of how you cured her. Then write a book about it and beat Clinton off the NYTime BestSeller list

You know what Ran? My suggestion is you do absolutely nothing. If you really can't be idle that long, hop in your car and visit some people you haven't had the time to see in a few years. Oppurtunities like this are few and far between.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

If you decide to go to europe.....there are some train ticket package you can buy..called "eurorail" i think. It is like a three country package...you can use every kind of trains free. (have to pay for the TGV in france for reservations).
And the eurorail goes for 1 month in three country.

If you want to see more than 3, you can take upgrade of eruorail for 2 "groups" of country, and it is a bit more expensive.
