Today's News

Post by Fesuni Chopsui »

I realize a lot of people were sick of hearing about Reagan...

But I just wanted to say, all of the tributes, the 21 gun salutes, the images of Nancy Reagan mourning her dead husband in such elegance, the images of old rivals (Thatcher and Gorb) coming together to celebrate one man...really touched a nerve with me...especially that last image of Nancy over her husbands casket, weeping...followed by her children coming to hug her

Regardless if you are a Democrat, a Republican, a liberal, a conservative, pro-Reagan, anti-Reagan, pro-anything, anti-anything...I think today's events summarize what an absolutely great country America is...that we can come together, unify as a nation, to mourn a man collectively, that not all of us may have agreed with...and more poignantly what, at times, a great world we live in, that one man could bring forth such a multitude of tributes and bring together so many people

Well those are my thoughts on today's news coverage of the funeral...yours?

I thought it was phony and staged. Reagan himself was probably the worst actor at the entire funeral. How anyone can call Reagan anything other than a racist, evil, pork-barrel windbag without bursting out laughing is probably deserving of an oscar. Fitting that the Reagan family pastor is an old school south african though.

I was moved. Every death is mourned and brings people together. To see the emotions of the people that broke down and seeing how they remembered Reagan really touched me to be honest. Love the man or hate him he brought common people together and if you do not believe me look at the crowds that lined the streets of D.C. and the presidential library in California. Those crowds were bigger than the ones I have seen during Mardi Gras.

It is only those without grace, common decency, tact, respect, honor, morals and compasion; that would make a mockery and condem a man in a vile manner at the time of mourning his death. I hope one day that you all realise the hatred shown by the far left and far right is only tearing this country apart. Don't wait on a super politicain to mend the tear; it all starts with the individual.

I never paid it any attention. Nacy has probably had to do the "hug the casket" thing about 5-6 times by now. I'm sure she'll be happy when all the hoopla is over. I know I will.

i think if they had it to do over again they'd take that publicity hound priest out of the ceremony.

that guy was begging to be hooked off of the stage....MAKE THE PAIN STOP!

i thought earlier in the day the eulogies of Thatcher and Bush, Sr. were pretty great speeches.

like him or not, he was a huge figure, and his life and death effected many people. i thought they did what was appropriate more or less considering the circumstances. Most o fthe public was captivated, so they obviously didn't drag it out too long. i'd say those that thought so were in the minority - even if they were right.

But the pastor himself, he was not up to the standards that were set by the rest of the proceedings.

I thought what was really cool was that earlier in the day, i saw on TV a Ray CHarles performance at Reagan's 2nd presidential innauguration of "America the Beautiful". it was prety terrific, and hilarious cause at the end, a bunch of celebrities come up to help him sing the chorus. Notables:

Frank Sinatra, Liz Taylor, WEBSTER! and Mr. T!!!!

Good morning, the worm, your honour,
The crown will plainly show,
The prisoner who now stands before you,
Was caught red-handed showing feelings.
Showing feelings of an almost human nature.
This will not do.

Yeah, because all of our presidents deserve funerals that mirror Joseph Stalins. The guy was an evil man and put the fucking fundies in control of the country, which is why all you neocons are weeping tears like he had been nailed to a stick of wood by the fucking romans.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I'm not a huge fan of big public funerals like this which is why I did not watch. I know that I would never want it for myself or to be part of one if it was my family, I know he was a President at an important time historically but.. I feel bad for his family for having everything publicized like that.

I prefere to mourn privately, and to honor my dead privately.

Jice and Kyoukan once again there is no surprise here. Everything Reagan did was evil, self serving, and of racist origin. Typical response of the deluded.

I laugh periodically when I think of Kyoukan waking up in the morning and looking in the mirror and hating the color of her skin.

You think that Atokal thinking Kyoukan hating her skin is a racist joke?

Kyoukan hates white people, and it is okay, because she is white? Now that is a joke.

Didn't get to watch it, had other more important things that day. I'm sure it was very moving. Reagan did some really good things and as some want to point out some not so good. Eventually History will remember both but for now I'm all about honoring a fallen president... abet I think we did go a little overboard. But hey, it took some heat off the conflit in Iraq for a week or so :)

Fesuni good post....I know you dislike Reagan, but you were able to put it aside for what was happening and have respect for your fellow Americans and fallen President and see and pay attention to the historical event without pure hatred in all ways as some others....and have some respect for the event...Im glad you are a fellow American with common decency even though we may disagree abit :)
